Various methods are used to remediate soil contaminated with heavy metals or petroleum. In recent years, harsh physical and chemical remediation methods are being used to increase remediation efficiency, however, such processes could affect soil properties and degrade the ecological functions of the soil. Effects of soil washing, thermal desorption, and land farming, which are the most frequently used remediation methods, on the physicochemical properties of remediated soil were investigated in this study. For soils smaller than 2 mm, the soil texture were changed from sandy clay loam to sandy loam because of the decrease in the clay content after soil washing, and from loamy sand to sandy loam because of the decrease in the sand content and increase in silt content during thermal desorption, however, the soil texture remained unchanged after land farming process. The water-holding capacity, organic matter content, and total nitrogen concentration of the tested soil decreased after soil washing. A change in soil color and an increase in the available phosphate concentration were observed after thermal desorption. Exchangeable cations, total nitrogen, and available phosphate concentration were found to decrease after land farming; these components were probably used by microorganisms during as well as after the land farming process because microbial processes remain active even after land farming. A study of these changes can provide information useful for the reuse of remediated soil. However, it is insufficient to assess only soil physicochemical properties from the viewpoint of the reuse of remediated soil. Potential risks and ecological functions of remediated soil should also be considered to realize sustainable soil use.
Objective of this study was to investigate adsorption characteristics and kinetic models of $NH_4-N$ to biochar produced from rice hull in respective to mitigation of greenhouse gases. $NH_4-N$ concentration was analyzed by UV Spectrophotometer. For the experiment, the soil texture used in this study was sandy loam soil, and application rates of chemical fertilizer and pig compost were $420-200-370kgha^{-1}$ (N-P-K) and $5,500kgha^{-1}$ as recommended amount after soil test for corn cultivation. Biochar treatments were 0.2-5% to soil weight. Its adsorption characteristic was investigated with application of Langmuir isotherm, and pseudo-first order kinetic model and pseudo-second order kinetic model were used as kinetic models. Adsorption amount and removal rates of $NH_4-N$ were $39.3mg^{-1}$ and 28.0% in 0.2% biochar treatment, respectively. The sorption of $NH_4-N$ to biochar was fitted well by Langmiur model because it was observed that dimensionless constant ($R_L$) was 0.48. The maximum adsorption amount ($q_m$) and binding strength constant (b) were calculated as $4.1mgg^{-1}$ and $0.01Lmg^{-1}$ in Langmuir isotherm, respectively. The pseudo-second order kinetic model was more appropriate than pseudo-first order kinetic model for high correlation coefficient ($r^2$) of pseudo-second order kinetic model. Therefore, biochar produced from rice hull could reduce $N_2O$ by adsorbing $NH_4-N$ to biochar cooperated in sandy loam soil.
Adequate available soil moisture level is considered to be one the most important components in growing high yields of good quality ginseng. Excessive soil moisture may promote stillborn fungal pathogens and cause serious diseases in ginseng fields. This study showed that soil moisture levels for optimum growth and health of ginseng varied with soil texture. Fifty- percent available moisture for sandy loam and 75% for silty loam are the best moisture levels for good growth and higher yield.

Importance of climate change and its impact on agriculture and environment have increased with a rise of greenhouse gases (GHGs) concentration in Earth's atmosphere, which caus an increase of temperature in Earth. Greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), methane ($CH_4$) and nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) in the Upland field need to be assessed. GHGs fluxes using chamber systems in two upland fields having different soil textures during pepper cultivation (2005) were monitored under different soil textures at the experimental plots of National Academy of Agricultural Science (NAAS), Rural Development Administration (RDA) located in Suwon city, Korea. $CO_2$ emissions were 12.9 tonne $CO_2\;ha^{-1}$ in clay loam soil and 7.6 tonne $CO_2\;ha^{-1}$ in sandy loam soil. $N_2O$ emissions were 35.7 kg $N_2O\;ha^{-1}$ in clay loam soil and 9.2 kg $N_2O\;ha^{-1}$ in sandy loam soil. $CH_4$ emissions were 0.054 kg $CH_4\;ha^{-1}$ in clay loam soil and 0.013 kg $CH_4\;ha^{-1}$ in sandy loam soil. Total emission of GHGs ($CO_2$, $N_2O$, and $CH_4$) during pepper cultivation was converted by Global Warming Potential (GWP). GWP in clay loam soil was higher with 24.0 tonne $CO_2$-eq. $ha^{-1}$ than that in sandy loam soil (10.5 tonne $CO_2$-eq. $ha^{-1}$), which implied more GHGs were emitted in clay loam soil.
