In this study, the combustion properties, which are called the reaction-to-fire's performance, of sandwich panels were tested and analyzed according to both ISO 5660 (cone calorimeter method) and EN 13823 (SBI). Several variables including ignition time, mass loss, heat release rate, smoke production rate and $O_2$ density about four sandwich panels and four core materials (thermal insulation material) were evaluated. Combustion properties' similarity and difference of sandwich panels and core materials were compared by materials and test methods respectively. Finally test results were evaluated by Japanese standard building code, National Building code of Canada and EN 13501-1 as well.

Aluminum-faced honeycomb-cored sandwich panels as hull plating can provide structural weight savings when compared with the conventional aluminum single panels. The aim of the present paper is to confirm the feasibility of the sandwich panels for the hull material of fast ferries through designing an 80m class proto-type fast passenger/car ferry. For the case study, the structural design for the same principal particulars using the aluminum single panels is also performed, and the design results for the two types will be compared to confirm the weight savings between the two construction methods. The economics of a ship, being comprised of the shipbuilding cost and ship operaing cost, will require a cost analysis including a quantitative comparison between the two construction methods and the results of the cost analysis will be presented. Finally, the reasons why aluminum sandwich panels have not presently been used as the hull material for large size fast vessels will be discussed.

Wire-woven Bulk Kagome (WBK) is a new truss type cellular metal fabricated by systematic assembling of helical wires in six directions. In this work, the experiments of mechanical behaviors of WBK cored sandwich panels subjected to bending load were performed and the results were compared with those by the corresponding analytic solutions. And also, finite element simulations were performed to validate the optimal design according to the analytic solutions. It is found the sandwich panel with WBK core performed excellently in terms of energy absorption and deformation stability after the peak point as well as the load capacity.

In this paper, a study on low-velocity impact response of honeycomb sandwich panels was done for the changes of impact location and core fabrication angles. The test specimens were made of glass/epoxy laminate facesheet and aluminum honeycomb core. Square samples of 100mm and 100mm sides were subjected under low-velocity impact loading using instrumented testing machine at three energy levels. Impact parameters like maximum force, time to maximum force, deflection at maximum force and absorbed energy were evaluated and compared for the changes of impact location and core fabrication angle. The impact damage size were measured at facesheet surface by 3-Dimensional scanner. Also, sandwich specimens after impact test were cut to analyse the failure mode.
This study deals with dynamic model of composite sandwich panels with functionally graded flexible cores under low velocity impacts of multiple large or small masses using a new improved higher order sandwich panel theory (IHSAPT). In-plane stresses were considered for the functionally graded core and face sheets. The formulation was based on the first order shear deformation theory for the composite face sheets and polynomial description of the displacement fields in the core that was based on the second Frostig's model. Fully dynamic effects of the functionally graded core and face-sheets were considered in this study. Impacts were assumed to occur simultaneously and normally over the top and/or bottom of the face-sheets with arbitrary different masses and initial velocities. The contact forces between the panel and impactors were treated as internal forces of the system. Nonlinear contact stiffness was linearized with a newly presented improved analytical method in this paper. The results were validated by comparing the analytical, numerical and experimental results published in the latest literature.

Many studies have been focused on how to manufacture ultra light metal structures and optimize them. In this study, we introduced a new idea to make sandwich panels with quasi-Kagome truss cores. First, metal sheets with a peculiar pattern of slits were expanded to be meshes, they are crimped into a triangular wave pattern, and then one third of struts were bent reversely to be quasi-Kagome trusses. Finally, two face sheets were bonded on the upper and the lower sides. The bending strength was estimated through elementary mechanics for the sandwich specimens with two kinds of face sheet the results of estimation were compared with the those of finite element analyses and experiments.
The finite element solutions of thermal buckling load values of the graded sandwich curved shell structure are reported in this research using a higher-order kinematic model including the shear deformation effect. The numerical buckling temperature has been computed using an in-house specialized code (MATLAB environment) prepared in the framework of the current mathematical formulation. In addition, the mathematical model includes the excess structural distortion under the influence of elevated environment via Green-Lagrange nonlinear strain. The corresponding eigenvalue equation has been solved to predict the critical buckling temperature of the graded sandwich structure. The numerical stability and the accuracy of the current solution have been confirmed by comparing with the available published results. Thereafter, the model is extended to bring out the influences of structural parameters i.e. the curvature ratio, core-face thickness ratio, support conditions, power-law indices and sandwich types on the thermal buckling behavior of graded sandwich curved shell panels.

This paper experimentally investigates the characteristics of Al-honeycomb sandwich panels which are considered as a promising primary strength member of weight critical large structures. Some tests on the aluminum honeycomb panels subject to 3-point bending or uniaxial compression or crushing load are carried out. Based on the test results, linear elastic response, buckling/ultimate strength and crushing/energy absorption capacity are discussed. Some guidelines for design of aluminum honeycomb panels are given.

This study was experimentally carried out to evaluate flexural creep properties of sandwich panels with polymer concrete facings. Specimen was made using polymer concrete facing and polyestyrene form core that has an excellent insulation capacity. Test results showed that, in 90 days of loading, the flexural creep was 1/292 under 40% of stresslevel and 1/780 under 60% stress level.

The purpose of this study was to analyze factors influencing insulation performance of inorganic Autoclaved Lightweight Concrete(ALC) sandwich wall panels with the application of shear connectors. To analyze the effect of shear connectors on the thermal performance of sandwich wall panels, heat transfer analysis was conducted by using the three-dimensional heat transfer simulation software. Four types of shear connector such as Pin, Clip, Grid, and Truss were selected for insulation performance analysis. Thermal bridge coefficient was calculated by varying typical panel thickness and shear connector thickness and materials such as steel, aluminum, and stainless steel. The results showed that Grid and Truss type widely distributed along the section of sandwich wall panel had a great influence on the thermal bridge coefficient by changing the influence factors. Based on the results of thermal and structural performance analysis, effective heat transmission coefficient of the sandwich wall panel satisfying the passive house insulation criteria was calculated. As a result, it was found that heat transmission coefficient was increased from $0.132W/m^2{\cdot}K$ to $0.141{\sim}0.306W/m^2{\cdot}K$ depending on the shear connector types and materials. In the majority of cases, the passive house insulation criteria was not satisfied after using shear connectors. The results of this study were likely to vary according to how influence factors were set, but it is important to apply the methods that reduce the thermal bridge when there would be a possibility of greatly affecting the insulation performance.
