  • Traffic information can be broadly categorized into point information and spatial information. Point information can be obtained by chocking only the presence of vehicles at prespecified points(small area), whereas spatial information can be obtained by monitoring large area of traffic scene. To obtain spatial information by image processing, we need to track vehicles in the whole area of traffic scene. Image detector system based on global tracking consists of video input, vehicle detection, vehicle tracking, and traffic information measurement. For video input, conventional approaches used auto iris which is very poor in adaptation for sudden brightness change. Conventional methods for background generation do not yield good results in intersections with heave traffic and most of the early studies measure only point information. In this paper, we propose user-controlled iris method to remedy the deficiency of auto iris and design flame difference-based background generation method which performs far better in complicated intersections. We also propose measurement method for spatial traffic information such as interval volume/lime/velocity, queue length, and turning/forward traffic flow. We obtain measurement accuracy of 95%∼100% when applying above mentioned new methods.

  • While the management of digital contents is getting more and more important, many researchers have studied about scene change detection algorithms to reduce similar scenes in the video contents and to efficiently summarize video data. The algorithms using histogram and pixel information are found out as being sensitive to light changes and motion. Therefore, visual rhythm gets used in recent work to solve this problem, which shows some characteristics of scenes and requires even less computational power. In this paper, a new scene detection algorithm using visual rhythm by direction is proposed. The proposed algorithm needs less computational power and is able to keep good performance even in the scenes with motion. Experimental results show the performance improvement of about 30% comparing with conventional methods with histogram. They also show that the proposed algorithm is able to keep the same performance even to music video contents with lots of motion.

  • In this paper, we propose a luminance correction algorithm based on measuring position for potable luminance measurement system. Measurement position and angle have an affect on the luminance value. We improve the position-based luminance measurement system using luminance correction algorithm based on the measuring angle. We analyze change of luminance value according to the measurement distance and angle from camera and light source. The certified point-luminance meter is used to evaluate a scene luminance measuring method using the image information of camera. Also, we derive an expression equation for evaluating luminance value from determined position. The performances of the proposed system are verified by using comparative experiments with the point-luminance meter using experimental signboard.

  • This paper presents an efficient region-based motion segmentation method for segmenting of moving objects in a traffic scene with a focus on a Video Monitoring System (VMS). The presented method consists of two phases: motion detection and motion segmentation. Using the adaptive thresholding technique, the differences between two consecutive frames are analyzed to detect the movements of objects in a scene. To segment the detected regions into meaningful objects which have the similar intensity and motion information, the regions are initially segmented using a k-means clustering algorithm and then, the neighboring regions with the similar motion information are merged. Since we deal with not the whole image, but the detected regions in the segmentation phase, the computational cost is reduced dramatically. Experimental results demonstrate robustness in the occlusions among multiple moving objects and the change in environmental conditions as well.

  • Through the convergence of Internet technology and various information technologies, it is possible to collect and process vast amount of information and to exchange various knowledge according to user's personal preference. Especially, there is a tendency to prefer intimate contents connected with the user's preference through the flow of emotional changes contained in the movie media. Based on the information presented in the script, the user seeks to visualize the flow of the entire emotion, the flow of emotions in a specific scene, or a specific scene in order to understand it more quickly. In this paper, after obtaining the raw data from the movie web page, it transforms it into a standardized scenario format after refining process. After converting the refined data into an XML document to easily obtain various information, various sentences are predicted by inputting each paragraph into the emotion prediction system. We propose a system that can easily understand the change of the emotional state between the characters in the whole or a specific part of the various emotions required by the user by mixing the predicted emotions flow and the amount of information included in the script.

  • LLAH(Locally Likely Arrangement Hashing) is a method which describes image features by exploiting the geometric relationship between their neighbors. Inherently, it is more robust to large view change and poor scene texture than conventional texture-based feature description methods. However, LLAH strongly requires that image features should be detected with high repeatability. The problem is that such requirement is difficult to satisfy in real applications. To alleviate the problem, this paper proposes a method that improves the matching rate of LLAH by exploiting together the brightness of features. Then, it is verified that the matching rate is increased by about 5% in experiments with synthetic images in the presence of Gaussian noise.

  • The performance of Motion Compensated Discrete Cosine Transform (MC-DCT) video coding is improved by using the region adaptive subband image coding [18]. On the assumption that the video is acquired from the camera on a moving platform and the distance between the camera and the scene is large enough, both the motion of camera and the motion of moving objects in a frame are compensated. For the compensation of camera motion, a feature matching algorithm is employed. Several feature points extracted using a Sobel operator are used to compensate the camera motion of translation, rotation, and zoom. The illumination change between frames is also compensated. Motion compensated frame differences are divided into three regions called stationary background, moving objects, and newly emerging areas each of which is arbitrarily shaped. Different quantizers are used for different regions. Compared to the conventional MC-DCT video coding using block matching algorithm, our video coding scheme shows about 1.0-dB improvements on average for the experimental video samples.
