  • The TMSR-SF0 simulator is an integral effect thermal-hydraulic experimental system for the development of thorium molten salt reactor (TMSR) program in China. The simulator has two heat transport loops with liquid FLiNaK. In literature, the 95% level confidence uncertainties of the thermophysical properties of FLiNaK are recommended, and the uncertainties of density, heat capacity, thermal conductivity and viscosity are ±2%, ±10, ±10% and ±10% respectively. In order to investigate the effects of thermophysical properties uncertainties on the molten salt heat transport system, the uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of the heat transfer characteristics of the simulator system are carried out on a RELAP5 model. The uncertainties of thermophysical properties are incorporated in simulation model and the Monte Carlo sampling method is used to propagate the input uncertainties through the model. The simulation results indicate that the uncertainty propagated to core outlet temperature is about ±10 ℃ with a confidence level of 95% in a steady-state operation condition. The result should be noted in the design, operation and code validation of molten salt reactor. In addition, more experimental data is necessary for quantifying the uncertainty of thermophysical properties of molten salts.

  • We examined the effect of electrode fingers and gaps of coplanar interdigitated electrode (IDE) structures to characterize the ammonium salt-containing polyelectrolyte film of resistance-based humidity sensors. IDEs designed for this purpose were flexible gold electrodes deposited on a polyimide substrate using a printing process because the geometry presents a potential for tunable sensitivity over other electrode designs. The basic design of the sensors consisted of IDEs with a different number of electrode fingers such as 3, 4, and 5 and gap sizes of 310, 360, 410, and $460{\mu}m$. Details of the AC complex impedance characteristics such as the Nyquist plot, Bode plot, and activation energy based on electrode construction were investigated.

  • In this study, experiments were carried out to measure the variations in the corrosion potential and current density of polarization curves with amorphous $Fe_{70}Cr_5Si_{10}B_{15}$ and $Co_{70}Cr_5Si_{10}B_{15}$ alloy ribbon. The results were particularly examined to identify the influences of corrosion potential including various conditions such as hydrochloric acid, temperature, salt, pH, and oxygen. The optimum conditions were established with variations including temperature, salt, pH, oxygen, corrosion rate, and resistance of corrosion potential. The mass tranfer coefficient(${\alpha}$) value was determined with the Tafel's slope for the anodic dissolution based on the polarization effect with optimum conditions. The second anodic current density peak and maximum passive current density were designated as the critical corrosion sensitivity($I_{r}/I_{f}$).

  • A new and simple calibration technique that greatly enhances the measurement sensitivity of conventional fiber-optic reflectometry based on Fresnel reflection from the tip of a fiber is used for demonstrating the feasibility of measuring solute concentrations and index changes in fluids to very high precision. The amplitude of pulses originating from reflection from the fiber-fluid interface is compared in real-time with the amplitude of reference pulses from a fiber-air interface such that errors caused by pulse amplitude fluctuations and slightly varying detector responses are corrected. Using solutions of salt and water, it is demonstrated that the technique is capable of measuring index changes of about $1 {\times} 10^{-5}$ corresponding to a salt concentrations of 0.01 %.

  • This study aimed to determine the optimal thickness of the active layer and scan mode for a flexible radiochromic film (F-RCF) based on the active lithium salt of pentacosa-10,12-diynoic acid (LiPCDA). F-RCFs of 90, 120, 140, and 170-㎛ thickness were fabricated using LiPCDA. Several pieces of the F-RCFs were exposed to doses ranging from 0 to 3 Gy. Transmission and reflection modes were used to scan the irradiated F-RCFs. Their dose-response curves were obtained using a second-order polynomial equation. Their sensitivity was evaluated for both scanning modes, and the uniformity of the batch was also examined. For both the transmission and reflection modes, the sensitivity increased as the film thickness increased. For the reflection mode, the dose response increased dramatically under 1 Gy. The value of the net optical density varied rapidly as the thickness of the film increased. However, the dose-response curves showed a supralinear-curve relationship at doses greater than 2 Gy. The sensitivity of the reflection scan at doses greater than 2 Gy was higher than that of the reflection scan within 0-2 Gy. The sensitivity steadily decreased with increasing doses, and the sensitivity of the two modes was within 0.1 to 0.2 at 2 Gy and was saturated beyond that. For the transmission scan, the sensitivity was approximately 0.2 at 3 Gy. For the intra-batch test result, the maximum net optical density difference of the intra-batch was 5.5% at 2 Gy and 7.4% at 0.2 Gy in the transmission and reflection scans, respectively. In the low-dose range, film thickness of more than 120-㎛ was proper in the transmission mode. In contrast, the transmission mode showed a better result compared to the reflection mode. Therefore, the proper scan mode should be selected according to the dose range.

  • A selective and highly sensitive spectrophotometric measurements have been developed for the determination of trace mercury(II) with thiosulfate and PAR. Hg(II)-thiosulfate complex was extracted into high molecular alkylamine such as quaternary ammonium salt and back extracted into 1 M-HCl solution. The Hg(II)-PAR complex has maximum absorbance at 499 nm and obeys Beer's law in the range of 0.04~1.0 $\mu g/mL$ of mercury(II). The molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity are $6.27\times 10^4 L.mole^{-1} cm^{-1}$ and $3.2\times 10^{-3}g/cm^2$ respectively.

  • We carroed our to measure the variations of potential with current density (polarization curves) for poly(ethyleneterephthalate). The results were particularly examined to identify the influences on corrosion potential and corrosion rate of various factors including temperature, pH, exposure time, salt, and enzyme. The Tafel slope for anodic dissolution was determined by the polarization effect depending on these conditions. The optimum conditions were established for each case. The second anodic current density peak and maximum passive current density were designated as the relative corrosion sensitivity$(I_r/I_f)$. The mass transfer coefficient value$(\alpha)$ was determined with the Tafel slope for anodic dissolution based on the polarization effect with optimum conditions.

  • Two computational methods for determining equilibrium states for the Mark-IV electrorefiner (ER) have been assessed to improve the current computational electrorefiner model developed at University of Idaho. Both methods were validated against measured data to better understand their effects on the calculation of the equilibrium compositions in the ER. In addition, a sensitivity study was performed on the effect of specific unknown activity coefficients-including sodium in molten cadmium, zirconium in molten cadmium, and sodium chloride in molten LiCl-KCl. Both computational methods produced identical results, which stayed within the 95% confidence interval of the experimental data. Furthermore, sensitivity to unavailable activity coefficients was found to be low (a change in concentration of less than 3 ppm).
