Although sustainable development of a city should in theory be based on updated spatial information like land cover/use changes, in practice there are no effective tools to get such information. However the development of satellite and sensor technologies has increased the supply of high resolution satellite data, allowing cost-effective, multi-temporal monitoring. Especially KOMPSAT-1(KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite) acquired a large number of images of the whole Korean peninsula and covering some large cities a number of times. In this study land-use patterns and trends of Daejeon from the year 2000 to the year 2003 will be considered using land use maps which are generated by manual interpretation of multi-temporal KOMPSAT EOC imagery and to show the possibility of using high resolution satellite remote sensing data for urban analysis.

This research implemented Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) observation satellite imagery visualization system on a large high-resolution tiled display. This system is designed to help users observe or analyze satellite imagery more effectively on the tiled display using multi-touch and Kinect motion gesture recognition interaction. We developed the multi-scale image loading and rendering technique for the massive amount of memory management and smooth rendering for GOCI satellite imagery on the tiled display. In this system, the unit of time corresponding to the selected date of the satellite images are sequentially displayed on the screen. Users can zoom-in, zoom-out, move the imagery and select some buttons to trigger functions using both multi-touch or Kinect gesture interaction.
In this paper, we investigated a method for feature - based classification to develop software which is suitable to the classification of high resolution satellite imagery . So, we developed related algorithm and designed user interfaces of convenience, considering various elements require for the feature - based classification. The software was tested with eCognition software which is unique commercial software for feature - based classification.
In this paper, we propose a new scheme for matching specified areas in a satellite image, which is a very efficient method because it can be effectively applied to images that have various features. These features may include different spatial resolution and brightness; sometimes they may different geometrical property. The proposed method can be applied to some application fields such as mosaicing of satellite imagery, GCP matching.
The geographical phenomena in space are well observed in the specific scale. This scale is called the operational scale. For an analysis of the optimum scale, it is needed to measure and represent the characteristics of attribute information extracted from the satellite imagery. The development of remote sensing technique makes various images with different resolution available. Researchers can select the image with optimum resolution for their analysis among various resolutions. For an effective analysis of the scale characteristics of satellite image, we investigated the characteristics of attribute information extracted from satellite image with different resolution. The two stage-procedure for exploring the optimum resolution proposed in this study was tested by applying to the satellite imagery covering Sunchon bay. This procedure can be an effective tool utilizing the scale characteristics of attribute information extracted from satellite imagery.
Purpose: This study aims to map the spatial distribution of poverty using nighttime light satellite images as a proxy indicator of economic activities and infrastructure distribution in D.I Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Research design, data, and methodology: This study uses official poverty statistics (National Socio-economic Survey (SUSENAS) and Poverty Database 2015) to compare satellite imagery's ability to identify poor urban areas in D.I Yogyakarta. National Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS), as poverty statistics at the macro level, uses expenditure to determine the poor in a region. Poverty Database 2015 (BDT 2015), as poverty statistics at the micro-level, uses asset ownership to determine the poor population in an area. Pearson correlation is used to identify the correlation among variables and construct a Support Vector Regression (SVR) model to estimate the poverty level at a granular level of 1 km x 1 km. Results: It is found that macro poverty level and moderate annual nighttime light intensity have a Pearson correlation of 74 percent. It is more significant than micro poverty, with the Pearson correlation being 49 percent in 2015. The SVR prediction model can achieve the root mean squared error (RMSE) of up to 8.48 percent on SUSENAS 2020 poverty data. Conclusion: Nighttime light satellite imagery data has potential benefits as alternative data to support regional poverty mapping, especially in urban areas. Using satellite imagery data is better at predicting regional poverty based on expenditure than asset ownership at the micro-level. Light intensity at night can better describe the use of electricity consumption for economic activities at night, which is captured in spending on electricity financing compared to asset ownership.
Satellite data (thermal and color imagery) show that offshore flowing filaments off the west coasts of North America, North and South Africa can influence significantly the cross-frontal mixing in the coastal upwelling zones. To evaluate this role, we investigated structure, dynamics and behavior of surface filaments in the Canary and Benguela upwelling regions on the base of daily satellite IR and VIS imagery (AVHRR NOAA, MODIS-Aqua). It was found that seasonal variability of the filaments location depends on intra-annual shift of general upwelling intensity along the coast. The main statistical characteristics of filaments - length, width, temperature anomaly and estimates of velocity were obtained. Estimates of cross-frontal water exchange due to filamentation based on the statistical data show that these coherent structures play a major role in the water and particle exchange between coastal zone and the open ocean in both upwelling regions.

It was investigated to apply the information of the satellite imagery to the field of urban planning. Built-up area and road area are very important factors in the field of urban planning. To extract these information from the satellite imagery, landcover classes were categorized into the 4 classes, exterior space, built-up area, vegetation and shadow. And it was discussed what is needed for landcover classifications and essential factors on the information extraction.
Searching and enhancement of shadow area in the satellite imagery is one of growing interest because of new possible needs of application in this field. This paper proposes an algorithm to search and enhance the shadow areas caused by buildings such as apartments which are very common in Korean satellite imagery. The proposed searching algorithm makes use of characteristics of histogram of images in the spatial domain and also uses the fast Fourier transform and correlation in Frequency domain. Further, the enhancement algorithm is only applied to the shadow areas searched and preserves the areas which are naturally dark.
Based on current practical needs for geo-spatial information on mobile platform, the main theme of this study is a design and implementation of dynamic 3D terrain rendering system using spaceborne imagery, as a kind of texture image for photo-realistic 3D scene generation on mobile environment. Image processing and 3D graphic techniques and algorithms, such as TIN-based vertex generation with regular spacing elevation data for generating 3D terrain surface, image tiling and image-vertex texturing in order to resolve limited resource of mobile devices, were applied and implemented by using graphic pipeline of OpenGL|ES (Embedded System) API. Through this implementation and its tested results with actual data sets of DEM and satellite imagery, we demonstrated the realizable possibility and adaptation of complex typed and large sized 3D geo-spatial information in mobile devices. This prototype system can be used to mobile 3D applications with DEM and satellite imagery in near future.
