  • Flux concentrated permanent magnet transverse flux machines, FCPM-TFMs, with segmented stators require multi-turn concentric saddle coils to replace the ring coils, which are normally utilized in conventional layeredphase TFM constructions. In this paper, we investigate the influence of the shape of saddle phase windings and their parameter variations on the output torque productivity. Non-meshed coils evaluated via a finite element method (FEM) to examine the effect of the coil's location within one phase on machine performance. By using meshed coils, the analysis can be extended to inspect the distributions of magnetic field strength as well as current density in the coils. Throughout the study, the influence of design parameters on the output torque for two stator structures, i.e., a laminated and soft magnetic composite (SMC), are evaluated.

  • Flexible risers are usually used as conveying systems to bring ocean resources from sea bed up to onshore. Under ocean environments, risers need to bear complex loads and it is crucial to comprehensively examine riser's configurations and to analyze structural dynamic performances under excitation of bottom vehicle motions, to guarantee structural safe operation and required service lives. In this study, considering a saddle-shaped riser, the influences of some important design parameters, including installation position of buoyancy modules, buoyancy ratio and motion of mining vehicle, on riser's configuration and response are carefully examined. Through our FEM simulations, the spatial distributions of structural tensions and curvatures along of riser length, under different configurations, are compared. Then, the impacts of mining vehicle motion on riser dynamic response are discussed, and structural tolerance performance is assessed. The results show that modules installation position and buoyancy ratio have significant impacts on riser configurations. And, an appropriate riser configuration is obtained through comprehensive analysis on the modules positions and buoyancy ratios. Under this proposed configuration, the structural tension and curvature could moderately change with buoyancy modules and bottom-end conditions, in other words, the proposed saddle-shaped riser has a good tolerance performance to various load excitations.

  • Flow and scalar dispersion around Cheomseongdae are numerically investigated using a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model with the renormalization group (RNG) $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence closure scheme. Cheomseongdae is an ancient astronomical observatory in Gyeongju, Korea, and is chosen as a model obstacle because of its unique shape, that is, a cylinder-shaped architectural structure with its radius varying with height. An interesting feature found is a mid-height saddle point behind Cheomseongdae. Different obstacle shapes and corresponding flow convergences help to explain the presence of the saddle point. The predicted size of recirculation zone formed behind Cheomseongdae increases with increasing ambient wind speed and decreases with increasing ambient turbulence intensity. The relative roles of inertial and eddy forces in producing cavity flow zones around an obstacle are conceptually presented. An increase in inertial force promotes flow separation. Consequently, cavity flow zones around the obstacle expand and flow reattachment occurs farther downwind. An increase in eddy force weakens flow separation by mixing momentum there. This results in the contraction of cavity flow zones and flow reattachment occurs less far downwind. An increase in ambient wind speed lowers predicted scalar concentration. An increase in ambient turbulence intensity lowers predicted maximum scalar concentration and acts to distribute scalars evenly.

  • Hull plate consists of various types of curved plates and there also exists corresponding processing methods. Typically, curved plates can be divided into convex type and saddle type. Large amount of research has been conducted mainly focusing on application of processing method of convex type, saddle type and hybrid type, but research on determination and processing method application of the most difficult S-shaped curved plate that has inflection lines has not been carried out yet. In this paper, as the fundamental research of appropriate processing method application, a calculation method is proposed to calculate inflection lines on curved plates. In order to calculate inflection lines, normal curvature and information of fabricated curved plates should be utilized. We compare the workability of the fabrication for hull plate using inflection line.

  • The specially-shaped Polycrystalline Diamond Compact (PDC) cutter is widely used in drill bit design due to its advantages of high rock cutting efficiency, strong impact resistance and long service life in hard and abrasive formation drilling. A detailed understanding of rock cutting behavior of worn specially-shaped PDC cutter is essential to improve the drilling efficiency and decrease the drilling costs. In this paper, the theoretical models of two new principles (loading performance (LP) and cutting performance (CP)) are derived for evaluating the cutting process of worn specially-shaped cutter, the theoretical models consider the factors, such as cutter geometry, aggressiveness, stress state, working life, and rock cutting efficiency. Besides, the numerical model of heterogeneous granite is developed using finite element method combined with Voronoi tessellation, the LP and CP of 12 kinds of worn specially-shaped PDC (SPDC) cutters are analyzed. The results found that the mechanical specific energy (MSE) of worn cutters first increase and then decrease with increasing the cutting depth, and the MSE increase with the increase of back rake angle except for Conical cutter and Wedge-shaped cutter. From the perspective of CP, the worn PDC cutters are more suitable for the smaller cutting depths, and the back rake angle has little effect on the CP of the specially-shaped worn PDC cutters. Conical cutter, Saddle-shaped cutter and Ellipse-shaped cutter have the highest CP value, while Rhombus-shaped cutter, Convex cutter and Wedge-shaped cutter have the lowest value in selecting cutters. This research leads to an enhanced understanding of rock-breaking mechanisms of worn SPDC cutters, and provides the basis to select of specially-shaped PDC cutters for the specific target formation.

  • Architectural fabrics membranes have not only the structural performance but also act as an efficient cladding to cover large areas. Because of the direct relationship between form and force distribution in tension membrane structures, form-finding procedure is an important issue. Ideally, once the optimal form is found, a uniform pre-stressing is applied to the fabric which takes the form of a minimal surface. The force density method is one of the most efficient computational form-finding techniques to solve the initial equilibrium equations. In this method, the force density ratios of the borders to the membrane is the main parameter for shape-finding. In fact, the shape is evolved and improved with the help of the stress state that is combined with the desired boundary conditions. This paper is evaluated the optimum amount of this ratio considering the curvature of the flexible boarders for structural configurations, i.e., hypar and conic membranes. Results of this study can be used (in the absence of the guidelines) for the fast and optimal design of fabric structures.

  • In this study, we investigated the ion energy distributions in a chlorine based inductively coupled plasma by quadrupole mass spectrometer with an electrostatic ion energy analyzer. Ion energy distributions are presented for various plasma parameters such as $BCl_3/Ar$ gas mixing ratio, RF power, and process pressure. As the $BCl_3/Ar$ gas mixing ratio and process pressure decreases, and RF power increases, the saddle-shaped structures is enhanced. The reason is that there are ionized energy difference between $BCl_3$ and Ar, change of plasma potential, alteration of mean free path. and variety of ion collision in the sheath.

  • A quadrature RF coil has been developed for 0.3 Tesla permanent MRI systems. The quadrature RF coil is composed of a solenoid coil and a saddle shaped coil. To minimize the coupling ratio between the two coils, each coil is serially connected to a small extra loop. and the small loops are magnetically coupled to each other. By deliberately adjusting relative positions of the small loops, we have decreased the coupling ratio up to -30dB.

  • The time-dependent tracking inversion method is studied to extract the potential energy surface of the electronic excited state in the photodissociation of triatomic molecules. Based on the relay of the regularized inversion procedure and time-dependent wave packet propagation, the algorithm extracts the underlying potential energy surface piece by piece by tracking the time-dependent data, which can be synthesized from Raman excitation profiles. We have demonstrated the algorithm to extract the potential energy surface of electronic excited state for NO2 molecule where the wave packet split on a saddle-shaped surface. Finally, we describe the merits of the time-dependent tracking inversion method compared with the time-independent inversion method and discussed several extensions of the algorithm.
