  • Up to now, Plasma applications are thought as a leading technology in industrial, chemical and even medical and biological field. Especially, Due to direct discharge in liquid with reaction in ambient solution, plasma in liquid is useful plasma technology. Such as electro-surgery, water purification, radical generation for synthesis. For using those plasma applications efficiently, plasma characteristics should be understood in advance. But discharge in liquid is not much well-known about its characteristics. And plasma discharge in solution is difficult to generate and analysis due to electrolysis, vaporization and radical generation. So, We make stable plasma discharge in solution(saline 0.9%) without input gas. We also analyze new type of plasma source in thermal and electrochemical view. And we check characteristics of plasma in liquid. For example, plasma density and radical density(OH) with optical emission, thermal energy with thermometer, electrical energy with oscilloscope and so on. And we try to explain the bubble and plasma formation with circuit analysis.

  • In this study, the effects of starvation on floc characteristics when treating saline wastewater using a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) were investigated. The effectiveness over 5 days of starvation for aerobic and non-aerobic strategies for maintaining the physical characteristics of floc-forming sludge and the recovery period needed to regain the initial pollutant removal efficiency were investigated. Experiment results revealed that the sludge volume index (SVI) increased and the floc size and fractal dimension decreased after starvation under both aerobic and non-aerobic conditions. Sludge settleability deteriorated faster under aerobic conditions compared to non-aerobic conditions. Under non-aerobic conditions, the SBR required less time to return to its initial pollutant removal efficiency and settleability. Floc size, fractal dimension, and SVI were observed to be fairly correlated with each other. The results demonstrated that it was better to maintain the sludge under non-aerobic rather than aerobic starvation, because it adapted to, resisted starvation and had a quicker re-start afterward.

  • Citrate-capped silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely used in industry, consumer products and medical appliances. However, information on the toxicity, environmental fate and toxicokinetics are not enough. In this study, stability of citrate-capped AgNPs was investigated using different types of isotonic solution, which is important in the toxicokinetic study by the exposure route of intravenous injection. Size, morphology, zeta potential and ion formation were investigated in isotonic solutions for the physico-chemical characterization of AgNPs. Aggregation and precipitation of AgNPs were observed in saline or phosphate-buffered saline while they were stable without precipitation in 2% glycerol of isotonic solution. The average size of AgNPs in 2% glycerol was 6~10 nm, which was almost same as that in water-based suspension of AgNPs. Zeta potential was ranged from -30 mV to -60 mV, which was in the range of original stock AgNPs. The stability was maintained during the whole experimental period of 48 hours. Furthermore, the stability was not changed in different temperature (10~36$^{\circ}C$) and at different concentrations (10~1,000 ppm). The osmolarity of the AgNPs suspension was $299{\pm}1$ mOsm/kg which was in isotonic range. These data suggest that AgNPs in 2% glycerol solution can be used for the preparations of intravenous injection for toxicokinetic study without undesired disturbance of blood isotonicity.

  • A decrease in the circulating levels of estrogen, occuring as a consequence of post menopausal decline or from surgical ovariectomy, results in an accelerated loss of bone. Estrogen has been shown to stimulate lysyl oxidase activity, and the treatment with estrogen increased the pyridinium content of cortical bone. a trivalent mature cross-links collagen fibrils named pyridinoline, which is especially abundant in collagen of cartilage and bone, markedly increases with growth in humans and rats. The main aim of this study was to examine the increased bone loss caused by ovariectomy through monitoring the concentrations of the collagen and the pyridinium cross-links of collagen, pyridinoline. The ovariectomized rats, 4 weeks old, were divided at random into two or three groups of 5. Ovariectomies were carried out on both of the saline-treated group(OVX(NH)) and the estrogen-treated group(OVX(H)) using the dorsal approach and sham operations were performed on the sham-operated group(sham). They were maintained under identical conditions for 4 or 8 weeks and were allowed free access to food and water. it was observed that there was no significant difference between the control group and the sham-operated group, however, the control group had a higher content of collagen than the saline-treated group after 4 weeks and 8 weeks. Based on these results, iot is supposed that estrogen can enhance collagen synthesis and affects the pyridinoline formation in collagen fibrils through stimulating lysyl oxidase activity.

