  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between body esteem, stress, and health promoting behaviors among Korean adults in a community and to identify factors that influence health promoting behaviors. Methods: This study was conducted using a questionnaire which included item for body esteem, stress and health promotion behaviors. Data were collected from 257 adults living in Jeollabuk-do in Korea from November to December, 2015. The collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression using the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. Results: The mean score of body esteem was $2.73{\pm}0.43$, stress was $1.89{\pm}0.68$, and health promoting behaviors was $2.22{\pm}0.45$. There was a significant positive correlation between body esteem and health promotion behaviors (r=.47, p<.001), whereas there was a significant negative correlation between stress and health promotion behaviors (r=-.47, p<.001). In stepwise multiple regression analysis, body esteem, religion, education explained approximately 30.1% of health promoting behaviors (F=37.73, p<.001). Conclusion: The results in this study indicate that body esteem is the most important factor in health promoting behaviors among Korean adults. Thus, body esteem contents should be included in developing programs for adults to enhance their health promoting behaviors.

  • Dysregulation of excitatory neurotransmission has been implicated in the pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric disorders. Pharmacological inhibition of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors is widely used to model neurobehavioral pathologies and underlying mechanisms. There is ample evidence that overstimulation of NMDA-dependent neurotransmission may induce neurobehavioral abnormalities, such as repetitive behaviors and hypersensitization to nociception and cognitive disruption, pharmacological modeling using NMDA has been limited due to the induction of neurotoxicity and blood brain barrier breakdown, especially in young animals. In this study, we examined the effects of intraperitoneal NMDA-administration on nociceptive and repetitive behaviors in ICR mice. Intraperitoneal injection of NMDA induced repetitive grooming and tail biting/licking behaviors in a dose- and age-dependent manner. Nociceptive and repetitive behaviors were more prominent in juvenile mice than adult mice. We did not observe extensive blood brain barrier breakdown or neuronal cell death after peritoneal injection of NMDA, indicating limited neurotoxic effects despite a significant increase in NMDA concentration in the cerebrospinal fluid. These findings suggest that the observed behavioral changes were not mediated by general NMDA toxicity. In the hot plate test, we found that the latency of paw licking and jumping decreased in the NMDA-exposed mice especially in the 75 mg/kg group, suggesting increased nociceptive sensitivity in NMDA-treated animals. Repetitive behaviors and increased pain sensitivity are often comorbid in psychiatric disorders (e.g., autism spectrum disorder). Therefore, the behavioral characteristics of intraperitoneal NMDA-administered mice described herein may be valuable for studying the mechanisms underlying relevant disorders and screening candidate therapeutic molecules.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship of family related variables with adolescents'delinquent behaviors. Family related variables were consisted of (a) family's general characteristics (j.e., occupation, income, etc.) and (b) family relationship charateristics (j.e.. parents'child rearing attitude, parents' marital relationship, and communication level between parents and adolescent children) . Adolescents'delinquent behaviors were also analyzed according to adolescents'general charateristics such as sex, grade, birth order, school achievement level, and religion. The data were collected from 577 middle and high school students in Chonju by using self-administered questionnaire method. Results showed that there were significant differences in the frequency level of adolescents'delinquent behaviors across adolescents'sex, grade, birth order, school achievement level, and religion, and across mother's occupation. and subjective living level. The delinquent behaviors were also negatively correlated with most of family relationship characteristics. Results of multiple regression analyses indicated that communication of adolescent children with their father and mother's child rearing attitude were most significant variables influencing adolescents'delinquent behaviors.

  • This study investigated differences in the level of delinquent behaviors depending on family structures among adolescents. The subjects were 552 middle and high school students living in Seoul and Incheon, of whom 247 were being raised by single-parents and 305 by non-divorced parents. All respondents answered by self-report questionnaire. Data were analyzed by t-test, Scheffe test, ANOVA and two-way ANOVA. The major findings were as follows. First, the level of adolescents' delinquent behaviors differed by sex and age. High school students tended to be more engaged in violence and status delinquent behaviors than middle school students. Male students were more likely to engage in social, sex and properly delinquent behaviors than female students. Second, there were differences in the level of delinquent behaviors depending on family structures among the adolescents. Mostly, adolescents with non-divorced parents were less delinquent than those with a single parent. Third, among the adolescents from a divorced family, then whose parents had been divorced for 1-2 years had the highest score in sex and property delinquent behaviors.

