  • Computed tomography(CT) has been applied to measure micro-defects in the aluminum knuckle parts manufactured by the thixoforming process. 6061 aluminum alloys were used to form knuckle samples in the semi-solid temperature after the SIMA processing of billets. Tensile specimens were cut from the different locations in a thixoformed knuckle. The size and the distribution of forming defects in tensile specimens were analyzed using CT scanning and image analysis technology before tensile tests. It has been qualitatively shown that the stress-strain curves were significantly affected by the size and the distribution of forming defects although the defect sizes lie in the range of micro-meters.

  • We present a dispersive scheme of white-light interferometry that enables not only to perform tomographical measurements of thin-film layers but also to measure a refractive index without mechanical depth scanning. The interferometry is found useful particularly for in-situ 3-D inspection of micro-engineered surfaces such as liquid crystal displays, semi-conductor and MEMS structure, which requires for high-speed implementation of 3-D surface metrology.

  • Vertically coupled low density InGaAs quantum dots (QDs) buried in GaAs matrix were grown with migration enhanced molecular beam epitaxy method as a candidate for quantum information processing devices. We performed excitation power-dependent photoluminescence measurements at cryogenic temperature to analyze the effects of vertical coupling according to the variation in thickness of spacer layer. The more intense coupling effects were observed with the thinner spacer layer, which modified emission properties of QDs significantly. The low surface density of QDs was observed by atomic force microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy verified the successful vertical coupling between low density QDs.

  • Near-field photocurrent experiments were performed for GaAs/AIGaAs MQWs at room temperature. Heavy hole and light hole related peaks are clearly resolved even under extremely low power of near-field excitation. By scanning laterally 2 $\mu\textrm{m}$${\times}$2 $\mu\textrm{m}$ area on the surface, minority carrier diffusion process in the well region was qualitatively studied.

  • Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) prepared by aromatic thiols on gold surfaces have much larger potential for electronic device applications due to their electronic properties. In this study, the formation and structures of SAMs prepared by benzenethiol (BT), toluenethiol (TT), 2-fluorobenzenethiol (2-FBT), 3-fluorobenzenethiol (3-FBT), 4-fluorobenzenethiol (4-FBT), 4-chlorobenzenethiol (4-CBT), 4-fluorobenzenemethanethiol (4-FBMT), and 4-chlorobenzenemethanethiol (4-CBMT) on Au(111) were examined using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and Kelvin probe (KP) to explore the structure and electronic interface properties of eight differently substituted aromatic thiol SAMs on Au(111). And these values are compared with gas phase dipole moments computed by quantum chemical calculations for individual thiol molecules. It was revealed that all eight thiol-molecules form uniform SAMs on Au(111) at $75^{\circ}C$ compared to lower solution temperature by STM observation. The work function change obtained in the KP measurements and calculated molecular dipole moments have the linear relationship while the 4-FBMT and 4-CBMT deviate from this tendency.

  • Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) has been etched by sputtering in the presence of argon gas and the resulting surface modifications investigated via weight loss, time of water permeation, half value period, scanning electron microscope(SEM) and color difference measurements. According to increasing sputter etching time, weight loss increased, the time of water permeation and half value period of the sputter etched PET fabrics decreased. Color depth of fabrics increased by increasing sputter etching time. We investigated the fabric surface modification by SEM. Many microcraters on the fabric surface formed by the sputter etching resulted in increase of surface area of the fabric and wettability.

  • The uniformly dispersed p-Aramid chopped fiber in a variety of rubber was investigated. The cross section and surface properties in a variety of rubber were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM), weight, tensile strength, cold resistance measurements. The 1mm p-Aramid chopped fiber better uniformly dispersed than the other p-Aramid chopped fiber. The p-Aramid of lmm chopped fiber showed excellent adhesion in rubber composite because of homogeneous dispersion. Consequently, the best 1mm chopped fiber and rubber improved the strength of the composite.

  • The stainless steel wire requires good corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, such as drawing ability, combined with a high resistance to corrosion. For increasing drawing ability of stainless steel, Ni coating methods have been used in this study. However, there is no information on the electrochemical corrosion behavior of drawed wires after Ni coating. To investigate corrosion resistance and mechanical property of drawed wire, the characteristics of Ni coated wires have been determined by tensile strength tester, hardness tester, field emission scanning microscope, energy dispersive x-ray analysis and potentiodynamic method in 0.1 M HCl. The drawed stainless steel wires showed the strain-induced martensitic structure, whereas non-drawed stainless steel wire showed annealing twin in the matrix of austenitic structure. The hardness and tensile strength of drawed stainless steel wire were higer than that of non-drawed stainless steel wire. Electrochemical measurements showed that, in the case of drawed stainless steel o ire after Ni coating, the corrosion resistance and pitting potential increased compared with non-coated and drawed stainless steel wire due to decrease in the surface roughness.

  • Helium-oxygen plasma treatments were conducted to modify poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PIT) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) warp knitted fabrics under atmospheric pressure. Lubricant and contamination removals by plasma etching effect were examined by weight loss $(\%)$ measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Surface oxidation by plasma treatments was revealed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses, resulting in formation of hydrophilic groups and moisture regain $(\%)$ enhancement. Low-stress mechanical properties (evaluated by Kawabata evaluation system) and bulk properties (air permeability and bust strength) were enhanced by plasma treatment. Increasing interfiber and interyarn frictions might play important roles in enhancing surface property changes by plasma etching effect, and then changing low-stress mechanical properties and bulk properties for both fabrics.

  • In this paper, in order to reduce the high COO (cost of ownership) and COC (cost of consumables), we have collected the silica abrasive powders by filtering method after subsequent CMP (chemical mechanical polishing) process for the purpose of abrasives recycling. And then, we have studied the possibility of recycle of reused silica abrasive through the analysis of particle size distribution and FE-SEM (field emission-scanning electron microscope) measurements of abrasive powders. It was annealed the collected abrasive powders to promote the mechanical strength of reduced abrasion force. Finally, we compared the CMP characteristics between self-developed KOH-based silica abrasive slurry and original slurry. As our experimental results, we obtained the comparable rate of removal and good planarity with commercial products. Consequently we can expect the saving of high cost slurry.
