Temperature Effect in the process of DAF as pretreatment of SWRO (해수담수화 전처리로서 DAF공정에서 고온의 해수에 대한 영향 특성)

  • Flocculation and flotation are used as pretreatment steps prior to the reverse osmosis (RO) process. During seawater treatment, high temperature can change the water chemistry of seawater during the process of coagulation. It also affects bubble volume concentration (BVC) and bubble characteristics. Coagulants such as alum and ferric salts at $40^{\circ}C$ can also change flux rates in the seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) process. In this study, the bubble characteristics in dissolved air flotation (DAF), used as a SWRO pretreatment process, were studied in synthetic seawater at $20^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$. The flux of an RO membrane was monitored after dosing the synthetic seawater with coagulants at different temperatures. Results showed that BVC increases as the operating pressure increases and as the salt concentration decreases. The bubble size released at $40^{\circ}C$ is far smaller than that at $20^{\circ}C$The addition of a ferric salt is effective for turbidity removal in synthetic seawater at $20^{\circ}C$; it is more effective than alum. When synthetic seawater was dosed with a ferric salt, the RO membrane flux increased by 27 % at $40^{\circ}C$.

Characterizing the Quality of Salted Mackerel Prepared with Deep Seawater (해양심층수를 이용한 간고등어 제조 및 품질 특성)

  • This study investigated the quality of salted mackerel prepared with deep seawater concentrate and salt. The quality of the salted mackerel product prepared with deep seawater was compared to that prepared with surface and intermediate seawater salts, sun-dried salt, and refined salt. After preparing the salted mackerel products using the five salts, the products were stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 35 days. Quality characteristics compared were the acid value (AV), peroxide value (POV), lipophilic browning, volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), pH, viable cell count, and sensory factors. The deep seawater salted mackerel product had the lowest AV, POV, browning value, and viable cell counts, compared to the others, while it had the highest score in the sensory evaluation.

A Comparative Study on the Use of Seawater and Sea Salt in Nutrient Elimination (영양염제거에서 해수 및 해수염에 관한 비교연구)

  • An excess in the nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphate leads to a phenomenon called eutrophication. In order to avoid this, numerous methods have been used to remove excess nutrients in the water. In this study, the use of a chemical method was assessed through the formation of magnesium ammonium phosphate. The difference in the removal efficiency of seawater and sea salt solution as primary sources of $Mg^{2+}$ ions and $Ca^{2+}$ ions for the formation of magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) and hydroxyapatite (HAP) respectively, were observed, taking into account the changes in pH and concentration. The results showed that seawater removed about 90 % phosphate and less than 50 % ammonia in sewage water condition, whereas the sea salt solution removed almost 90 % phosphate and 70 % ammonia in solution at pH 9 and 10 mM concentration of sea salt which further increases as the optimum ${Mg/PO_4}^{3-}$, ${NH_4}^+$ ratio reaches 2. The difference in the removal efficiency of seawater and sea salt was due to the fact that the set-ups were prepared in different conditions. This study suggests that both seawater and sea salt can be used to remove nutrients from the water. The relatively higher removal of phosphate can be explained by the formation of HAP from free $Ca^{2+}$ ions initially present in seawater and sea salt solution.

Serum Stress Responses during Seawater Acclimation in Coho Salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch (은연어의 해수 순치에 따른 스트레스 반응의 변화)

  • Stress response to the seawater acclimation in coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) smolt was investigated. Salt concentration of rearing water was gradually increased for 3 days from freshwater to seawater (30 ppt salt level). The changes of serum concentrations of cortisol as a primary stress indicator, and as secondary indicators, glucose (GLC), lactate (LAC), triglyce.ide (TG), cholesterol (CHOL), sodium ion $(Na^+)$, chloride ion $(Cl^-)$ and enzyme activities (alanine aminotransferase, ALT: aspartate aminotrasferase, AST; lactate dehydrogenase, LDH) were quantified during the acclimation experiment. Among them, cortisol, LAC, TG, CHOL, ALT, AST concentrations showed rapid increase at the first exposure to the 10ppt salt level (day 1), and began to decrease to the constant values after day 2 of adaptation at 20ppt salt level. However, LDH concentration tended to decrease during the whole experimental period. $Na^+\;and\;Cl^-$ showed slight decrease at day 1, and increased to a little bit higher values after day 2 rather than those in freshwater. All the fishes started on taking a food after day 4 of seawater adaptation. From these results, to reduce osmotic shock inducible stress to fish in seawater acclimation, gradual increase of salt levels is recommended.

