  • A rainwater recharge model, which is combined with the quasi-three dimensional unconfined groundwater flow, is proposed in the present paper. The water budget in the catchments of the planned new campus of Kyushu University is evaluated by the present method that calculates both the surface runoff and groundwater flow simultaneously. The results obtained in the present study reveal that the calculated monthly and annual runoff discharges agree reasonably well with the observed discharge. Combining the rainwater recharge model, the two-phase groundwater flow equation is numerically solved f3r the entire area including the low land where the salt water intrusion is observed. The calculated depth of the salt-fresh interface agrees reasonably well with the observed ones at several cross sections. On the other hand, however, it is found that the calculated water budget remains uncertain because of lack of information on the accurate potential evapotranspiration including rainfall interception. In conclusion, however, it is found that the proposed method is applicable for the areas where the horizontal flow is dominant and the interface is assumed to be sharp.

  • The behavior characteristics of the saltwater intrusion in the Seomjin River Estuary by the inflow of fresh water were analysed by the field observation using CTD in the neap tide in January, June, and August 2013 as well as a numerical model, EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code). As a result, Seomjin River Estuary is found that the saltwater intrusion is sensitive to the tide and tidal and freshwater flow. The results of field observation and numerical model were similar in the range of salt, but the results of salt wedge distribution were quite different. The observation of tide and tidal current as well as hydrographic surveying the Seomjin River Estuary will be jointly conducted for the accurate analysis.

  • Water supply is decreasing due to climate change, and coastal and island regions are highly dependent on groundwater, reducing the amount of available water. For sustainable water supply in coastal and island regions, it is necessary to accurately diagnose the current condition and efficiently distribute and manage water. For a precise analysis of the groundwater flow in the coastal island region, submarine fresh groundwater discharge was calculated for the Seongsan basin in the eastern part of Jeju Island. Two methods were used to estimate the thickness of the fresh groundwater. One method employed vertical interpolation of measured electrical conductivity in a multi depth monitoring well; the other used theoretical Ghyben-Herzberg ratio. The value using the Ghyben-Herzberg ratio makes it impossible to accurately estimate the changing salt-saltwater interface, and the value analyzed by electrical conductivity can represent the current state of the freshwater-saltwater interface. Observed parameter was distributed on a virtual grid. The average of submarine fresh groundwater discharge fluxes for the virtual grid was determined as the watershed's representative flux. The submarine fresh groundwater discharge and flux distribution by year were also calculated at the basin scale. The method using electrical conductivity estimated the submarine fresh groundwater discharge from 2018 to 2020 to be 6.27 × 106 m3/year; the method using the Ghyben-Herzberg ratio estimated a discharge of 10.87 × 106 m3/year. The results presented in this study can be used as basis data for policies that determine sustainable water supply by using precise water budget analysis in coastal and island areas.

  • The study is aimed to find out the causes of rapidly increasing chloride (Cl$^{-}$) concentration of the Samyang 3rd pumping station originated from coastal springs of Cheju since January 1996. The study results show that it was caused by following complicated natural and anthropogenic effects. Due to severe draught in 1996 with total rainfall of only 41.7% of annual mean of the last 36 years (1991 to 1995), it creates firstly), significant decrease of the spring discharges as well decline of the groundwater level at the site . Sea water level was in general 4.4 cm to 12.4 cm higher than the groundwater level of the site during 2 to 3.8 hours at each high tide. Those higher potential head of sea water motivates the sea water intrusion into the fresh water lens through the permeable clinkers and fracture zones situated beneath the existing grouted zone which was installed to a maximum 10 m below the ground water surface, The repeated expansion and contraction of the fresh water lens occurred by periodic changes of the sea water level at high and low tide accelerates secondly the enlargement of the transition zone between the fresh and sea water at the site. The decrease of recharge amount by rainfall shortage creates thirdly the reverse flow at the interface of sea water and groundwater. The repeated groundwater extraction of 2790${\pm}$450 $m^3$d$^{-1}$ at the time of low tide, when the fresh water lens of the sire is under the contraction stare, makes additional drawdown of the ground water level and induces the upconing of salt water into the fresh water lens. The duration of spring discharge whose Cl concentration is less than 150 mg/1 at the low tide measured at the nearby springs was about two hours with discharge rate of 532 $m^3$d$^{-1}$ and after that Cl$^{-}$ concentration is increased up to more than 1900 mg/ι.eased up to more than 1900 mg/L.
