  • The Ministry of Agriculture and Fishery had carried out a random sample survey on rice yield by the method of plot cutting since 1959 to obtain correct statistics on rice production. There are important problems connected with the determination of optimum size and shape of sample plot, variation of yield between plots and field and variation in the time needed for different types of plot cutting. This kind of research has been performed in India by Dr. P. V. Sukhatme and Dr. V. G. Panse. Also the same optimum procedures are much different in Japan that in India. In Korea, the optimum procedures may well be different from either of these countries. Although the government is proceeding with the crop yield survey, it does not attempt to investigate plot problems but emphasize total rice yield estimation. This particular research was conducted on a scale enough that the author could personally supervise all of the work.

  • This paper proposes an optimal control scheme for shaft position control using microcomputer-based state-variable feedback. In this scheme a performance index was set up in order to ruduce the overshoot and improve the steady- state response speed, and the time-variant system parameters were identified in real time for optimal control. As a result of experiment, the over-shoot was not occured and the response speed was improved 2. 9 times about proportional control. This scheme improves the performance against the variation of load and sampling time, and adding the integral control in this scheme can reduce the steady-state error without any change in response time.

  • Typical of large, oligotrophic lakes, Lake H$\ddot{o}$vsg$\ddot{o}$l, Mongolia, exhibits complex morphometry which should support a spatially heterogeneous community of benthic macroinvertrates. The lake also exhibits a broad range of land uses. Based on the variation in land use and complex physical habitat of the lake (e.g. substrate variation and presence of affluent streams in bays), we asked two questions. First, does density of total benthic macroinvertebrates vary between different bays in Lake H$\ddot{o}$vsg$\ddot{o}$l? Second, does density of individual benthic taxa vary by bay? Samples collected in 1997, the last year for benthic sampling of the lake, were designed to test for variation in macroinvertebrate density between bays and can now be used to establish baseline variation in density for future studies. A total of 56 Ponar grab samples were analyzed from six bays in Lake H$\ddot{o}$vsg$\ddot{o}$l. Results of a general linear model analysis of variance showed that total density of macroinvertebrates varied only slightly between bays of the lake, but that most individual taxa showed significant variation between bays. Variation in density for most taxa was linked to substrate composition rather than other geographic or physical variables in the lake. Recent increases in grazing intensity and ecotourism along the shores should be managed to reduce the nutrient load into the lake to avoid impairment of the benthic biota of this unique, ancient ecosystem.

  • Background: Studies of morphological variation within and among populations provide an opportunity to understand local adaptation and potential patterns of gene flow. To study the evolutionary divergence patterns of Schlegel's Japanese gecko (Gekko japonicus) across its distribution, we analyzed data for 15 morphological characters of 324 individuals across 11 populations (2 in China, 4 in Japan, and 5 in Korea). Results: Among-population morphological variation was smaller than within-population variation, which was primarily explained by variation in axilla-groin length, number of infralabials, number of scansors on toe IV, and head-related variables such as head height and width. The population discrimination power was 32.4% and in cluster analysis, populations from the three countries tended to intermix in two major groups. Conclusion: Our results indicate that morphological differentiation among the studied populations is scarce, suggesting short history for some populations after their establishment, frequent migration of individuals among the populations, and/or local morphological differentiation in similar urban habitats. Nevertheless, we detected interesting phenetic patterns that may predict consistent linkage of particular populations that are independent of national borders. Additional sampling across the range and inclusion of genetic data could give further clue for the historical relationship among Chinese, Japanese, and Korean populations of G. japonicus.

  • Long-term passive diffusive samplers(PDS) have been used to measure $NO_2\;and\;SO_2$ concentrations at 21 sampling sites in Daejeon, Korea during the period of January 2000 - December 2002. The spatial distributions of annual $NO_2\;and\;SO_2$ concentrations were mapped. Average annual $NO_2$ concentration over the sampling period was $28.5{\pm}12.5\;ppb$, ranging from 1.2 to 81.7 ppb. Average annual $SO_2$ concentration over the sampling period was $7.7{\pm}4.8\;ppb$, ranging from 0.6 to 26.8 ppb. On average, $NO_2$ concentration was approximately 5.8%(1.6 ppb) larger in 2002. $SO_2$ concentration was decreased by 13%(1.1 ppb) during the sampling period. The seasonal variation of $NO_2\;and\;SO_2$ concentration was observed with a tendency to be higher in fall and winter. $NO_2\;and\;SO_2$, concentrations measured at different site types(patterns of land use) show significant difference. The observed difference in concentration was associated with difference in emissions of $NO_2$ from motor vehicles and $SO_2$ by non-traffic fuel consumption for heating.

