Development of the Nursing Competency Scale for Outpatient Nurses in a Tertiary Hospital (상급종합병원 외래간호사의 간호역량 평가도구 개발)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify nursing competencies of outpatient nurses, to develop a tool to assess the same, and to verify the validity and reliability of the tool. Method: Preliminary items of the scale were developed based on a literature review and nurses' interviews. The tool's content validity was verified by an expert panel and by conducting a pilot study. Subsequently, to verify the validity and reliability of the scale, data were collected from 233 outpatient nurses from 7 certified tertiary hospitals. Data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis, independent t-test, and internal consistency and correlation analysis. Result: The factor analysis revealed the following 9 factors for the 48 items of the scale: organizational management, customer orientation, personality and ethics, problem solving, nursing practice, interpersonal relationships, communication, crisis management, and professionalism. The Cronbach's α coefficient of the final instrument was .97. Conclusion: The tool developed in this study exhibited adequate validity and reliability. It was effective in reflecting the changing roles of outpatient nurses. Therefore, in future, this tool is expected to help improve outpatient nurses' competencies and nursing quality.

The Impact of Self-Efficacy on Nurses' Well-Being: Does Digital Competence Matter?

  • Purpose: Drawing on person-environment fit theory and social cognitive theory, this study aimed to examine how self-efficacy affects nurses' workplace well-being via person-job fit and the moderating role of digital competence. Methods: A two-wave survey was conducted to collect data. Data were collected from six hundred and ninety-five nurses at three Chinese hospitals between May 2022 and September 2022. We employed hierarchical regression analysis and bootstrapping to analyze the data. Results: Self-efficacy positively influenced person-job fit (β = .55, p < .001), which positively affected nurses' workplace well-being (β= .32, p < .001). Person-job fit mediated the effect of self-efficacy on nurses' workplace well-being. Additionally, digital competence strengthened the positive impact of self-efficacy on person-job fit (β = .12, p < .001). Conclusion: Recruiting nurses with both self-efficacy and digital competence benefits hospitals. It is critical for nurses to improve their digital competence for achieving person-job fit and attaining workplace well-being in the post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) era.

A Study on the actual condition and perception of the social service activity of nurses for social service system construction (간호사의 사회봉사활동 체계 구축을 위한 실태 및 인식 조사)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual condition and recognition about social service activity(SSA) of nurses. Methods : This is a descriptive study. The data were collected by a structured questionare from July 15 to 31, 2002. The questionares were sent to 711 nurses of 38 hospitals, and 664 cases were returned. The answer rate is 93.4%. The data were analyzed by SPSS 11.0. Results : 1. 71.0% nurses had a SSA experience during university, but only 14.2% nurses are participated in SSA now. 2. In the case of having an experience, 56.0% nurses participated in SSA under 1 year, 69.5% nurses didn't support the service costs. 3. In the case of not having experience, the main reason why they didn't participate in is to lack of opportunity. 4. 91.1% nurses recognize the necessity of SSA and 99.5% nurses agree with the necessity of operation system. 82.9% nurses approve the cooperation system among the regions. 87.2% nurses have an intension to participate in SSA when the cooperation system is set up. Conclusion : It need to set up the social service operating system among the regions, and encourage nurse to participate in the SSA.

The Influence of Reality Shock and Educational Specialist Nurse's Social Support on Organizational Socialization of New Nurses (신규간호사의 현실충격과 교육전담간호사의 사회적 지지가 신규간호사의 조직사회화에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify related factors in the organizational socialization of new nurses, focusing on the reality shock of new nurses and social support by education specialist nurses. Methods: Participants were 122 new nurses with clinical experience of 1 year or less as nurses working in a general hospital that is carrying out a pilot project for a new nurse training system. Data were collected using self-report questionnaires which included identification of participants' characteristics, social support of education specialist nurse, reality shock and organizational socialization. Results: The organizational socialization score was 3.07±0.45 points. The results of the stepwise multiple regression showed that factors affecting organizational socialization of new nurses were social support by gender, education specialist nurse and reality shock. These three variables accounted for 72.0% of organizational socialization. Conclusion: These findings suggest that the social support of education specialist nurses be enhanced to increase the organizational socialization of new nurses. There is also a need for a program to decreased the reality shock of new nurses.

