  • Ammonia (NH3) emitted from the use of fertilizers during agricultural practice generates particulate matter and odors. The application of carbonized rice husk, an eco-friendly material, is one of the measures used to reduce NH3. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the application rate and pH of carbonized rice husk on NH3 emissions and soil quality. An experiment to assess NH3 emissions was performed in a glasshouse using a static chamber method. The pH of the carbonized rice husk was divided into acidic, neutral, and basic groups, and the carbonized rice husk application rates were 1, 3, and 5% of the soil weight. NH3 emissions showed a sharp increase within three days after the inorganic fertilizer was applied. Subsequently, NH3 emissions decreased rapidly after basal fertilization compared to primary and secondary top-dressing. When carbonized rice husks were applied to soil, NH3 emissions decreased in all treatments, and neutral carbonized rice husk was the most effective in comparison with acidic and basic carbonized rice husk. The application rate of carbonized rice husk and NH3 emissions showed a negative correlation, and the lowest emissions were found in units with a 5% application rate. Also, there was no statistically significant difference between NH3 emissions according to the application rate of carbonized rice husk, and when carbonized rice husks were applied at a 5% rate, soil OM increased excessively. Therefore, it is recommended to apply only 1% neutral carbonized rice husk to most effectively reduce NH3 emissions in the soil.

  • Cover cropping and liquid manure application are considered as effective ways to replace the use of chemical fertilizer in orchard. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of cover crop species and liquid manure application rate on green manure production, leaf mineral content, fruit quality and soil chemical properties in pear orchard. The treatments include rye and hairy vetch as cover crops, two liquid manure application levels based on N and $K_2O$ requirement on each cover crop species, and chemical fertilizer as control. Green manure production was higher in hairy vetch than in rye. K content of pear leaves and soil exchangeable K content increased in N based liquid manure application treatments. The yield was higher in rye + liquid manure and fertilizer treatments, and fruit quality was not different between the treatments. Taking all of these into account, rye + $K_2O$ requirement-based liquid manure application is recommended in pear orchard for not only sufficient nutrient supply but also prevention of any problem related with soil $K_2O$ accumulation in pear orchard in long-term perspective.

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of biogas slurry application on biomass production and the silage quality of corn. Methods: A field experiment was conducted in which corn was grown using different biogas slurry application rates. The effect of 25% to 500% biogas slurry nitrogen replacement (T1 to T14) on the yield and quality indices of corn were studied by field plot experiments. Results: The results revealed that biogas slurry application improved the stem diameter and relative feed value of corn silage in treatments T13 and T11. Moreover, the fermentation quality of corn silage was improved due to an increase in lactic acid content; in comparison with the chemical synthetic fertilizer (CF) group. The crude protein contents of corn silage had no obvious change with increasing biogas slurry application. However, the forage quality index of acid detergent fiber was decreased (p<0.05) in the T11 group compared with the CF group. In addition, higher (p<0.05) 30 h in vitro dry matter digestibility and 30 h in vitro neutral detergent fiber digestibility were observed in the T11 and T13 groups than in the CF group. Conclusion: Based on these results, it was concluded that the optimum biogas slurry application rate for corn was approximately 350% to 450% biogas slurry nitrogen replacement under the present experimental conditions.

  • Rice bran application just after transplanting has been increasingly practiced as an herbicide-substitute for organic rice production in Korea. However, this practice is frequently reported to be unsatisfactory in weed suppression. An experiment with five treatments that combines flooding depth, rice bran application dose, and herbicide treatment was done in the paddy field to evaluate whether rice bran application under deep flooding can lead to a successful weed control in compensation for the single practice of rice bran application. Rice bran was broadcasted on the flood water surface just after deep flooding of 8 to 10cm that was started at seven days after transplanting. In the shallow flooding plot without herbicide six weed species were recorded: Monochoria vaginalis, Echinochloa crus-galli, Ludvigia prostrate, Cyperus amuricus, Aneima keisak, and Bidens tripartite. Among the first four dominant weed species, deep flooding significantly suppressed the occurrence of Echinochloa crus-galli and Cyperus amuricus while did not suppress the occurrence of Monochoria vaginalis and Ludwigia prostrate. On the contrary, rice bran application under deep flooding suppressed significantly Monochoria vaginalis and Ludwigia prostrate while didn't exert an additional suppression of Echinochloa crus-galli and Cyperus amuricus compared to deep flooding alone. Rice bran application and deep flooding suppressed complimentarily all the six weed species to a satisfactory extent except for Monochoria vaginalis of which suppression efficacy was 31.9%. Deep flooding reduced the panicle number substantially by inhibiting the tiller production, increased the spikelet number per panicle slightly, and leaded to a lower rice grain yield compared to shallow flooding with herbicide. Rice bran application under deep flooding mitigated the panicle reduction due to deep flooding, increased the spikelets per panicle significantly, and thus produced even higher grain yield in the rice bran application of 2000kg $ha^{-1}$ as compared to the shallow flooding treatment with herbicide. In conclusion, this practice applying rice bran under deep flooding would be promising to be incorporated as an integral practice for an organic rice farming system.

  • This paper studies six different AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) approaches and suggests that the features of the approaches are classified by application circumstances in order to contribute to the applicability and quality usage of the AHP. Our study investigates the hierarchical principles and characteristics of the AHP, and historical debates on the AHP evaluation in which the six approaches have been involved. One of six approaches is an ANP (Analytic Network Process) application that is directly connected to AHP usage. The application differences among the six approaches are validated with a plain example. Then, the four circumstances of AHP applications are classified by two dimensions: the first dimension is whether or not the importance (weights) of criteria is independent of restrictively setting alternatives, and the second dimension is whether or not preference (priorities) of alternatives is independent of adding alternative(s) to or removing alternative(s) from the considering set of alternatives. Then featuring way of weighting criteria is classified. We suggest the distinguishing manners and describe the implications of the AHP application. Finally, we discuss rank reversal and multiplicative AHP.
