  • High-frequency (126-㎑) bottom backscattering measurements with various bottom types were conducted at the water tank in Ocean Acoustic Laboratory, Hanyang University. For the purpose of investigating the energy distribution of bottom scattering with various bottom types, the sediment was varied with gravel, sand, sandy mud and mixed bottoms. To examine the anisotropic nature of the scattering due to the orientations of bottom ripple, the footprints were made transverse and longitudinal to the direction of incident wave. The total scattering characteristics are that the larger grazing angles the larger backscattering strengths become and backscattering strengths for a transverse ripple case are higher than those of longitudinal ripple case. finally, the variations of scattering strength depend mainly on the ripple's orientation.

  • In this study, sand casting process was applied to manufacture a large aluminum turbo-type fan used for tank powerpack. To apply the sand casting method, the turbo fan was reverse engineered, and after designing three gating systems, the optimal gating system design was selected by performing casting simulation. In the case of the bottom up-gating system, there is a significant temperature loss of the molten alloy during blade filling. When the molten alloy is completely filled into the sand mold, the blade upper tip and front shroud are below the liquidus temperature. In the case of the top down-gating system, molten alloy scattering occurs, but the temperature loss while the blade is filled is smaller than that of the bottom up type. And after the inflow of molten alloy into the mold is completed, the blade upper tip and front shroud are higher than the liquidus temperature. A sand mold was manufactured with the top down-gating system and the casting process was performed. The fan was made perfectly in appearance without any unfilled parts.

  • In general, sand compaction pile(SCP) method and gravel compaction pile(GCP) method have been mainly used to reinforce soft soils such as soft clay or loose sandy ground. But the sand compaction pile method has problems such as lack of sand supply and destroying the nature while collecting sand, the gravel compaction pile method has a problem such as decreased permeability of the drainage material due to clogging. Recently, the study to replace sand with bottom ash which has similar engineering properties with sand is in active. As a fundamental research on bottom ash mixture compaction pile utilizing bottom ash, its behavioral characteristics depending on granular materials and replacement ratio has been simulated numerically. In particular, Settlement Reduction Ratio(SRR) according to the distance from the center of pile was calculated. The main findings were as follows. Change values of Mixture Compaction Pile's SRR according to granular materials showed similar patterns and stiffness of the composite soil is increased depending on the replacement ratio so SRR showed decreased patterns. Especially, when the replacement ratio is in 20~40%, it increase significantly. When the replacement ratio is over 40%, it increase slowly. When considering the economics, 30~40% replacement ratio is appropriate.

  • The purpose of this research was to describe the mechanisms and prevention of initial degradation in turbidity of the sand filter effluent. The method used was by adding a coagulant (PAC) to the sand filter after backwashing as a means of reducing turbidity. It was found that adding 80 mg/L of PAC solution to the sand filter was very effective in improving the initial effluent turbidity. A turbidity removal efficiency of 99 % was observed in the initial term period as compared to a 70% efficiency without PAC addition. The PAC solution added to the sand filter resulted in high aluminum concentration at the upper layer as compared with the bottom layer of the sand filter column. A change in the zeta potential to a strong positive-ions at upper layer was observed at this time but only a small change was obtained at the bottom. This result showed that the zeta potential of the sand was changed to positive with PAC coating. The effect of pH on zeta potential with PAC addition was also investigated. Zeta potential was greatly changed to positive-ion at pH 4~6. A series of experiments was then conducted in this study to optimize the pH of the PAC solution to be added to the sand filter after backwashing. The removal efficiency of turbidity was found to be highest at pH 5. This result suggested that hydrolyzed aluminium species attached to the surface of the sand enhanced the removal of turbidity of the effluent.

  • In this study relative density tests of bottom ash and standard sand were carried out. And cyclic triaxial tests for samples with the relative density of 40%, 55%, and 70% were carried out on the basis of the test results. Cyclic triaxial tests were also conducted for fines content with 55% relative density. Residual samples were divided into No.40, No.60, No.60, and No.100, and No.200. In order to avoid crashing that can happen when compaction of the sample is initiated, bottom ash was crushed using the a compact mold. In consideration of the crushing characteristics of each residual samples, the fragmentation rate increased up to 30%, which led to the adjustment of fine-grained amount to 10%, 20%, and 30%. Through the repative triaxial test in accordance with the relative density, resistant characteristics of the liquefaction of bottom ash was analyzed. Test results show that, crushing strength of bottom ash was smaller than that of standard sand, resulting in different liquefaction behavior characteristics. And we could find fines content with maximum resistant characteristics of the liquefaction.

