The Comparison of Visual Interpretation & Digital Classification of SPOT Satellite Image

  • The land use type of Korea is high-density. So, the image classification using coarse resolution satellite image may not provide land cover classification results as good as expected. The purpose of this paper is to compare the result of visual interpretation with that of digital image classification of 20 m resolution SPOT satellite image at Kwangju-eup, Kyunggi-do, Korea. Classes are forest, cultivated field, pasture, water and residential area, which are clearly discriminated in visual interpretation. Maximum likelihood classifier was used for digital image classification. Accuracy assessment was done by comparing each classification result with ground truth data obtained from field checking. The classification result from the visual interpretation presented an total accuracy 9.23 percent higher than that of the digital image classification. This proves the importance of visual interpretation for the area with high density land use like the study site in Korea.

  • The land uses of Korean peninsula are very complicated and high-density. Therefore, the image classification using coarse resolution satellite images may not provide good results for the land cover classification. The purpose of this paper is to compare the classification accuracy of visual interpretation with that of digital image classification of satellite remote sensing data such as 20m SPOT and 30m TM. In this study, hybrid classification was used. Classification accuracy was assessed by comparing each classification result with reference data obtained from KOMPSAT-1 EOC imagery, air photos, and field surveys.

  • 여름철에는 집중강우에 의한 산사태, 하천범람, 하천구조물의 피해가 심각하다. 특히 토양침식의 증가는 하상퇴적과 저수량 저하 등의 홍수재해를 발생시키며, 상류에서의 침식증가는 토사의 하천범람, 농경지와 시가지 매몰의 형태로 나타난다. 현재까지의 피해현황 조사는 답사 위주의 조사가 주를 이루고 있어 효율적인 피해조사에 한계가 있으며, 따라서 효과적이며 과학적인 모델링 기법이 필요하다. 이 연구에서는 다양한 공간 해상도의 인공위성영상 분석 비교를 통해 고해상도 위성영상을 모니터링 자료원으로의 활용성을 검토하고자 하였으며, 토사재해(침식/퇴적) 피해 현황 정보의 추출 가능성을 파악하고자 하였다. 또한 위성영상의 해상도별 분석을 통하여 토사재해 피해현황판독 활용 가능성을 연구하였고, 하천 미세지형 변화의 판독을 위한 KOMPSAT 영상의 활용성을 연구하였다.

  • 본 연구는 GPS를 이용하여 위성 영상의 입체 해석으로 산출된 SPOT영상의 기준점 및 수치표고모델의 평가에 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 삼각점 및 상시관측소를 고정으로 한 GPS 해석을 수행하였으며 정지측량과 이동측량의 정확도를 비교함으로써 위성 영상의 기준점과 수치표고모델의 평가를 위한 측량 방법을 분석하였다. 연구 결과 SPOT영상의 해상력을 고려할 때, SPOT 위성 영상의 입체 해석을 통하여 수치표고모델 제작이 가능한 것을 알 수 있었다.

  • The improved accuracy of the Land Cover/Land Use Map constructed using Hyperspectal Satellite Image and the possibility of real time classification of Land Use using optimal Band Selective Factor enable the change detection from automatic classification using the existed Land Cover/Land Use Map and the newly acquired Hyperspectral Satellite Image. In this study, the effective analysis techniques for automatic generation of training regions, automatic classification and automatic change detection are proposed to minimize the expert's interpretation for automatic update of the Land Cover/Land Use Map. The proposed algorithms performed successfully the automatic Land Cover/Land Use Map construction, automatic change detection and automatic update on the image which contained the changed region. It would increase applicability in actual services. Also, it would be expected to present the effective methods of constructing national land monitoring system.

