Purpose: We subjected scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images of the active layer of EBT3 film to texture analysis to determine the dose-response curve. Methods: Uncoated Gafchromic EBT3 films were prepared for direct surface SEM scanning. Absorbed doses of 0-20 Gy were delivered to the film's surface using a 6 MV TrueBeam STx photon beam. The film's surface was scanned using a SEM under 100× and 3,000× magnification. Four textural features (Homogeneity, Correlation, Contrast, and Energy) were calculated based on the gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) using the SEM images corresponding to each dose. We used R-square to evaluate the linear relationship between delivered doses and textural features of the film's surface. Results: Correlation resulted in higher linearity and dose-response curve sensitivity than Homogeneity, Contrast, or Energy. The R-square value was 0.964 for correlation using 3,000× magnified SEM images with 9-pixel offsets. Dose verification was used to determine the difference between the prescribed and measured doses for 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 Gy as 0.09, 1.96, -2.29, 0.17, and 0.08 Gy, respectively. Conclusions: Texture analysis can be used to accurately convert microscopic structural changes to the EBT3 film's surface into absorbed doses. Our proposed method is feasible and may improve the accuracy of film dosimetry used to protect patients from excess radiation exposure.
Whiskers of SiC were grown from the mixture of silica and graphite powders by Acheson method(direct heating method). The structrua, morphological and chemical characterizations have been performed by X-ray diffractometer(XRD), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), optical microscopy(OM), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS). The growth mechanism of SiC whiskers is also discussed.

Structural differences in various divisions of the rabbit colon were investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy. For light microscopic study, various Portions of the colon from seven rabbits (2.5 kg body weight) were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin, and paraffin sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin. Tissues for scanning electron microscopy were fixed in 1% glutaraldehyde-1.5% paraformaldehyde and postfixed in 1% $OsO_4$, dehydrated to 100% alcohol, transfered to isoamilacetate and dried by the critical point method. Subsequently, specimens were coated with gold and viewed with a JSM-35C scanning electron microscope. The colon displays a morphological diversity along its proximo-distal axis. Five regions can be discerned based on the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics. 1) The first segment immediately distal to the cecocolical junction possessing three teniae is approximately 5 cm ($4{\sim}6cm$) in length, and displays irregular folds of the mucosa oriented transversely similar to those of the cecum. 2) The second segment possessing three teniae is about 7 cm ($5{\sim}8cm$) in length, and is characterized by the papilla-like protrusions on the mucosal surface. 3) The third segment, possessing a single tenia is about 16 cm ($12{\sim}20cm$) in length, and also displays the papilla-like protrusions similar to the aforegoing segment. 4) Fusus coli, approximately 4 cm ($3{\sim}5cm$) in length, is free of teniae and exhibits longitudinal folds on the mucosal surface. These four portions together constitute the proximal colon. 5) The distal colon reaches a length of about 58 cm ($53{\sim}55cm$) and shows a pattern of surface irregularities with minor ridges on the mucosal folds.

Silicon carbide (SiC) is a wide-bandgap semiconductor that has materials properties necessary for the high-power, high-frequency, high-temperature, and radiation-hard condition applications, where silicon devices cannot perform. SiC is also the only compound semiconductor material. on which a silicon oxide layer can be thermally grown, and therefore may fabrication processes used in Si-based technology can be adapted to SiC. So far, atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been extensively used to study the surface charges, dielectric constants and electrical potential distribution as well as topography in silicon-based device structures, whereas it has rarely been applied to SiC-based structures. In this work, we investigated that the local oxide growth on SiC under various conditions and demonstrated that an increased (up to ~100 nN) tip loading force (LF) on highly-doped SiC can lead a direct oxide growth (up to few tens of nm) on 4H-SiC. In addition, the surface potential and topography distributions of nano-scale patterned structures on SiC were measured at a nanometer-scale resolution using a scanning kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPM) with a non-contact mode AFM. The measured results were calibrated using a Pt-coated tip. It is assumed that the atomically resolved surface potential difference does not originate from the intrinsic work function of the materials but reflects the local electron density on the surface. It was found that the work function of the nano-scale patterned on SiC was higher than that of original SiC surface. The results confirm the concept of the work function and the barrier heights of oxide structures/SiC structures.

