  • The accumulation of salt contamination could be the source of electrical accident. The degree of contamination on outdoor insulator is represented by ESDD(equivalent salt deposit density). The salt is transported by the wind to the outdoor insulator and cleaned by the rain. So, we can estimate the relation between climatic data and ESDD by using the multiple regression method. The results of pre-study presented the high relation coefficient(0.874). But these results couldn't apply to another period So, this paper improves above problem by mathematical process of climatic data The main method is accumulation of passed climatic data and conversion of the rainfall by the wind. Then, we confirmed the increasement of relation coefficient(0.898).

  • The present study was undertaken to determine the regulation of heat shock proteins (HSP) in the kidney in hypertension. Two-kidney, one clip (2K1C) or deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt hypertension was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats. At weeks 1 and 4 after inducing the hypertension, the expression of HSP70, HSP32 and HSP25 was determined in the kidney by Western blot analysis. In 2K1C hypertension, the expression of HSP70, HSP32 and HSP25 was increased in the clipped kidney at both weeks 1 and 4. However, in the contralateral kidney, their expression was not significantly altered at week 1, but increased at week 4. In DOCA-salt hypertension, the expression of HSP remained unaltered in the remnant kidney at week 1, but significantly increased at week 4. These results indicate that HSP are differentially regulated in the kidney according to the duration and the model of hypertension.

  • This study analyzes guidelines to select optimum number of grids to represent behavior of a given water system appropriately. The EFDC model was chosen as a 3-D hydrodynamic and water quality model and salt was chosen as a surrogate variable of pollutant. The model is applied to an artificial canal that receives salt water from coastal area and fresh water from a river from respective gate according to previously developed gate operation rule. Grids are subdivided in vertical and horizontal (longitudinal) directions, respectively until no significant changes are found in salinity concentrations. The optimum grid size was determined by comparing errors in average salt concentrations between a test grid systems against the most complicated grid system. MSE (mean squared error) and MAE (mean absolute error) are used to compare errors. The CFL (Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy) number was used to determine the optimum number of grid systems for the study site though it can be used when explicit numerical method is applied only. This study suggests errors seem acceptable when both MSE and MAE are less than unity approximately.

  • Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which is a common species of yeast, is by far the most extensively studied model of a eukaryote because although it is one of the simplest eukaryotes, its basic cellular processes resemble those of higher organisms. In addition, yeast is a commercially valuable organism for ethanol production. Since the yeast data can be extrapolated to the important aspects of higher organisms, many researchers have studied yeast metabolism under various conditions. In this report, we analyzed and compared metabolites of Saccharomyces cerevisiae under salt and pH stresses of various strengths by using two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy. A total of 31 metabolites were identified for most of the samples. The levels of many identified metabolites showed gradual or drastic increases or decreases depending on the severity of the stresses involved. The statistical analysis produced a holistic outline: pH stresses were clustered together, but salt stresses were spread out depending on the severity. This work could provide a link between the metabolite profiles and mRNA or protein profiles under representative and well studied stress conditions.

  • A study on vegetation in the Mangyeong River and Dongjin River basins and the surrounding regions of the Saemangeum Reclaimed Land was conducted in a series of efforts to determine the expected ecological changes in the salt marshes, to restore their vegetation, to explore the restoring force of halophyte, to examine the community mechanism and, ultimately, to rehabilitate marshy land vegetation along the lakeside, coastal dune and salt marshes of the Saemangeum Project Area. The findings of the study may be summed up as follows: Five species such as Suaeda japonica, Salicornia herbacea, Atriplex gmelini, Aster tripolium and Suaeda asparagoides that are mostly distributed in the estuary of the Saemangeum Reclaimed Land were analyzed to examine the mechanism of halophyte to maintain their community. To find out the strategies of plants for survival and the cause of forming community structure, a research was made as for appearance ratio of young sapling. From the results of laboratory analysis into dynamics of the saplings of halophyte, it was revealed that the germination ratio of the dry area and submerged area decreases in the order of Suaeda asparagoides, Suaeda japonica, Salicornia herbacea, Atriplex gmelini and Aster tripolium.

