Objectives:This study was conducted to investigate variables related to children's depression, and also the relationships between children's depression and parents' depression. Methods:258 5th and 6th grade elementary school students in Taegu, and their parents were asked to complete self-report questionnaires including the children's depression Inventory(CDI) and the Beck's depression Inventory(BDI). Correlation analysis, T-test, One-way ANOVA were used for the statistical analysis and the statistically significant level is p<0.05. Results:1) CDI mean for total children is $13.5{\pm}6.77$, BDI mean for their mother is $13.3{\pm}7.25$, and BDI mean for their father is $11.6{\pm}7.03$. 2) There are significant differences in CDI for children variables related to sex, health, school achievement, economic status. 3) Mother's health slightly affect children's depression, but there are no significant differences in CDI for parents' education, religion, father's health. 4) Children's school achievement and economic status among variables related to children affect mother's BDI scores and children's school achievement affect father's BDI scores. 5) For CDI item analysis, there are significant differences in 10 items for children's sex, in 8 items for health, and in 6 items for economic status. Especially, there are significant differences in 20 items among 27 items for children's school achievement. 6) There is significant correlation between parents' BDI scores and children's CDI scores, and especially high correlation to mother for both boys and girls. Conclusion:Children's depression are significantly affected by children's sex, health, school achievement, economic status. And especially school achievement affect grossly children's depression and their mother's depression, so we know that children and their mother have much burden about school achievement. There is high correlation between children's depression and parents'(especially mother) depression. Therefore, these result imply that in the therapy for children's depression, we must include not only children's problems but also parents' depression and parent-children relationship.
The present study examined predictors of children's problem solving using structural equation modeling(SEM). Participants were 410 dyads of 2nd- and 6th-grade children and their mother or father. Children and their parents responded to questionnaires. Instruments were the PSI(Parent Behavior Inventory, 1998), CES-D(Center for Epidemiological Scale-Depression, for children's depression, 1977) Sherer's(1982) self-efficacy scale, and the Problem Solving Inventory(Heppner & Petersen, 1982). In both grades, warmth in parenting behavior affected children's self-efficacy, which in turn contributed to their problem solving. Rejection in parenting behavior had positive effects on problem solving through increasing self-efficacy in 2nd graders only. Results implied importance of self-efficacy and developmentally appropriate parenting to improve children's problem solving.

Objectives: This study examined the current status of depression and related factors among children using community child center. Methods: A cross-sectional study selected children in grades 4-6 who used the Gwangju and Jeollanamdo community child center (n=224) using a convenience sampling method. General characteristics, family characteristics, children's emotional characteristics, children's school life environment and depression status were assessed using a self-reported questionnaire. Results: The average score of depression among children using community child center was 15.31±7.70 out of a total of 27. Fifty-eight (25.9%) children had depression above 22 points. Variables related to children's depression were shown as grade, subjective economic level awareness, after-school activities excluding local children's centers, presence of family members after school, and family structure. Conclusions: The depression prevalence of children using community child center was higher. Policy support such as children's psychological support programs would be needed to reduce children's depression, and community child centers are expected to be effective in reducing children's depression if continuous child psychological support services are developed for children's mental health.
The purpose of this study was the development of a scale to assess the daily hassles of school age children. The subjects were 398 third and sixth grade children selected from elementary schools in Seoul, Inchon, Taejon, Kwangju and Pusan. Instruments included a questionnaire composed of a 96-item Daily Hassles Coping Scale, demographic questions, a 27-item Children's Depression Inventory, the 42-item Han & Yoo Daily Hassles Scale for Children, and a 30-item Children's Behavior Check List for mothers. Mean, %, ${\chi}^2$, Cramer's V, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, factor analysis and Pearson's r were used for data analysis. 82 items from the 96-item Daily Hassles Coping Scale were selected through the item discriminant method. (Cramer's V discriminant coefficients ranged from .36 to .79). Five factors were extracted from the lst and 2nd factor analyses. Subscales were "parent-related," "friend-related I," "study-related," "friend-related II," and "teacher-related" stress. Criterion validity of the 82-item scale was confirmed through significant correlations with the Children's Depression Inventory (r=.55) and the Han & Yoo Daily Hassles Scale for Children (r=.22). Internal consistency of this scale was high, including internal reliability of subscales. These results confirm this scale as a valid and reliable measure of daily hassles of school age children.
