Automated detection of interesting web pages could be used in many different application domains. Determining a user's interesting web pages can be performed implicitly by observing the user's behavior. The task of distinguishing interesting web pages belongs to a classification problem, and we choose white box learning methods (fixed effect logit regression and support vector machine) to test empirically. The result indicated that (1) fixed effect logit regression, fixed effect SVMs with both polynomial and radial basis kernels showed higher performance than the linear kernel model, (2) a personalization is a critical issue for improving the performance of a model, (3) when asking a user explicit grading of web pages, the scale could be as simple as yes/no answer, (4) every second the duration in a web page increases, the ratio of the probability to be interesting increased 1.004 times, but the number of scrollbar clicks (p=0.56) and the number of mouse clicks (p=0.36) did not have statistically significant relations with the interest.

Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) variability can be used to study the physics of the region in the vicinity of the central black hole. In this paper, we investigated intra-night optical variability of AGN in the COSMOS field in order to understand the AGN instability at the smallest scale. Observations were performed using the KMTNet on three separate nights for 2.5 to 5 hours at a cadence of 20 to 30 min. We find that the observation enables the detection of short-term variability as small as ~ 0.02 and 0.1 mag for R ~ 18 and 20 mag sources, respectively. Using four selection methods (X-rays, mid-infrared, radio, and matching with SDSS quasars), 394 AGN are detected in the $4deg^2$ field of view. After differential photometry and ${\chi}^2$-test, we classify intra-night variable AGN. The fraction of variable AGN (0-8%) is statistically consistent with a null result. Eight out of 394 AGN are found to be intra-night variable in two filters or two nights with a variability level of 0.1 mag, suggesting that they are strong candidates for intra-night variable AGN. Still they represent a small population (2%). There is no sub-category of AGN that shows a statistically significant intra-night variability.
Four plasma instruments are currently under development for KAISTSAT-4 (K-4) which is scheduled for launch in 2002. They are the Solid-State Telescope, Electro-Static Analyzer, Langmuir Probe, and the Scientific Magnetometer, that will respectively allow in-situ detection of high energy and low energy components of auroral particles, ionospheric thermal electrons, and magnetic field disturbances. These instruments, together with the Far-ultraviolet IMaging Spectrograph, will provide micro-scale physics of Earth's polar ionosphere with detailed spectral information that has not been previously achieved with other space missions. In this paper, we review the concept of the four space plasma instruments as well as the anticipated results from the instruments.
The incidents of massive personal information being leaked are occurring continuously over recent years. Personal information leaked outside is used for an illegal use of other's name and account theft. Especially it is happening on online games whose virtual goods, online game money and game items can be exchanged with real cash. When we research the real identity theft cases that happened in an online game, we can see that they happen massively in a short time. In this study, we define the characteristics of the mass attacks of the automated identity theft cases that occur in online games. Also we suggest a system to detect and prevent identity theft attacks in real time.
Both Geographic Information System and Remote Sensing fields have been nearly neglected or ignored by historical geographers. This paper intends to show the potentiality of satellite images of various spatial reslutions to explore and to express themes of historical geography. Old Chinese maps and atlas were also used to relate the digital values and historical facfors. Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer data might be used as a real image for a contintal scale to show changes in coastal shoreline. Landsat Thematic Mapper Imagery of Beijing showed some of boundaries of old palace. Finally IKONOS images of one meter resolution showed detailed information of landcover and landuse of the City, Beijing. The potential capability and limitation to apply satellite imagery in application of historical geography are also discussed.

This study reviewed terahertz technologies of time domain spectroscopy, T-ray imaging, and high rate wireless data transfer. The main topics of the terahertz research area were investigation of materials and package modules for terahertz wave generation and detection, and setup of the terahertz system for time domain spectroscopy(TDS), T-ray imaging and sub-THz wireless communication. In addition to Poly-GaAs film as a photoconductive switching antenna material, a table-top scale for the THz-TDS/imaging system and terahertz continuous wave(CW) generation systems for sub-THz data transfer and narrow band T-ray imaging were designed. Dielectric properties of ferroelectric BSTO($Ba_xSr_{1-x}TiO_3$) films and chalcogenide glass systems were characterized with the THz-TDS system at the THz frequency range. Package modules for terahertz wave transmitter/receiver(Tx/Rx) photoconductive antenna were developed.
Multi-channel images of 11-MUA and 11-MUOH self-assembled monolayers were obtained by using two-dimensional surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption. Patterning process was simplified by exploiting direct photo-oxidation of thiol bonding (photolysis) instead of conventional photolithography. Sharper images were resolved by using a white light source in combination with a narrow bandpass filter in the visible region, minimizing the diffraction patterns on the images. The line profile calibration of the image contrast caused by different resonance conditions at each points on the sensor surface (at a fixed incident angle) enables us to discriminate the monolayer thickness in sub-nanometer scale. Furthermore, there is no signal degradation such as photo bleaching or quenching which are common in the detection methods based on the fluorescence.

A remote sensing technique to identify trajectories of breaking waves in the surf zone using oblique digital nearshore videos is proposed. The noise arising from white foam induced by wave breaking has hindered accurate remote sensing of wave properties in the surf zone. For this reason, this paper focuses on image processing to remove the noise and wave trajectory identification essential for wave property estimation. The nearshore video imagery sampled at 3 Hz are used, covering length scale(100 m). Original image sequences are processed through image frame differencing and directional low-pass image filtering to remove the noise characterized by high frequencies in the video imagery. The extraction of individual wave crest features is conducted using a Radon transform-based line detection algorithm in the processed cross-shore image timestacks having a two-dimensional space-time domain. The number of valid wave crest trajectories identified corresponds to about 2/3 of waves recorded by the in-situ sensors.

The issue of inspection and characterization of microstructures has emerged as a major consideration in design, fabrication, and detection of MEMS devices. However, the conventional measurement techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging, atomic force microscopy (AFM) scanning, and mechanical surface profiler, require often destructive process or may be difficult to measure with a wafer scale. In this paper, we characterize the surface profiles of microstructures using an optical scanner based on a DVD pick-up module. Scanning images of the microstructures are successfully generated using the intensity of reflected light from different depths of the surface profiles, based on the focus error signal (FES) from photodiodes. It is shown that the proposed optical scanner can be used as an alternative measurement system with high performance and low cost, compared to conventional measurement techniques.

Vector data compression algorithm can meet requirements of different levels and scales by reducing the data amount of vector graphics, so as to reduce the transmission, processing time and storage overhead of data. In view of the fact that large threshold leading to comparatively large error in Douglas-Peucker vector data compression algorithm, which has difficulty in maintaining the uncertainty of shape features and threshold selection, a segmented Douglas-Peucker algorithm based on node importance is proposed. Firstly, the algorithm uses the vertical chord ratio as the main feature to detect and extract the critical points with large contribution to the shape of the curve, so as to ensure its basic shape. Then, combined with the radial distance constraint, it selects the maximum point as the critical point, and introduces the threshold related to the scale to merge and adjust the critical points, so as to realize local feature extraction between two critical points to meet the requirements in accuracy. Finally, through a large number of different vector data sets, the improved algorithm is analyzed and evaluated from qualitative and quantitative aspects. Experimental results indicate that the improved vector data compression algorithm is better than Douglas-Peucker algorithm in shape retention, compression error, results simplification and time efficiency.