A series of field and laboratory experiments were conducted to find out the changes of some soil chemical constituents in different soil depth with three different soil textures as Bongnam-clayey, Gwanghwal-silty loam and Mangyeong fine sandy soil on the assessment of reclamation duration in Fluvio-marine soil. The result obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Exchangeable potassium, calcium, magnessium, sodium with manganes, silica and cation exchange capacity were remarkably decreased with assessment of reclamation duration. Decreasing tendency was pronounced more in sandy soil than silty loam or clayly soil. 2. Soil organic matter content in top soil was increased with increasing of reclamation years. From reclamation time, about 30 years in clayly and about 80 years in silty loam and sandy soil were necessary for the maintanance of averaged organic matter content to 2.5%. 3. Potassium activity ratio ($K/{\sqrt{Ca+Mg+Na}}$) was differed with soil depth, soil texture and assessment of reclamation duration. About 50 years is may be necessary for the maintanance of potassium activities ratio in ordinary paddy soil of 0.05-0.2. 4. Percent of adsorbed sodium (PAS), ratio of adsorbed sodium (RAS) and ratio of sodium adsorbtion(RSA) were remarkably decreased with assessment of reclamation duration. Specially, decreasing tendency was pronounced more in sandy soil than silty loam and clayly soil 5. Amount of clay content in subsoil was appearently decreased during 30 years of reclamation, but clay contents in top soil was appearently decreased 50 years after reclamation.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of application of the dolomite particles and the shell powder on soil characteristics, dry matter yield and nutritive value of forage in sandy loam soil at the Experimental Field of National Livestock Research Institute, Suweon, from 1994 to 1996. This was compared with control, lime, dolomite 0.5mm, 2.0mm, 4.0mm, and shell powder in mixed pasture. Although there was no significant difference, average dry matter yield for 3 years was increased with the application of lime, dolomite 2.0mm, 0.5mm, control, 4.0mm and shell powder in order. Average crude protein yield of forages was increased with the application of dolomite 2.0mm, 0.5mm, control, lime, shell powder and 4.0mm in order. Lime requirement was slightly increased from 2,410 to 4,853kg per ha with the lapse of time. Although soil hardness was optimum level by second year, it was apt to become hard little by little. Solid phase of soil was lowered with dolomite 0.5mm treatment. The results demonstrated that dolomite and shell powder could be settled a dust problem in farms and a coast pollution as lime substitutes for soil improvement. Therefore, it is desirable for dry matter yield and crude protein yield to applicate the dolomite 2.0mm every 3 years and the shell powder more frequently in sandy loam soil.

Yellow to reddish brown soil is generally referred to as hwangto and is used in various industries in Korea. Despite the fact that it is used as an inorganic pigment in dancheong, limited studies have been conducted on the properties of pigments associated with soil and on the mineralogical characteristics of hwangto. This study examines how the pedological and mineralogical features of hwangto affect pigment properties. Results indicate that reddish and yellowish soils have differences in terms of soil texture, mineral composition, oil absorption and stability under light. Reddish soil is mostly found in clay regions, whereas Ulleungdo hwangto is found in loam regions. Yellowish soil is mostly present in the clay loam to loam zones. whereas Haenam hwangto exists in the sandy clay loam zone. As a result of a mineralogical analysis, reddish soil is classified into the feldspar group and clay soil. The major minerals in the yellowish soils are similar however these soils differ in terms of clay mineral compositions. results of the characteristics of pigments prepared by the traditional method revealed that the average particle size is in the range of 10-20 ㎛, reddish soil has an average of 20 ml/100 g higher oil absorption than yellowish soil. In addition, reddish soil is more susceptible to discoloration and deterioration under light than yellowish soil. This study confirms that the soil and mineral characteristics of hwangto affect the physical properties and stability of produced pigments. These result can be used as basic data in future studies natural inorganic pigments using hwangto.