Probabilistic Landslide Susceptibility Analysis and Verification using GIS and Remote Sensing Data at Penang, Malaysia

  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the hazard of landslides at Penang, Malaysia, using a Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing. Landslide locations were identified in the study area from interpretation of aerial photographs and field surveys. The topographic and geologic data and satellite image were collected, processed and constructed into a spatial database using GIS and image processing. The used factors that influence landslide occurrence are topographic slope, topographic aspect topographic curv ature and distance from drainage from topographic database, geology and distance from lineament from the geologic database, land use from TM satellite image and vegetation index value from SPOT satellite image. Landslide hazardous area were analysed and mapped using the landslide-occurrence factors by probability - likelihood ratio - method. The results of the analysis were verified using the landslide location data. The validation results showed satisfactory agreement between the hazard map and the existing data on landslide location.

  • Generally, the quality of satellite images is expressed by GSD (Ground Sample Distance), MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) and SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio). However, these factors are technology-oriented and do not explain interpretability of satellite images. We need a standardized index which shows standard of interpretability. In this study, we estimated NIIRS (National Imagery Interpretability Rating Scale) through the GIQE (General Image Quality Equation) which is able to judge image interpretability with the standardized index. Traditionally, NIIRS has been determined manually by specialized image analysts. We used the GIQE in order to reduce inefficiency and high costs cause by manual interpretation and to produce accurate NIIRS. For monitoring image degradation, we estimated GIQE physical parameters from image analysis and carried out time series analysis about the quality of the KOMPSAT-1 images. On all of the tests, we were able to identify the image degradation due to the changing time. This indicates that NIIRS derived from GIQE will be used for image degradation indicator.

  • Growing urban areas modify patterns of local land use and land cover. Land use changes associated with an urban area can be extensive. One way to understand and document land use change and urbanization is to establish benchmark maps compiled from satellite imagery The use of satellite imagery for monitoring urban growth has been widely demonstrated. Multi-temporal LANSAT TM image data has created the potential for monitoring urban change and land cover identification. In this study, for extracting urban boundary GLCM method and visual interpretation were used in CORONA imagery and SPOT imagery.

  • 오늘날의 지형경관변화 분석은 그 규모와 시공간적 제한으로 말미암아 과거와 같이 연구자의 직접적인 참여관찰에 의해 취득된 정보만으로는 많은 한계를 가지게 된다. 이에 본 연구에서는 위성영상을 이용하여 직접적인 참여관찰이 어려운 해안습지 지역의 대규모 지형경관변화를 분석하는 방법들을 비교, 평가하는 것을 주목적으로 하였다. 연구지역은 지난 10년간 국제공항의 건설로 대규모 지형경관변화를 경험한 영종도 북부 해안습지를 사례지역으로 하였다. 분석방법은 기존의 마스크 기법을 보완한 화소차이 마스크 기법. 화소표준화 마스크 기법, NDVI 마스크 기법을 이용하였다. 분석결과 해안습지의 지형경관변화를 구체적이고 정확하게 반영하는 기법은 NDVI 마스크 기법인 것으로 판단되었다.

ANALYSIS OF THE CHARACTERISTICS ABOUT GYEONG-GANG FAULT ZONE THROUGH REMOTE SENSING TECHNIQUES

  • Lineament is defined generally as a linear feature or pattern on interpretation of a satellite image and indicates the geological structures such as faults and fractures. For this reason, a lineament extraction and analysis using remote sensing images have been widely used for mapping large areas. The Gyeong-gang Fault is a NNE trending structure located in Gangwon-do and Kyeonggi-do district. However, a few geological researches on that fault have been carried out and its trace or continuity is ambiguous. In this study, we investigate the geologic features at Gyeong-gang Fault Zone using LANDSAT ETM+ satellite image and SRTM digital elevation model. In order to extract the characteristics of geologic features effectively, we transform the LANDSAT ETM+ image using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and create a shade relief from SRTM data with various illumination angles. The results show that it is possible to identify the dimensions and orientations of the geologic features at Gyeong-gang Fault Zone using remote sensing data. An aerial photograph interpretation and a field work will be future tasks for more accurate analysis in this area.