  • Objective: Gastric cancer is an important public health problem in the world and Turkey. In addition to Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), smoking, alcohol consumption and family history, certain dietary factors have been associated with its occurrence. The impact of dietary habits and life-style factors on the risk of gastric cancer in Turkey were evaluated in this study. Design: A questionnaire was applied to 106 patients with gastric adenocarcinoma and 106 controls without cancer matched for age (range 28-85 years) and gender selected from a hospital based population. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated with logistic regression analysis. Results: The incidence of H. pylori was 81.3% in patients. Frequent consumption of salty dishes, very salty foods like pickles, soup mixes, sausages, foods at hot temperature (ORs = 3.686, 7.784, 5.264, 3.148 and 3.273 respectively) and adding salt without tasting (OR = 4.198) were associated with increased gastric risk. Also heavy smoking and high amount of alcohol consumption (p = 0.000) were risk factors. Frequent consumption of green vegetables, onion, garlic and dried fruits (ORs = 0.569, 0.092, 0.795 and 0.041) was nonsignificantly associated with decreased risk. Conclusion: Improved dietary habits, reducing salt consumption and eradication of H. pylori infection may provide protection against gastric cancer in Turkey.

  • The degree of contamination on outdoor insulator is one of the most important factors for the determination of insulation level. And the salt, NaCl, is known as the most dangerous contaminants in the most region of the world. As shown through the preceding study, we could find the close relationship between the generation and deposition of salt contaminants and the meteorological conditions. To analyze the relationship, we monthly measured the ESDD for some sites with brush wiping method, and daily measured the density for one site with the automatic measuring apparatus. And, with the measured data and the meteorological data from KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration), we analyzed the relationship between the two factors with regression method. Through the results of this investigation, we could quantify the comparative contribution of the climatic factors for the pollution level of outdoor insulator, and the results could be used as a useful reference for the maintenance of overhead lines and substations.

  • Low-Z particle electron probe X-ray microanalysis (low-Z particle EPMA) was applied to characterize aerosol particles collected at Gosan in Jeju island during an IOP (intensive observation period) for an international ACE-Asia project in April, 2001. Various types of atmospheric particles such as organics, carbon-rich, aluminosilicates, silicon oxide, sodium nitrate, sodium chloride, and ammonium sulfate were observed. The reacted sea salt particles such as sodium nitrate were the most abundantly encountered, but original sea salt particles were rarely observed. Since the Low-Z particle EPMA can provide quantitative information on the chemical composition of aerosol particles, many different particle types on the basis of their chemical compositions were observed and identified. In this study, it is demonstrated that the Low-Z particle EPMA can provide detailed information on the chemical compositions for the aerosol particles collected for six consecutive days in April, 2001, at Gosan super-site.

  • The noodle is one of the most popular meal as a main dish in Korea and onions are reported to contain high levels of flavonoids such as quercetin, aglycone, and quercetin 4-glycoside. This study was conducted to develop the wet noodle with onion juice and to examine the cooking quality, textural properties of it. Five sensory attributes such as gloss, chewiness, adhesiveness, odor, and taste were used for sensory evaluations. Optimal amount of onion(149.5 g) and salt (6.5 g) satisfied target sensory score(7.0) was suggested by response surface methodology. The wet noodle with optimal amount of onion juice and salt was tasted by 100 consumer and showed high score(6.67) in overall acceptability. Cooking quality was measured through absorption of water, volume, degree of turbidity. The volume, water absorption, and cooking water turbidity of cooked wet noodle with onion juice(experimental noodle) were significantly(p<0.01) higher than the control one. Texture profile analysis of experimental noodle showed a lower score of hardness, adhesiveness, springiness, and chewiness. However, it appeared that the experimental noodle showed higher score for cohesiveness than the control noodle.

  • Soysauce was made in the salt concentrations of 22.0% and 28.5%, and the changing aspects in nucleotides and their related compounds, free amino acids, free sugars and non-volatile amines which are related to the taste components during the fermentation process with a view to examining the taste components in the ordinary Korean soysauce were studied. And then artificial soysauce was prepared by applying the values derived from the analysis and measurement, and its sensory evaluation was performed. As the result of the sensory evaluation of artificial soysauce prepared according to the value of components analyzed from soysauce which had been fermented for fourty days in the salt concentration of 22.0%, it has been found that artificial soysauce was similar in taste to ordinary Korean soysauce. So, the following facts have been found: glutamic acid and aspartic acid have MSG-like taste, and IMP has a synergistic effect with these acids, which play great roles in ordinary Korean soysauce; both free sugars such as galactose and amino acids such as glycine, alanine and lysine have sweet taste; both amines such as tyramine and histamine, and amino acids such as valine, leucine, isoleucine, and phenylalanine have bitter taste; these components, combined with saline taste of salt and sour taste of organic acids, are assumed to form the unique taste in the ordinary Korean soysauce.