  • From the analyses of 16 bottom sediment samples and current data obtained during field expert ments from August to September 1987, the textural characteristics and transport mode of sand grains of a tidal sand ridge in Gyeonggi Bay are studied. The textural characteristic of the bottom sediments are diverse depending on their location on the tidal sand ridge. Sands on the crest are well sorted. near symmetric in skewness. leptokurtic in kurtosis. and are unimodal in peakedness. On the other hand, Poorly sorted gravelly sands in the trough are coarse skewed in skewness and plartkurtic in kurtosis. The mean values of U/SUB 100/ (velocity at one meter above bottom) and U/SUP */ (boundary shear velocity) are calculated to be 41.4 cm/sec and 2.39 cm/sec, respectively. From the analyses of characteristics of the sediments and currents in the study area, it can be concluded that almost all the sands of the tidal sand ridge (esp. on the crest) are transported as bedload (mainly as saltation).

  • The effects of adhesive substrates and bottom materials on the release of fertilized eggs by the Pacific cod, (Gadus macrocephalus) were examined to find an effective release method. Palm twin as an adhesive substrate displayed a significantly elevated adhesive rate compared to gulf weed. However, the survival rate of the fertilized eggs attached to palm twin was as low as 17.5% 8 days after fertilization (DAF). In contrast, fertilized eggs in the absence of adhesive substrate displayed the highest survival rate (47.0%). Concerning bottom materials, the survival rate of fertilized eggs on sand was significantly high (approximately 51.1%) on 8 and 9 DAF. The observations indicates that adhesive substrates are not needed and spawning ground bottom materials such as sand or mud should be considered when releasing fertilized eggs of Pacific cod.

  • In this study, bottom ash, lightweight aggregate, and Expanded Polystyrene was used to lighten the mortar. In order to compensate the reduction of strength caused by lightening, the waste foundry sand produced as solid waste was substituted for fine aggregate. As the device of reducing the ratio of absorption, the procedure of mixture was altered to check the effectiveness of surface coating of porous lightweight aggregate. It was observed over 170kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ compressive strength at gravity about 1.3, an over 380kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at gravity about 1.7. the maximum strength was occurred when 30% of fine aggregate was replaced was replaced with waste foundry sand, and the ratio of absorption was decreased over 10% by changing the procedure of mixture.

  • This research was performed for analyzing the transport of suspended solids during the harbor construction. In behalf of the research, we have analyzes the characteristics of suspended solids movement in sand reclamation of breakwater according to age of tide and tidal period at the construction spot of Pusan new harbor. In the process of sand reclamation, soil was dumped by a dumping device which direct soil from the barge to the bottom of the sea. According to the results from this research, suspended solid concentration was very high in the range of 5m from the dumping point right after the dumping. However these suspended solids settled very quickly and the solids concentration was very beyond 10m from the dumping point. It is deduced that the movement of solids dumped from barge has the tendencies as following; 1) Most of the dumped solids precipitated quickly after the dumping 2) The rest of the suspended solids are diffused slowly toward the bottom of the water being figured smoothing curve 3) The diffusion movement of suspended solids tend to proceed toward the shore line in a parallel motion with tidal current at the sea-bottom That is to say, most of the suspended solids precipitated very quickly even though highly concentrated solids produced at the bottom of the solids which did not precipitated spread with the tidal current horizontally along the bottom of the sea.

  • This study investigates relative density test of standard sand and bottom ash which were devided into No.40, No.60, No.100, No.200 and resonant column tests were conducted for samples with the relative density of 40%, 55%, and 70% on the basis of the test results. Resonant column tests were also conducted for each residual bottom ash which contains the passing sample of No.200 with the relative density of 55%. By compressing each residual sample with the compaction energy of A-compact mold test, the passing percentage of No.200 sieve increased up to 30%, which led to the adjustment of relative density to 10%, 20%, and 30%. Test results show that maximum shear modulus and damping ratio of bottom ash are smaller than those of standard sand because crushing strength and unit weight of the former are smaller than those of the latter.