The purpose of this study was the development of a scale to assess daily hassles coping behaviors for school aged children. The subjects were 398 children consisted of 197 3rd grade an 201 6th grade. They were selected from elementary school in Seoul, InCheon, DaeJeon, GwangJu and Pusan(202 males and 196 females) A questionnaire as the methodological instrument composed of 65-item daily hassles coping scale, demographic questions, 27-item Children's Depression Inventory and 20-item Locus of Control Scale. Statistics such as mean, %, X2, Cramer's V, Cronbach's α, factor analysis and Person's γ was used for used data analysis. The major findings of this study were as follows; 1)55 items of the 65-item scale were selected through item discriminant method. The discriminant coeffcients of the items(Cramer's V) ranged from .35 to .68. 2)5 factors were extracted from the 1st and the 2nd factor analysis. The subscales labelled 'active' 'passive' 'aggressive' 'avoidant' and 'social support seeking' coping. The criterion validity of this scale was assessed by computing the correlation measures of Children's Depression Inventory and Locus of Control Scale with this scale. Most coefficients were significant(ranging from r=-.16 to r=.40,p<.01,p<.001), although their correlations were modest. 3)Finally, the internal consistency of this scale appeared to be at an acceptable level(Cronbach's α=.90)
Objective: This study examined the influence of maternal attachment on adjustment in adolescence and investigated whether paternal attachment had any moderating effects on the relationship between maternal attachment and adjustment in adolescence. Methods: The participants of this study were 300 second graders from two middle schools in Seoul. We measured paternal and maternal attachment as perceived by the participants, adjustment in adolescence through school life adjustment, depression, and relational aggression. The study applied correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis suggested by Baron and Kenny (1986). Results: First, participants with high parental attachment showed high levels of school life adjustment, low level of depression, and low levels of relational aggression, demonstrating healthy psycho-social adjustment in adolescence. Second, paternal attachment played a facilitating role in the process of high maternal attachment's positive influence on school life adjustment. Third, paternal attachment mitigated the process of low maternal attachment's negative influence on depression. Conclusion: Our findings highlight the importance of emotional communication, support, and intimacy between parents and children in middle school. Furthermore, it emphasized the importance of the paternal role and involvement in the mother-child relationship.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting the drinking behavior in high school students. Methods: There were 620 subjects who were first and second graders of seven high schools in Daegu. This study used Sinhaengwoo (1998)'s drinking behavior scale, Rowlison and Felner (1988)'s stress scale, Kovacs (1981)'s children's depression inventory, Rosenberg (1965)'s self-esteem scale. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression using SPSS/win 18.0 program. This study was approved by the Institutional Review Boards (IRB) of the Keimyung university hospital(No. 12-112). Results: The mean score for drinking behavior in high school students was 23.1points. Factors influencing drinking behavior in high school students were identified as self-esteem(t=-3.67, p<.001), stress(t=6.79, p<.001), school types(t=4.02, p<.001), sex(t=-3.67, p<.001). These factors explained 27% of drinking behavior reported by high school students. Conclusion: The results indicate which factors are majors influencing drinking behavior in high school students. Therefore, self-esteem enhancement could be considered as an effective strategy to reduce the drinking behavior in high school students.
This study examined to find out mediating variable between ordinary stress and anxiety-depression. The subjects were 2,844 4th grade elementary school in Korea. The instruments used were questionnaires about anxiety-depression, ordinary stress, anger control ability and negative self-concept. Data were analyzed by t-test and regression. Major findings were as follows: (1) There were significant difference in parent-, appearance-, possession-related stress, anger control ability, negative self-concept and anxiety-depression according to sex. (2) Parent-, schoolwork-, peer-, appearance-related stress and anger control ability had a significant effect on the anxiety-depression. The principal finding was that anger control ability had mediating role between ordinary stress(schoolwork-, peer-, appearance-related stress) and anxiety-depression in male, one side parent-related stress and anxiety-depression in female. (3) Parent-, schoolwork-, peer-, appearance-related stress and negative self-concept had a significant effect on the anxiety-depression. The principal finding was that negative self-concept had mediating role between ordinary stress(parent-, schoolwork-, peer-, appearance-, possession-related stress) and anxiety-depression in male, one side parent-, peer-related stress and anxiety-depression in female.

Objectives : The aim of this study was to determine whether intervention using a multidisciplinary approach affects maternal mental health, parenting stress, and sense of parenting competence in children with feeding disorder and failure to thrive (FTT). Methods : Children with feeding disorder and FTT were randomized to the intervention group (N=11) or control group (N=8). We administered the Korean standardization of Parent Temperament Questionnaire for Children (K-PTQ) in both groups before intervention, and the Korean version of the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (K-PSI-SF), Korean version of the Parenting Sense of Competence (K-PSOC), Korean version of the Beck's Depression Inventory (K-BDI), Korean version of the Beck Anxiety Inventory (K-BAI), and Korean version of the Mood Disorder Questionnaire (K-MDQ) in both groups before and after the intervention. Results : In the intervention group, the K-BDI (p=.068), K-BAI (p=.068), and K-MDQ (p=.066) scores tended to show a decline, the K-PSI-SF scores for stress related to child learning showed a significant decline, and the K-PSOC scores for sense of parenting competence showed significant improvement. However, no significant changes were observed in the control group. Conclusion : Use of a multidisciplinary approach improved maternal mental health, parenting stress, and sense of competence. Comparison of these results with those of normal control will be necessary in a future study.