This study was investigated to elucidate the pesticide mobility in three different soil textures(Heongseong sandy loam; Chuncheon, loam; Taeback, silty clay loam) and four different gravel contents(0, 20, 40, 60%) of Taebaek soil using soil column. Carbofuran, which ranks the highest water solubility among 7 pesticides(carbendazim, carbofuran, chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin, dimethomorph, diniconazole and endosulfan) was defected over 87% in leachate samples within all soil types from early sampling time. Amount of 5 residual pesticides excluding carbendazim and carbofuran were ordered silty clay loam > loam > sandy loam, indicating pesticide residues are related to percentage of clay contents in soils. Comparing the amount of residual pesticides in soil column(upper, middle and lower layer), 6 pesticides apart from carbofuran were found in the range of $50{\sim}92%$ on the upper layer of silty clay loam and loam. Mobility of pesticides either in soil or leachate samples is dependant on water solubility of pesticide and clay content of soil. The results obtained from four different gravel contents of Tacback soil were similar to the results of three different soil textures. Also it was found that more the gravel contents, faster the flow velocity of leachate water. These results possibly provide an idea to select proper pesticides and to reduce soil and water contamination at alpine and sloped-land.

BACKGROUND: Diquat dibromide is a fast-acting nonselective herbicide and plant growth regulator. In this study, in order to understand the possibility of unintentional pesticide contamination in the following crops, the phytotoxicity and transition of diquat dibromide residue in soil into the following crops such as pepper, radish, lettuce and corn have been assessed through phytotoxicity trial and residual evaluation in the unintentional contamination of the higher residual diquat dibromide. METHODS AND RESULTS: The pepper, radish, lettuce and corn were cultivated in the sandy soil and loam soil where the 35 mg/kg and 90 mg/kg diquat dibromide were applied, respectively. Mild growth inhibition symptoms were observed in radish, lettuce and corn crops at the 90 mg/kg- diquat dibromide treatment on the 30 day of cultivation. Diquat dibromide was analyzed using liquid chromatography QTRAP (LC-MS/MS). The recovery rates of diquat dibromide from soil and crop were determined within range from 89.1 to 116.4% with relative standard deviation less than 14.7%. Diquat dibromide residues in soil were found to be 23.90-30.22 and 69.59-82.57 mg/kg from the 35 mg/kg and 90 mg/kg of diquat dibromide-treated soil, respectively after 30 days of crop cultivation. This result implicates that diquat dibromide did not convert to metabolites and remained mostly in the soil, even though it was partially decomposed during crop cultivation. In addition, the diquat dibromide in pepper and radish that were grown for 47 days, and lettuce and corn that were cultivated for 30 days were detected to be 0.01 mg/kg or less in the sandy loam and loam soil where the 90 mg/kg diquat dibromide was applied. CONCLUSION(S): Diquat dibromide did not cause severe phytotoxicity in the following crops as well as it did not uptake and distribute to the following crops, even though it was considered to be residual in the soil.

The Iksan Ssangneung (twin tombs), a pair of tombs comprising the Daewangneung (large royal tomb) and the Sowangneung (small royal tomb), were constructed in the typical style of stone tunnel and chamber tombs in the Baekje Kingdom during the Sabi period (538 to 660 AD) of ancient Korea. Soil layers exposed during excavation of Sowangneung in a trench east of the tomb are: the bottommost layer, the ground level layer, the Panchuk (rammed earth) layer of the Baekje, the layer created by a grave robbery, and soil recovered during the Japanese colonial period. Soil samples were obtained by segmenting an easy stratigraphic horizon into sub categorized soil layers, and their material properties were analyzed; they are composed mainly of sandy loam based on the particle size distributions. In the site foundation, loamy sand is packed in the bottommost layer, and sandy loam with high sand and silty sand fills most of the overlying layer. The central and topmost portion of the Baekje layer is composed of loam with high clay content. All soil layers show geochemical behaviors similar to those of the bottommost layer. X-ray diffraction analysis verified kaolinite in all layers, also observed in soil layers displaying high crystallinity. Kaolinite and halloysite were identified by scanning electron microscopy. Thus, we conclude that the Baekje layer of the Sowangneung is composed of sandy loam containing kaolin procured from near the site. An impermeable middle to upper layer was created using viscous loam. The top of the tomb was closed tightly.