Pure-carbon materials such as graphite, graphene, carbon nanotubes, and diamond have very high thermal conductivities. The reported thermal conductivity of graphene is in the range 3000~5000W/m-K at room temperature. Here, we developed graphene/cu foam hybrid type heat spreader to obtain higher thermal conductivity than Cu foam. Hybrid materials were characterized using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermal conductivity measurement system; LFA (Laser Flash Analysis @ LFA 447, NETZSCH). We suggest that excellent thermal properties of graphene/cu foam hybrid structures are beneficial for all proposed electrical applications and can lead to a thermal management application.
The scanning electron microscopy is an ideal technique for examining plant surface at high resolution. Most hydrate samples, however, must be fix and dehydrate for observation in the scanning electron microscope. Because the microscopes operate under high vacuum, most specimens, especially biological samples, cannot withstand water removal by the vacuum system without morphological distortion. Cryo-techniques can observe in their original morphology and structure without various artifacts from conventional sample preparation. Rapid cooling is the method of choice for preparing plant samples for scanning electron microscopy in a defined physiological state. As one of cryo-technique, high-pressure freezing allows for fixation of native non-pretreated samples up to $200{\mu}M$ thick and 2 mm wide with minimal or no ice crystal damage for the freezing procedure. In this study, we could design to optimize structural preservation and imaging by comparing cryo-SEM and convention SEM preparation, and observe a fine, well preserved Arabidopsis stem's inner ultrastructure using HPF and cryo-SEM. These results would suggest a useful method of cryo-preparation and cryo-SEM for plant tissues, especially intratubule and vacuole rich structure.
Crystalline calcium oxalate occur throughout near)y all plants species in five major forms; styloids, druses, raphids, prisms and sands. These crystals are known to be distributed in specific tissue such as cortex, xylem, phloem, cambium and epidermis. This research was undertaken to identify the occurrence, type, location and ultrastructure of druse crystals in Panax ginseng. In situ visualization, conventional light microscopy, histochemistry and scanning electron microscopy were applied for these purposes. Druse crystals in ginseng were identified as calcium oxalate by silver nitraterubeanic acid histochemistry. Calcium oxalate crystals are observed in nearly all plant organs such as leaf, petiole, peduncle, stem, rhizome, tap root and lateral root except fine root. Most frequent observation of crystals in the leaf and rhizomes were noticed. Three different types of calcium of oxalate druse crystals were identified by scanning electron microscopy.

Silicon carbide (SiC) is an attractive material for high-power, high-temperature, and high-frequency applications. So far, atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been extensively used to study the surface charges, dielectric constants and electrical potential distribution as well as topography in silicon-based device structures, whereas it has rarely been applied to SiC-based structures. In this work, the surface potential and topography distributions SiC with different doping levels were measured at a nanometer-scale resolution using a scanning kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPM) with a non-contact mode AFM. The measured results were calibrated using a Pt-coated tip and a metal defined electrical contacts of Au onto SiC. It is assumed that the atomically resolved surface potential difference does not originate from the intrinsic work function of the materials but reflects the local electron density on the surface. It was found that the work function of the Au deposited on SiC surface was higher than that of original SiC surface. The dependence of the surface potential on the doping levels in SiC, as well as the variation of surface potential with respect to the schottky barrier height has been investigated. The results confirm the concept of the work function and the barrier heights of metal/SiC structures.
Purpose: Direct application of atmospheric-pressure plasma jets (APPJs) has been established as an effective method of microbial decontamination. This study aimed to investigate the bactericidal effect of direct application of an APPJ using helium gas (He-APPJ) on Porphyromonas gingivalis biofilms on sandblasted and acid-etched (SLA) titanium discs. Methods: On the SLA discs covered by P. gingivalis biofilms, an APPJ with helium (He) as a discharge gas was applied at 3 different time intervals (0, 3, and 5 minutes). To evaluate the effect of the plasma itself, the He gas-only group was used as the control group. The bactericidal effect of the He-APPJ was determined by the number of colony-forming units. Bacterial viability was observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and bacterial morphology was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results: As the plasma treatment time increased, the amount of P. gingivalis decreased, and the difference was statistically significant. In the SEM images, compared to the control group, the bacterial biofilm structure on SLA discs treated by the He-APPJ for more than 3 minutes was destroyed. In addition, the CLSM images showed consistent results. Even in sites distant from the area of direct He-APPJ exposure, decontamination effects were observed in both SEM and CLSM images. Conclusions: He-APPJ application was effective in removing P. gingivalis biofilm on SLA titanium discs in an in vitro experiment.
