  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of carrying postures and weight of load carried one time on a worker when carrying heavy loads. Six male students participated in this study to perform a manual materials carrying task as subjects. To make comparison of work loads with physical work capacity, maximal oxygen uptake measurement tests were performed with submaximal test. The average oxygen consumption for the tasks of this study was 27.59~31.93% $VO_2$max. The results showed that the weight of load carried one time affects on working heart rate and oxygen consumption($VO_2$). It was found that the workload was significantly lower when handling a 20kg load at a frequency rate of 3times/min than when handling a 40kg load at a frequency rate of 1.5 times/min. There was no difference between carrying postures. It is concluded from the results of this study that the workload can be reduced by controlling conditions of a manual materials handling task.

  • Low back pain has been known as the most frequent musuculoskeletal disorders in modern industrial society and cost by low back pain is increasing mon and more. The asymmetric lifting has been identified as a major risk factor of low back pain. In this study, the muscle activity and muscle exertion level during asymmetric load handling (without trunk flexion) was estimated. The results of normalized MVC measurement were decreased about 16%, 24%, 34% respectively as the asymmetric angle was $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$. From the results of EMG measurement contralateral muscles were more active than ipsilateral muscles. RMSEMG values of right erector spinae muscles were decreased as the work posture went to 90$^{\circ}$ and those of left erector spinae muscles were increased until the asymmetric angle was 40$^{\circ}$ but decreased continually over 40$^{\circ}$. And for seven of subjects, activities of left and right latissimus dorsi muscles were maintained constantly, while for remainer, those were irregular.

  • Ship-handling simulation system has been used for maritime traffic safety assessment for harbor and fairway. There exist various environmental conditions under which ship may navigate along a fairway or in harbor. Due to the time and budget limitations, however, ship-handling simulations are usually carried out for very limited number of environmental conditions. In this paper, statistical method for effective and systematic determination of real time simulation conditions is suggested and applied to the maritime traffic safety assessment problems. In the empirical study, the principal component analysis method and the concept of empirical cumulative distribution function are suggested to estimate synthetic navigational difficulty and to select simulation conditions which would impose high difficulty on shiphandling.

  • Workplaces handling hazardous chemicals are scattered, because of old-aging facilities are have been operating for more than 20 years, there is still has the risk of an accident. Advanced countries including the UN and strengthen regulation of chemicals, but the frequent leak accidents have become a big issue socially. In the case of subsequent domestic accidental chemical accident, the government and related departments for the overall prevention, preparedness, response system has been checked and improved. In this study, improvements of the related system and the plan of safety management for on the prevention of accidents and the initial response were suggested throughout the analysis of problems on the actual condition of safety management and such as standard of the related systems for handling, management for occurring the main cause of the leak and chemical accidents from hazardous chemicals handling in the workplace.

  • Vessel traffic safety management means the managerial technical measures for improving the marine traffic safety in general terms. The main flow of vessel traffic safety management is that: 1) Traffic Survey, 2) Replay by Marine Traffic Flow Simulation, 3) Quantitative Assessment, 4) Policy Alternatives, 5) Prediction·Verification. In the management of vessel traffic safety, it is most important to establish assessment models that can numerically estimate the current safety level and quantitatively predict the correlation between the measures to be taken and the improvement of safety and the reduction of ship handling difficulties imposed on mariners. In this paper, the replay model for traffic flow simulation was made using marine traffic survey data, and the present traffic situation became replay in the computer. An attempt was made to rate the current safety of ports and waterways by applying the Environmental Stress model. And, as a countermeasure for traffic management, by taking of, the promotion of total traffic congestion in early morning rush hour, the correlation between traffic control rate and the reduction in ship handling difficulties imposed on mariners was predicted quantitatively.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the dental hygienist's perception of dental materials and to understand the safety status of harmful chemicals. The study was conducted from January to February 2015 for 250 dental hygienists working in Gwangju Metropolitan City. as a result, the degree of recognition of MSDS for dental materials was higher with age (P <0.05) and higher in dental hygienist (P <0.001) working at dental hospital. (P <0.001), and the factors affecting the perception of first aid treatment were positively correlated with experience of hazard education (P <0.001). Therefore, by understanding the MSDS awareness of dental materials by dental hygienists and the safety situation in the handling of hazardous chemical substances, we provide basic data for establishing proper recognition of safety in the handling of harmful chemical substances and developing educational programs to prevent accidents.

  • Small and medium industry facility handling hazardous chemicals was inspected and summarized. The inspection results were summarized in four categories such as hazards to process, storage, workers, and the others. The result was applied to further improvement of the facility. In conclusion, the industry intented to satisfy minimum requirement of regulation and they do not pay attention to keep maintaining the facility in integrity condition.

  • For the safe handling of acetone, the flash point, the explosion limit at $25^{\circ}C$ and the temperature dependence of the explosion limits were investigated. And the AIT for acetone were experimented. By using the literatures data, the lower and upper explosion limits of acetone recommended 2.5 vol% and 13.0 vol%, respectively. In this study, the lower flash points of acetone recommended $-20^{\circ}C$. This study was determined relationship between the AITs and the ignition delay times by using ASTM E659-78 apparatus for acetone, and the experimental AIT of acetone was $565^{\circ}C$. The new equations for predicting the temperature dependence of the explosion limits of acetone is proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with the literature data.

  • For the safe handling of n-hexane, the explosion limit at $25^{\circ}C$, the temperature dependence of the explosion limits and the lower flash point were investigated. And AITs(auto-ignition temperatures) by ignition delay time for n-hexane were experimented. By using the literatures data, the lower and upper explosion limits of n-hexane recommended 1.0 Vol% and 8.0 Vol%, respectively. In this study, the lower flash points of n-hexane recommended $-23^{\circ}C$. This study measured relationship between the AITs and the ignition delay times by using ASTM E659-78 apparatus for n-hexane, and the experimental AIT of n-hexane was $240^{\circ}C$. The new equations for predicting the temperature dependence of the explosion limits of n-hexane is proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with the literature data.

  • The radiation dosage of nuclear fuel handling machine of PHWR type NPP during normal operation is measured using semiconductor detectors. In order to predict and mitigate the damage of main components in fuel handling machine, caused by high irradiation, the radiation dosage exerted to the components by neutron and gamma ray is measured independently during one time of the fuel exchange, which is used far estimating the radiation dosage for one year. This result can guarantee the safety and economical efficiency for determining the replacement time of the high cost main components in fuel handling machine.