The Influence of Calling on School Organizational Commitment of School Health Nurses (보건교사의 소명의식이 학교조직몰입에 미치는 영향)

  • With the emergence of new infectious diseases and changes in the educational environment, the health problems of school-age students are increasing. Accordingly, the role of school health teachers is expanding and becoming more important. The study was to examine the effect of calling on school organizational commitment of school health nurses. Samples were a total of 143 school health nurses working in elementary, middle, and high schools, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea who understood the purpose of this study and voluntarily participated in the study. Measures were Calling and Vocation Questionnaire-Korea (CVQ-K) and organization commitmen questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 23.0 program. The analyses showed that the prediction model for school organizational commitment of school health nurses was significant (F=16.142, p<.001). The value of the adjusted R2 was 0.307, which corresponds to the explanatory power of 30.7%. The factor that was found to have the most influence on school organizational commitment of school health nurses was purpose/meaning (β=.28, p=.011), followed by number of classes (β=-.20, p=.006). In order to improve the school organizational commitment of school health nurses, the purpose/meaning and the number of classes should be considered.

Perceived Occupational Stress and Depression of School Nurses (일지역 보건교사의 지각된 직무스트레스와 우울)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify occupational stress and to determine level of depression of school nurses and to identify factors that influence depression. Methods: A cross-sectional design was employed in this study. Participants included 146 school nurses from D city. Data collection was conducted on January 17-21, 2011, using self-administered questionnaires. The SPSS/WIN 11.5 was used in performance of data analysis. Results: Significant differences in occupational stress were observed according to age, occupation and perceived mental health status, and in depression according to marital status, perceived mental health status and physical disease. Depression showed significant positive correlation with occupational stress (r=.35, p<.001). In regression analysis, occupational stress and physical health state were found to be the cause of depression in 17% of subject. Conclusion: Findings of this study allow for a comprehensive understanding of occupational stress and level of depression of school nurses in Korea. Further study using a larger random sample and various variables is needed.

High School Boys' Images of Men as Nurses (남자고등학생의 남자간호사 이미지)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the images of men as nurses held by high school boys, and to provide basic data about the desirability of nursing as a career choice for them. Method: Q-methodology which provides a method of analyzing the subjectivity of each item was used: The 35 high school boys classified 31 selected Q-statements into a normal distribution using a 9-point scale. The collected data was analyzed by the pc-QUNAL program. Results: Among the high school boys, three types of images of men as nurses were identified. Type I; A promising occupation for men through active way of thinking, Type II; Men working in a woman oriented field of work, Type III; A promising profession without any gender stereotype. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that specific strategies should be developed to promote the choice of nursing among high school boys.

Clinical Nurses' Experience of Positive Organizational Culture (임상간호사가 경험한 긍정적인 간호조직문화)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to explore clinical nurses' experience of positive organizational culture in order to provide data for effective strategies of acquisition and retention of competent nurses. Methods: In this qualitative study, interviews with four focus groups of four to six nurses, 19 in total, were held. Compositional factors in groups included clinical experience, age, work place, and position. Interviews proceeded until data were saturated. Results: Fifteen sub-themes, categorized into six themes, emerged. Positive organizational culture themes included "Helping nurses to be organization members", "Allowing nurses to communicate with one another", "Helping nurses take an initiative to lead organization", "Having competent leader take charge of organization", "Enabling nurses to achieve organizational changes", and "Leading nurses to accomplish organizational performance." Conclusion: Results indicate that positive organizational culture is related to increases in occupational satisfaction and decreases in turnover through supportive organizational culture which makes it possible to reinvest expenses required for training new members to promoting quality growth in the organization and the prestige of professional nurses. In order to improve occupational satisfaction and sustained growth in nurses, it is necessary to provide nurses with positive work environments and require members to make active efforts leading to strategic changes.