  • The aim of this study was to measure and compare the micro shear bond strengths of the following dentin bonding systems to the dentin surfaces under simulated pulpal pressure: All Bond $2^{\circledR},{\;}Second^{\circledR},{\;}AdheSE^{\circledR}$, Adper Prompt $L-Pop^{\circledR}$. The occlusal surfaces of 180 extracted human molars were prepared so the dentin bonding surfaces could be exposed. The teeth were randomly assigned to 3 equal groups of 60 each and subdivided. The dentin surfaces were treated with the above mentioned bonding system and resin composite cylinders were built up under a simulated pulpal pressure when saline (Group II) or diluted bovine serum (Group III) was used as the pulpal fluid. As a control. the same procedures were performed in the dried dentin surfaces (Group I). After one day of storage in water. the micro shear bond strengths were measured using an EZ tester. Group II and III showed significantly lower shear bond strength than Group I statistically (p < 0.05). $SEbond^{\circledR}{\;}and{\;}AdheSE^{\circledR}$ showed no difference among the different dentin condition. In the Adper Prompt $L-Pop^{\circledR}$. a simulated pulpal pressure were applied to the specimens using diluted bovine serum. which showed a higher strength than the specimens in which saline was used (p < 0.05).

  • As one of the steps toward understanding how the plant is well adapted to strongly saline habitats, the purple pigment compound that is accumulated in Suaeda japonica was extracted and characterized. The extracted pigment compound exhibited typical characteristics of betacyanin that were represented by water solubility, pH- and temperature-dependent color changes, sensitivity to light, UV-Vis spectra, and gel electrophoretic migration pattern. LC-MS of the extracted pigment compound showed the presence of two major protonated molecular ions ($[M+H]^+$) at m/z 651.1 and m/z 827.1. According to the DPPH assay, it was found to have an antioxidant activity that is linearly increased in proportion to the reaction time for up to 30 min, and the activity was comparable to that of control BHA at 9.0 mg/ml. The cytotoxic activity against several tumor cell lines was also examined following the MTT assay. The significant growth inhibitory effect was observed on two tumor cell lines, SW-156 (human kidney carcinoma) and HEC-1B (human endometrial adenocarcinoma). Probably, the pigment compound may function as an osmolyte to uphold halotolerant physiological processes in saline environment.

  • The objective of this work was to analyze organic matter removal, nitrification, biomass growth and membrane fouling in a submerged flat-sheet membrane bioreactor, fed with synthetic wastewater, of similar composition to the effluents generated in a fish meal industry. After biomass acclimatization with saline conditions of 12 gNaCl/L and COD/N ratio of 15 in the bioreactor, results showed that the organic matter removal was higher than 90%, for all organic loading rates (0.8, 1, 1.33 and $2gCOD/L{\cdot}d$) and nitrogen loading rates (0.053, 0.067, 0.089 and $0.133gN/L{\cdot}d$) tested during the study. However, nitrification was only carried out with the lowest OLR ($0.8gCOD/L{\cdot}d$) and NLR ($0.053gN/L{\cdot}d$). An excessive concentration of organic matter in the wastewater appears as a limiting factor to this process' operating conditions, where nitrification values of 65% were reached, including nitrogen assimilation to produce biomass. The analysis of membrane fouling showed that the bio-cake formation at the membrane surface is the most impacting mechanism responsible of this phenomenon and it was demonstrated that organic and nitrogen loading rates variations affected membrane fouling rate.