  • As the complexity of the our environment is further complicated by advancements in industry and increase in vehicle traffic flow, the incidents of injury causing accidents are on the rise. Consequently, there is increasing emphasis on the importance of systematic and continual safety education for injury preventive behaviors. This study investigates safety related problems of elementary school students based on the PRECEDE model, proposed by Green et al.(1980 Green), to comprehensively identify the requirements of school safety education. The identified requirements were used to diagnose the current state of elementary school safety education through the analysis of multidimensional factors. A questionnaire survey was conducted on 594 sixth grade students from randomly selected 4 schools in Seoul to examine their injury preventive behaviors and to determine the educational diagnosis variables that affect it. The duration of the survey was 3 weeks starting from April 12, 1999 to May 8, 1999. A summary of the survey results are presented below; 1. Situations in which accidents have occurred were, in their order of frequency, ‘during play or sports activities within the school grounds’ was most frequent at 59.6%, ‘during play on local streets’ at 49.5%, and ‘traffic accidents’ at 41.6%. 2. Categorization of the injury preventive behavior showed that ‘not playing at high traffic flow locations such as streets and construction sites’ had the higher level of observance, while ‘wearing of helmets and joint protection devices during playing’ was least observed. 3. Considering injury preventive behaviors in relation to educational diagnosis variables indicated, for predisposing factors, lower ‘perception to injury accidents’ (p〈0.001) combined with higher ‘concerns for injury accidents’(p〈0.001), ‘practice of preventive behavior’(p〈0.001), and ‘the level of safety knowledge’(p〈0.001) resulted in significantly higher observance of injury preventive behaviors. For enabling factors, higher ‘perceived level of the school safety education’ (p〈0.001) and ‘availability of safety education resources’(p〈0.01) indicated significantly higher observance of injury preventive behaviors. For the reinforcing factor, frequent exposure to ‘safety education brochure’ (p〈0.01) and ‘audio-visual material for safety education’(p〈0.01) combined with more ‘regional safety education’ (p〈0.01), ‘home safety education’ (p〈0.01), ‘school safety education’(p〈0.001), and, ‘parents’ observance of preventive behaviors' (p〈0.001) showed significantly higher observance of injury preventive behaviors. 4. An analysis of the factors that affect injury preventive behaviors showed that the enabling factor ‘awareness of school safety education’ had the highest correlation with injury preventive behaviors followed by factors, in their order of significance, ‘practice of preventive behavior’, ‘perception to injury accidents’, ‘level of safety knowledge’, ‘parents’ observances of preventive behaviors', and ‘concerns for injury accidents.’

  • We can usually found the children who do overactive and aggressive behaviors. They disrupt classroom order and cause other children immense damage. Their teachers exert themselves to control or manage them in class. This may lead to a reduction of precious time for teaching-learning classroom activities. This study has counseled those children doing overactive and aggressive behaviors with solution-focused brief counseling. This study also explores the following problems. First, how does solution-focused brief counseling affect their overactive and aggressive behaviors? Second, what changes do they experience through solution-focused brief counseling? Third, is solution-focused brief counseling useful in elementary schools? To do this study task, four students have been chosen with the help of teachers in the fifth year at B Elementary School in Ansan. The four children scored high in Mi-hyun Han's 'The ratings of the child's behavior problems' and Se-Yong Jeong's 'Life of school and behavior test'. They are all eleven years old and had two interviews before the experiment and five interviews during the experiment. The analysis of the counseling has been interpreted according to the different analytical methods based on the tasks. Solution-focused brief counseling's effect on children doing overactive and aggressive behaviors has been studied by quantity-analysis method, their changes in behaviors by quality analysis method; phenomenal and psychological method and the usefulness of this counseling in school surroundings by the joint of above two methods. The analysis has provided the following results. First, solution-focused brief counseling has been effective in the reduction of behavioral problems for those children doing overactive and aggressive behaviors and the continuation of the counseling has had a positive effect but it has depended on the individual characteristics and the degree of severity in their behaviors. Second, solution-focused brief counseling has lent itself to encouraging children to have egostrength, confidence, and volition in their behavioral changes with a favorable attitude to the counseling. Third, The egostrength formed through counseling has led children to a progressive direction of their behaviors in their school life. The increasing frequency in counseling has caused a decreasing time-period expected for counseling, and a feasibility of counseling with less resistance. In conclusion, solution -focused brief counseling may be a useful means to help children have positive self-esteem and lead a proper school life, leading to be a helpful facilitation for school site facing a deficiency of counseling.
