Electrical soundings and mappings were conducted to elucidate the geoelectrical structures of the local area of Cheju Island. The areas of the electrical surveys are coastal areas of Cheju Island, Gwagji, Sinpung-Sincheon. Generally, the geoelectrical structures of these areas are closely related with hydrogeological structures and it is very important to elucidate the geoelectrical structures for the water supply problems. Even though the results of electrical surveys in coastal areas of Cheju Island differ from place to place, there exists a general tendency of resistivity decrease with depth and the zone in the vicinity of mean sea level has low resistivity value. Also, there is good correlation between the low resistivity zone and the ground water distribution in the survey areas. A careful examination of the results of this study enabled resistivities of the rocks in Cheju Island to be divided in some categories. The resistivities of rocks unsaturated with ground water are greater than about 1000 ohm-m. The rocks saturated with fresh water have the resistivity value of about few hundreds ohm-m. Last, the rocks saturated with saline and/or brackish water have the resistivity value of about few tens ohm-m. The subsurface resistivity distribution of Cheju Island seems to be strongly dependent on the hydraulic characteristics of the rocks, and the amount and the salinity of the ground water in the rocks rather than the surface geology of the area.
The physical-based and lumped-parameter hydrologic groundwater flow model for predicting the rainfall-triggered rise of groundwater levels in hillside slopes is developed in this paper to assess the risk of landslides. The developed model consists of a vertical infiltration model for unsaturated zone linked to a linear storage reservoir model(LSRM) for saturated zone. The groundwater flow model has uncertain constants like soil depttL slope angle, saturated permeability, and potential evapotranspiration and four free model parameters like a, b, c, and K. The free model parameters could be estimated from known input-output records. The BARD algorithm is uses as the parameter estimation technique which is based on a linearization of the proposed model by Gauss -Newton method and Taylor series expansion. The application to examine the capacity of prediction shows that the developed model has a potential of use in forecast systems of predicting landslides and that the optimal estimate of potential 'a' in infiltration model is the most important in the global optimum analysis because small variation of it results in the large change of the objective function, the sum of squares of deviations of the observed and computed groundwater levels.

Assuming that tidal level is constantly changed with an amplitude of 10 meters and a cycle of 12 hours, the slope stability for a typical dyke is analysed. The variation of pore water pressure within the dyke during the tidal change is obtained using a computer program, FLUMP, which is incorporated with saturated-unsaturated and transient flow. The results show that the variation of free water surface and distribution of pore water pressure within the dyke during the tidal fluctuations can be clearly predicted with the computer program. When a tide is lowered to the minimum level, the predicted pressure head is higher than the level of the free water surface in some parts of the dyke; that is, excess pore water pressure is generated in a zone affected by the tidal change. Also an unsaturated zone which shows negative pore water pressure is temporally created when a tide is lowered. The shear strength of the zone can be predicted based on the proposal suggested by Fredlund et al. It is emphasized that the excess pore water pressure generated during tidal fluctuations and strength parameters for the unsaturated zone should be considered in analyzing the slope stability of dykes. When those are considered, the critical slip surface seems to be located below the free water surface obtained when a tide is at the lowest.
The amplitude variation with offset of seismic data can detect fluids in the sediment and resolve the petrophysical properties of hydrocarbons in the subsurface. We analyzed and described the amplitude variation in deep sea seismic data obtained from the Ulleung Basin, East Sea. By inspecting seismic CDP-offset and CDP-angle gathers which show a bright reflection event, we decided a target zone for amplitude variation analysis. From the seismic angle gather at the middle of Ulleung Basin, we recognized amplitude increase or decrease versus offset on the intercept-gradient curve. Using the product attribute and Poisson's ratio change attribute computed in terms of intercept with gradient, the top and the base of gas saturated sediments were described. The area of amplitude variation suggestive of the presence of gas saturated sediments is shown at the depth of 3 s traveltime. Anomalous features of seismic amplitude in the Ulleung Basin were classified by the crossplot of intercept and gradient. The background trend of crossplot between intercept and gradient shows an inverse proportional relation that is common for wet sediments. Anomalous amplitudes of Class III fall into the first and the third quadrants on crossplots. We inferred regional gas/water saturated area with the horizontal dimension of 150 m in the Ulleung Basin by cross-section with respect to cross-plot anomaly.

