  • This research is conducted on temporary street furniture, which is one of the significant factors that comprise the street landscape in modem cities. The primary purpose of this research is to present the guidance on direction of planning by examining the design and installation types of construction and screen fences usually established at construction sites for buildings, roads, parks and etc. The results are as follows: 1. The construction and screen fences at construction sites of urban areas used to be a mere tentative facility to prevent noise and safety accidents but have now incremented their roles to serve not only as a functional but also as an aesthetic element with a city view and harmonization with other elements taken into consideration. In particular, it is noticeable that, based on its unique feature of tentativeness, its role has developed to serve as street furniture that adds variability to the modem city. 2. There are two different types of screen fences: blackout type and transparent type. The transparent screen turns out to be used a lot at the construction site of building a skyscraper or differentiated building in downtown city area or in places where there are buildings of similar types and shapes located along the street in the vicinity of the construction site. 3. The actual cases of adopting the tentative construction and screen fences all at the same time as a single unit have been found in historically and culturally significant architectures with the screen design used to demonstrate the view after completion of construction or the characteristics of the architecture.

  • Rockfall Protection fence is one of the most common rockfall Protection methods in Korea. If rockfall protection fences are required along the road or railway, their location, height and capacity, in terms of the maximum kinetic energy that they can absorb, should be specified. Within this paper, the best practice of rockfall barrier is introduced. Modern rockfall simulations as a means to define risks, protection requirements, dynamic loading and height of potential structures and selection of appropriate placement is presented. Technical possibilities of rockfall barriers and their actual limits are presented. Safety concepts based on probabilistic approaches are proposed. Recent studies peformed in other countries show that Flexible Barriers are also a feasible system to stop and retain debris flows. Finally an outlook onto further development is given.

  • In this paper, we propose an autonomous feeding robot and its obstacle classification system using ultrasonic sensors to secure the driving safety of the robot and efficient feeding operation. The developed feeding robot is verified by operation experiments in a cattle shed. In the proposed classification algorithm, not only the maximum amplitude of the ultrasonic echo signal but also two gradients of the signal and the variation of amplitude are considered as the feature parameters for object classification. The experimental results show the efficiency of the proposed classification method based on the Support Vector Machine, which is able to classify objects or obstacles such as a human, a cow, a fence and a wall.

  • This paper describes a new progressive embedded Internet Protocol(IP) camera available for real-time image transmission. It was applied for ship safety and security on seashore area. The functions of developed embedded system was more effective and excellent than conventional systems. Nowadays, each nation has established harbor security systems to jump up their ports to international port. Recently Incheon port has tried to change man security into center security system used by image security system. The security system of Incheon port has some advantages like effectivity of security system and reduction of manpower and cost, installed by image security system with CCTV cameras at the entrance gate and around the fence. Thus in this paper, we have designed and implemented a Personal Digital Assistants(PDA) based Image Surveillance System for Harbor Security using IP Camera under ubiquitous environment. This system has big advantages which are more effective in an emergency and low cost and small manpower than conventional systems.

  • This paper presents the development of laser scanner based static obstacle detection algorithm for vehicle localization on lane lost section. On urban autonomous driving, vehicle localization is based on lane information, GPS and digital map is required to ensure. However, in actual urban roads, the lane data may not come in due to traffic jams, intersections, weather conditions, faint lanes and so on. For lane lost section, lane based localization is limited or impossible. The proposed algorithm is designed to determine the lane existence by using reliability of front vision data and can be utilized on lane lost section. For the localization, the laser scanner is used to distinguish the static object through estimation and fusion process based on the speed information on radar data. Then, the laser scanner data are clustered to determine if the object is a static obstacle such as a fence, pole, curb and traffic light. The road boundary is extracted and localization is performed to determine the location of the ego vehicle by comparing with digital map by detection algorithm. It is shown that the localization using the proposed algorithm can contribute effectively to safe autonomous driving.