  • 50 submandibular glands of rabbits were examined historadiologically after infusion with normal and over volumes of physiologic saline and 5 radiographic contrast media. The results were as follows: 1. All water soluble contrast media showed similar radiographic contrasts and absorbed about 5 minutes after infusion except Telebrix 30 which took 30 minutes in both normal and overfilled glands. 2. Lipid soluble medium, Lipiodol UF had excellent radiographic contrast and could be seen on the radiograms even after 24 hours after infusion. 3. Salivary glands infused with physiologic saline didn't show any histologic changes except slight duct dilation right after infusion. 4. Telebrix 30 caused mild to moderate duct dilation and inflammation at immediate & 24 hours after infusion which was more severe in overfilled glands. At 7 days after infusion, there were mild to moderate fibrosis of the gland and areas of necrosis was seen in overfilled glands. 5. Hypaque 60% showed similar histologic reactions to Telebrix 30 except more severe tissue destruction at 7 days after infusion. 6. Urografin 60% showed mildest histologic changes among the media used in the study. 7. Biliscopin had mild duct dilation which returned to normal after 7 days but there were moderate inflammation and tissue necrosis at that time. 8. Lipiodol UF showed severe duct dilation with numerous vacuoles and there were tissue fibrosis at 7 days after infusion but no tissue necrosis was seen.

  • Water movement in the Young San River Estuary where a sea dyke was constructed, was observed using anacoustic doppler profiler (ADP) and two TGPS buoys for 25 hours on 27-28 July 2000. Hydrographic observations were simultaneously taken using CTD to understand the characteristic of the spacial structure of temperature and salinity. A large quantity of fresh water was discharged from the sea dyke on 26 July 2000. The observation period fell on neap tide. The amplitude of the tidal elevation and the maximum velocity of the tidal current were about 4 m and 12 cm/sec respectively. The water movement at the surface layer is mainly controlled by wind, and those at the other layers are controlled by semidiurnal tide. The low salinity water less than 22 psu was observed along the northern part during the early observation period while southerly wind prevails. The less saline water moves westward and finally leaves the estuary by easterly wind early on the second day. We can divide the vertical structure into four layers by hydrography and current structure. Mean velocity structure shows that relatively less saline waters at the surface and the middle layer move seaward, and the waters at the upper and the bottom layers move landward. It is thought that the intermittent discharge of river water from the sea dyke makes vertical structure of four layers.

  • Radiostrontium passes the placental barrier in pregnant rodents very well. Chitosan, a natural nontoxic chelator, was reported to reduce whole body retention of radiostrontium in mice. The aim of the present study was to evaluate water soluble chitosan as a blocking agent of transplacental transfer of radiostrontium in pregnant mice. Twenty pregnant mice were divided into four groups: control and three groups of chitosan treatment (groups 1 to 3). Sr-85(15KBq in 0.2ml saline) was subcutaneously injected into pregnant mice at the 17th day of pregnancy. In control mice, 0.2ml saline was given 5 hours after the injection of Sr-85. In group 1, 1% water soluble chitosan was given subcutanously for two days, twice daily after the injection of Sr-85. In group 2, 10% water soluble chitosan was given orally for 15 days before conception. In group 3, 0.3% water soluble chitosan was injected intravenously for 15 days, once daily before conception. Gamma counting of newborns were done at days 0, 2 and 7 after their births. Whole body retention of Sr-85 in newborns of control mice at days 0, 2, 7 were $3.1{\pm}0.3%,\;2.9{\pm}0.3%,\;2.8{\pm}0.3%$ respectively. In experimental groups, whole body retention of Sr-85 was significantly lower than that of control (p<0.01) and no statistical difference was noted between them. In group 1, the values were $2.1{\pm}0.3%,\;1.4{\pm}0.1%,\;1.4{\pm}0.1%$, respectively. In group 3, they were $2.1{\pm}0.2%,\;1.7{\pm}0.2%,\;1.6{\pm}0.2%$, respectively. In conclusion, the water soluble chitosan reduced transplacental contamination of radiostrontium in pregnant mice.