  • In this study, the specimens of cement clinker minerals such as 80C3-S-15C4AF-5C3A added various blending materials were immersed in artificial seawater. In order to ascertain the effect of SO3 and blending materials on seawater resistance of the specimens, the acceleration experiment in the artificial seawater was carried out by repeating of immersion and drying operation periodically. As inner part of the specimen immersed in artificial seawater, Friedel's salt was produced by reaction with Cl ion. In outer part of the specimen, gypsum and ettringite were mainly formed. With the increase of SO3 content in the specimen the formation of ettringite was increased and Frieldel's salt in inner part was decreased. Total pore volume of the specimens was increased according to the amount of Cl ion penetrated and Mg(OH)2 leached in the solution.

Distribution properties of seasonal airborne sea salt in the seashore (해안가의 계절별 비래염분량의 분포 특성)

  • When the concrete structures are in contact with seawater, concentration of chloride for estimating chloride diffusion coefficient can be defined as the chloride concentration of sea water. However, in case the concrete structures, constructed in the seashore, aren't directly in contact with seawater, it is difficult to establish the interface concentration of chloride. In addition, marine concrete structures are greatly affected by salt attack such as rebar corrosion, among the cause of salt attack, airborne sea salt is primary factor. Therefore, in this study, salt attack environment by airborne sea salt was investigated in terms of a seasonal distribution at 33 spots, 6 areas in the East, West, South coast for 1 year. Results indicated that in the South coast, the amount of the airborne sea salt is comparatively higher in summer. in the West coast. higher in winter. On the other hand, in the East coast, the amount of the airborne sea salt is rarely affected by a season.

  • For concrete structures immersed in seawater, the concentration of chloride used to estimate the chloride diffusion coefficient can be defined as the seawater chloride concentration. However, for seashore concrete structures which are not coming into direct contact with seawater, establishing the interface concentration of chloride becomes delicate. In addition, concrete structures are greatly affected by salt attack primarily due to airborne sea salt like it can be seen through the corrosion of rebar. This study intends to investigate characteristics on the salinity of airborne sea salt by height. Salinity measurement devices were installed at height of 2, 10 and 19m on the seashore water tower located in the area of Samchuk in the Eastern coast. Analysis results of the decrease of salinity with respect to the height above the ground at a distance of 30m from the seashore showed that the reduction reached about 40$\%$ at a height of 10m and 60$\%$ at 20m.

A Study on Boron Removal by Mineral Cluster Coagulant for Seawater Desalination Application

  • Seawater desalination technology is a complicated and expensive process. Besides salt removal from seawater, thesignificant problem that needs to be solved is boron removal. Boron removal is difficult so it is a considerable challenge for the desalination process. The main technology of this process is reverse osmosis (RO). RO can remove salt and boron more effectively than other technologies. In a conventional seawater desalination process, coagulant is utilized for pre-treatment but it is difficult to remove boron through this stage. In this study, a coagulant called Mineral Cluster was examined for boron removal. Therefore, Mineral Cluster can be considered a potential coagulant for boron removal in seawater desalination technology.

Effect of gas hydrate process on energy saving for reverse osmosis process in seawater desalination plant (해수담수화플랜트에서 가스 하이드레이트 공정 도입을 통한 역삼투 공정의 에너지 절감 효과)

  • Gas hydrate (GH) process is a new desalination technology, where GH is a non- stoichiometric crystalline inclusion compounds formed by water and a number of gas molecules. Seawater GH is produced in a low temperature and a high pressure condition and they are separated from the concentrated seawater. The drawback of the GH process so far is that salt contents contained in its product does not meet the fresh water quality standard. This means that the GH process is not a standalone process for seawater desalination and it needs the help of other desalting process like reverse osmosis (RO). The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of GH process on energy saving for RO process in seawater desalination. The GH product water quality data, which were obtained from a literature, were used as input data for RO process simulation. The simulation results show that the energy saving effect by the GH process is in a range of 68 % to 81 %, which increases as the salt removal efficiency of the GH process increases. Boron (B) and total dissolved solids (TDS) concentrations of the final product of the hybrid process of GH and RO were also investigated through the RO process simulation to find relavant salt rejection efficiency of the GH process. In conclusion, the salt rejection efficiency of the GH process should exceed at least 78% in order to meet the product water quality standards and to increase the energy saving effect.