  • This paper presents a program for protecting vehicles against side winds on highways. The present study consists of three processes. The first one involves giving a guideline for evaluating driving safety in high winds. The second one involves making a guideline for determining the necessity of wind protection system for a certain road area. A reasonable procedure is suggested based on the probability model of wind data on weather stations and the correction of local topographical conditions. The third one involves design of wind barriers. Both CFD analyses and wind tunnel tests were performed to find the proper type of wind barrier considering vehicle controllability, structural safety, economical efficiency as well as driver's visibility. Performance of the designed wind fences was verified from field tests. The performance of the four different types of wind barrier installed at the elevated bridge were tested and some of the results were provided.

  • The rate of traffic accidents that occurred in Korea last year is 10 out of every 100,000 people, ranking it 6th among the 35 OECD member countries. The accident rate of children with disabilities and elderly people is also high. The purpose of this study is to introduce traffic safety facilities which have been developed for the reduction of traffic accidents in non-urban areas in Korea through an analysis of the related literature, the accident factors using traffic accident analysis system data and traffic accident characteristics. Traffic safety integrated facilities for ICT-based pedestrian crossings are subject to cross-sectional coverage of child protection zones. The smart safety fence prevents vehicles from parking illegally and informs pedestrians that there is an access vehicle on the pedestrian crossing. The smart bump is designed to warn drivers who are not aware of the pedestrians. In order to standardize the appropriate form and size of the traffic safety facilities for pedestrian crossings, we constructed a standard model for each type, considering the road function, press classification, power, lane number, geometric form, etc. As a result, the rate of traffic accidents involving vulnerable people was reduced. In addition, it is anticipated that the maintenance costs will be reduced by the use of a solar power supply and their compatibility with the existing installed safety fences.

  • Robot related injuries in industrial accidents statistics during 2008~2010 have accounted for a total of 109 cases equivalent to 30~40 cases for each of those years. The number of injured compared to the dissemination of industrial robots(51,302 units/2004) can be regarded as quite low. However, the fatal injuries sustained by 7 (6.4%) out of 109 cases paints the stark reality of robot-related accident fatalities. It is a sad probability that as the automation process expands its use of industrial robots which have increased significantly in demand, the incidence of workplace accidents will also increase. Therefore, the incidence of accidents throughout the period of 2008~2010 has been analysed to prevent the injuries due to the increased use of industrial robots. In the analysis, the injuries occurred during the industrial robot operation accounted for 45.9% of the entire accidents. Thus, we examined the present status of the industrial robot operation to analyze the root cause of accidents occurred in our studied time period. We looked at a total of 469 workplaces. 456 workplaces responded in the year 2009 and survey studies were implemented at 13 of the 29 workplaces where work injuries were sustained in the year 2010. Even where protective measures and interlock devices were in place, our studies indicated that workers could access the robot area to perform the tasks in 188 sites(40.1%). Also, the 143 sites(30.5%) had control measures and equipment located in the safety fence. In addition, the robots found at 164 sites(35.0%) could be restarted without additional restarting operation. These three causes accounted for most of the workplace injuries during the industrial robot operations. Futhermore, we confirmed the fact that the protective measures of the current safety regulations were not strictly enforced. Based upon our studies and the investigation of the present status of the industrial robot operation, higher standards in training and supervision of workers in the robot operation must quickly be met in order to prevent these industrial injuries.

  • The purpose of this research was to analyze scolding experiences of three parents with children of same gender. For this research, a narrative inquiry was used as the research method. The research results showed that scolding toward children and scolding from parents resembled each other while the experiences of the three parents regarding scolding were revealed as the following four larger themes and three smaller themes: mimicking the scolding of their parents (taking on the parental role toward the projected, internal self of the past, acceptance of familiarity, providing a safety fence to the children), transforming the scolding of their parents, projecting the unsolved task of parenting to children, beginning to transform and evolve scolding, and cautious practice within daily living. In the discussion, methods for transforming and evolving scolding based on experiences of the three parents regarding scolding were studied, while research on parents scolding children with differing genders and how positive experience such as praising, encouragement, and support, from parents reemerged within children are suggested.