  • A study on comparison of standard charcoal tube method, infrared gas analyzer, and detector tube method were conducted. Measurements were performed simultaneously at same sampling points in an air chamber containing benzene, toluene and xylene vapors. Charcoal tube samles were collected at sampling flowrates of 0.05, 0.2, 0.5, and 1.0 1pm. Results are as follows : 1. Coefficients of variation of results with charcoal tube method for bezene, toluene and xylene mixture vapor were 14.34 % in benzene(0.28-11.12 ppm), 9.20 % in toluene (2.68-135.09 ppm) and 10.21 % in xylene (2.56-82.64 ppm), respectively. 2. Results of infrared gas analyzer in mixture air were non-specific on benzene and toluene. Ratio of results of infrared gas analyzer to those of charcoal tube on benzene, toluene and xylene were 696.4 %, 30.3 % and 36.6 %, respectively. 3. Ratio of responses of detector tubes to those of charcoal tube were 49.4 % in benzene, 22.1 % in toluene and 223.9 % in xylene. Xylene detector tube were interfered by toluene greately. 4. Collection efficiencies of charcoal tubes at low concentraton(benzene : 1 ppm, toluene : 10 ppm, xylene : 10 ppm) were stable on various flowrate from 0.05 to 1.0 1pm, but at high concentrations the efficiency decreased at high flowrate above 0.5 1pm. 5. Within the saturation capacity of charcoal, collection effiency decreased at 0.5-1.0 1pm. Smpling feowrates of 0.05-0.20 1pm were appropriate for sampling organic vapors.

  • Main monthly household surveys conducted by Korea National Statistical Office are economically active population survey(EAPS) and household income and expenditure survey(HIES). Samples of these two surveys are redesigned every 5 years based on Census. This paper is about sample redesign of household survey conducted in 2002 based on 2000 Census. Main improvements of 2002 sample redesign are the introduction of rotation sampling system, the expansion of HIES survey area from urban to whole country and the foundation of basement to make small area estimation for the unemployment statistics. Also the number of sample households within a enumeration district(ED) is reduced from 24 to 20. That makes it possible to select more ED samples which provides better precision for EAPS and HIES. To select representative samples for the population, different classification index is used for each metropolitan area and provinces.

  • Exposure to fugitive dust can contribute to several respiratory health problems, and proper sampling of fugitive dust is necessary to assess exposure. However, field sampling of soil dust encounters problems from spatial and temporal differences in soil properties, field operations, and meteorological conditions. To minimize these problems, we designed a dust generator that simulates dust generation from soil. The dust generator consisted of a rotating chamber where soil samples were loaded and tumbled, and a settling chamber, where airborne soil dust samples were collected. As standard operating conditions, we decided on 2 g soil mass, 10 min sampling time, and 20 rpm rotating speed, with a flow rate of 30 l/min, based on three common soil textures of loam, sandy loam and silt loam. To evaluate optimal operating conditions, we used mixtures of Joomoonjin silica sand and clay. Although the average $PM_{10}$ concentration of Joomoonjin silica sand was low, dust concentrations were increased by an increased content of clay. The dust concentrations were consistent across repeated experiments, and showed similar concentration profiles during the sampling time with mixtures of clay and sand (coefficient of variation was $13.6{\pm}w;7.1%$). The results demonstrated that these standard operating conditions were suitable for the dust generator, which can be used to investigate variations in soil properties that affect dust production and potential potency of fugitive dust exposure.

  • In this paper, minimum sampling rates and method of nonlinear characterization were suggested for low power, quasi-memoryless PAs. So far, the Nyquist rate of the input signal has been used for nonlinear PA modeling, and it is burdening Analog-to-digital converters for wideband signals. This paper shows that the input Nyquist rate sampling is not a necessary condition for successful modeling of quasi-memoryless PAs. Since this sampling requirement relives the bandwidth requirements for Analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) for feedback paths in digital pre-distortion systems, relatively low-cost ADcs can be used to identify nonlinear PAs for wideband signal transmission, even at severe aliasing conditions. Simulation results show that a generic memoryless nonlinear RF power amplifier with AMAM and AMPM distortion can be successfully identified at any sampling rates. Measurement results show the modeling error variation is less than 0.8dB over any sampling rates.