Most of slope failures are triggered by heavy rainfall during rainy season. If the rain keeps on for the season, the water content of the ground increases and its matric suction decrease, and then the safety factor of soil slope gets lower. The change of water table level for soil slope stability dose not describe the behavior of the soil slope in real situation, hence it may be necessary to modify the design standard for slope stability in association with rain infiltration. For correct design, economical construction, and maintenance of a soil slope, unsaturated flow analysis is needed for estimation of slope instability regarding water infiltration and soil behavior on unsaturated soil slopes. The entire soil slope cannot be saturated by prolonged rainfall and wetting band depth (saturated zone) just deepens from slope surface, hence the cause of the shallow surface slide is the wetting band depth depending on rainfall duration and intensity. Therefore, the paper presents the differences between theoretical equation and numerical analysis for wetting band depth on soil surface and its safety factor, and compares the slope stability obtained from unsaturated flow analysis with that obtained from conventional slope stability analysis.
The groundwater survey was carried out by electrical resistivity and resistivity tomography using several kinds of electrode array to delineate the depth of the saturated zone and basement complex, the aquifer system of fractured rock, and the 2-D resistivity structure was obtained by inversion technique. And the hole-to-surface and crosshole tomography were applied for two boreholes and the inverted resistivity tomogram are obtained. The comparison of those data with core logging data was performed and those results were relatively well correlated. And it was possible to find out the configuration of basement and the fracture zone and the aquifer system from the 2-D resistivity structure and resistivity tomogram.
Physical and chemical properties of root zone mixes and methods of green construction are important considerations for improving turf grass quality for putting greens. This study compared Penncross creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.) performance as affected by three root zone construction systems with three amendments (sand, peat, and zeolite). The objective of this study was to determine if an amended California construction system would improve green performance during establishment (1998-1999) and maturation (2000-2001). Three treatments were tested: California ($100\%$ sand), USGA($90\%$ sand and $10\%$ peat, v/v), and California-Z ($85\%$ sand and $15\%$ zeolite, v/v). Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block with four replicates. Physical and chemical properties of the root zone and bentgrass performance were compared for the treatments. The California-Z treatment had the highest saturated hydraulic conductivity, field infiltration rate and the lowest bulk density. It also had the highest cation exchange capacity and plant available nutrient concentrations among the three treatments. The California-Z treatment produced bentgrass quality and color during green establishment and maturation that were equal to or higher than the California treatment, and consistently higher than the USGA treatment. The addition of an inorganic amendment to the California system improved physical and chemical properties of the root zone and improved quality and color of bentgrass during green establishment. During green maturation, creeping bentgrass in the California-Z treatment was equal (6 of 15 sampling dates) or $20\%$ higher (9 of 15 dates) in quality compared to the California system.
Accurate estimations of pre-failure deformations and post-failure responses of geostructures require that the simulation tool possesses at least three main ingredients: 1) a constitutive model that is able to describe the macroscopic stress-strain-strength behavior of soils subjected to complex stress/strain paths over a wide range of confining pressures and densities, 2) an embedded length scale that accounts for the intricate physical phenomena that occur at the grain size scale in the soil, and 3) a computational platform that allows the analysis to be carried out beyond the development of an initially "contained" failure zone in the soil. In this paper, a two-scale micropolar plasticity model will be used to incorporate all these ingredients. The model is implemented in a finite element platform that is based on the mechanics of micropolar continua. Appropriate finite elements are developed to couple displacement, micro-rotations, and pore-water pressure in form of $u_n-{\phi}_m$ and $u_n-p_m-{\phi}_m$ (n > m) elements for analysis of dry and saturated soils. Performance of the model is assessed in a biaxial compression test on a slightly heterogeneous specimen of sand. The role of micropolar component of the model on capturing the post-failure response of the soil is demonstrated.

The ingress of chloride ions plays a crucial role for service life design of reinforced concrete structures. In view of durability design of concrete structures under marine environment, one of the most essential parameters is the surface chloride content of concrete. However, on the basis of the results of in-situ investigation, this value has been determining in the numerous studies on the durability design of concrete structures. Hence, it is necessary to confirm the range of the surface chloride content in order to establish a unified durability design system of concrete. This study suggests a rational and practical way to calculate the maximum surface chloride content of submerged concrete under marine environment. This approach starts with the calculation of the amount of chloride ingredients in normal sea water. The capillary pore structure is modeled by numerical simulation model HYMOSTRUC and it is assumed to be completely saturated by the salt ingredients of sea water. In order to validate this approach, the total chloride content of the mortar and concrete slim disc specimen was measured after the immersion into the artificial sea water solution. Additionally, the theoretical, the experimental and in-situ investigation results of other researchers are compiled and analyzed. Based on this approach, it will follow to calculate the maximum surface chloride content of concrete at tidal zone, where the environment can be considered as a condition of dry-wetting cycles.

Batch test and column test were performed to develop the design factors for permeable reactive barriers(PRBs) against ammonium and heavy metals, Clinoptilolite, a kind of natural zeolites having excellent cation exchange capacity(CEC), was choosen for the reacting materials through the ion-exchange mechanism. In the batch test, the reactivity of clinoptilolite for ammonium, lead, and copper was examined varying the initial concentration of contaminants(ammonium: 20, 40, 80 ppm, heavy metals: 10, 20, 40 ppm) and the particle size of clinoptilolites(0-0.15, 0.42-0.85, 1-1.25 mm). The reactivity is increasing as the initial concentration decrease and particle size decrease. In the column test, the permeability and the reactivity of the specimens were examined using flexible-wall permeameter. Specimens were made of clinoptilolite and Jumunjin-sand with 20 : 80 weight ratio varying particle size of clinoptilolite. The maximum permeability(1${\times}$10$\^$-4/-5${\times}$10$\^$-5/cm/s) was achieved in the specimen made of 0.42-0.85 mm clinoptilolite and sand.
