  • Burkitt's lymphoma is a malignant tumor that commonly occurs in the jaws of children of Central Africa. It originates from the lymphatic tissue, and it shows rapid growth. Clinically, it is commonly found in children between age of 3 and 8. When it is found in the jaw, facial swelling, mobility of deciduous teeth, and early eruption of posterior teeth can also be found. Upon radiographic examination, radiolucent lesions with irregular border can be observed. Histologically, macrophage can be seen among tumor cells, and this special pattern is called "starry-sky" appearance. In this case, 3 year-old male patient came to our hospital with left facial swelling and severe mobility of deciduous molars. He was diagnosed as Burkitt's lymphoma based on clinical, radiographic, and histologic examination. He is being treated with chemotherapy and progress seems promising.

  • Background: Leukemia and lymphoma demonstrate significantly incidence rates throughout the world and particularly in Iran they cause serious mortality and diagnosis and treatment expenditures for both families and the health system. Combined they account for about 11 percent of cancers in Mazandaran province, ranking number 2 in prevalent cancers. The purpose of this study was to provide a first general and specific description of leukemia and lymphoma in Mazandaran province. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive retrospective study, entire patient's data were reviewed which had confirmed diagnosis of leukemia and lymphoma with valid laboratory or pathology reports in the period 2001-2008. The data were collected by Babol health research site related to Tehran University of Medical Science. Incidence rates based on age groups, gender, city of residence and type of malignancy were calculated and analyzed. Results: In Mazandaran province, 1,146 cases of leukemia and lymphoma were encountered, 5.9 in 100,000 persons on average annually. The highest incidence rates were obtained at age of 70 or above (26.4) and the lowest at age of 0-9 (2.3).The incidence rates in males and females were 7.1 and 4.8 respectively with a ratio of 1.5. The highest incidence rate was in Babol (7.3) and the lowest was calculated in Neka and Tonekabon equally (1.5). According to the type of malignancy, non Hodgkin lymphoma, with 2.5/100,000 have the most incidence rate and myeloid leukemia with 1.8 had the lowest. Conclusions: The obtained findings indicate clear differences in incidence rates based on age, gender, residence, and type of malignancy. Therefore it's suggested that in addition to promote data collecting programs, research projects should be programmed to define leukemia and lymphoma risk factors in this province.

  • The total alkaloid fraction of the methanolic extract of Solanum pseudocapsicum unripe fruits was tested for its in-vivo anticancer activity against Dalton's Lymphoma Ascites model in mice. The total alkaloid fraction at 5.0 and 10.0 mg/kg body weight showed significant increase in the mean survival time and the percentage increase in the life span of tumor bearing mice. The increase in the body weight was found to be less than that of the control. However, the treatment at 20 mg/ kg body weight was found to be toxic and showed a decrease in the mean survival time, and body weight when compared to control mice. The antitumor activity observed may be due to the cytotoxic activity of the total alkaloid fraction.

  • A spayed female, 8-year-old, maltese, weighing 1.84 kg with a history of acute severe vomiting, anorexia, depression for 2 day was referred. An abdominal mass was palpated with abdominal pain on physical examination. Radiographic findings included two soft tissue density masses in the mid-abdominal cavity and gas dilated colon. Ultrasonographs showed one heterogeneous hypoechoic round mass including intestinal wall. There were loss of normal wall layering and motility and absence of internal lumen of the intestinal wall. And another heterogeneous hyperechoic mass was identified to the medial side of the intestinal mass. Based on clinical signs, image findings, and the result of fine needle aspiration, intestinal obstruction due to alimentary lymphoma was diagnosed. On surgery, a cecal lymphoma and mesenteric lymphadenopathy were confirmed and the cecal mass was resected.

  • Lymphomas of the nasal sinuses are relatively uncommon and represent less than 1% of all head and neck malignancies. Most common symptoms are nasal obstruction, epistaxis, rhinorrhea. We report a case of primary extranodal diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in nasal sinuses accompanying with exophthalmos. A 70-year-old male patient was referred to our hospital with exophthalmos and severe septal deviation. We conducted endoscopic biopsy with septoplasty and biopsy result was diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. He received chemotherapy(R-CHOP) and radiotherapy. At follow-up, he remained free of disease.

  • Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most prevalent type of thyroid cancer. In contrast, thyroid lymphoma is a very rare disease. Concurrent onset of both is very rare in the thyroid gland. Ultrasound (US)-guided Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is a useful diagnostic tool, but occasionally pathology results may change after the surgery. A 56 years old woman visited with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and nodule on the thyroid gland isthmus on US exam. US-guided FNA was performed at thyroid nodule and diagnosed as PTC. The patient underwent total thyroidectomy. The pathological findings revealed a mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma accompanied with PTC. Authors report this unusual case with a review of literature.

  • A 21-year-old female Halla Horse weighing 248 kg was referred to the Jeju National University Equine Hospital with the chief complaint of anorexia accompanied by general weakness and depression for the previous three days suspected to be related to colic. Extensive diagnostic tests were performed for the following six days, including complete blood count (CBC), serum chemistry, gastroscopy, x-rays, and ultrasound imaging. The signalment, history, symptoms, and test results strongly suggested a chronic intestinal inflammatory disease with or without an alimentary tumor; hence, an exploratory laparotomy was performed. Almost the entire small intestine wall was severely thickened with diffuse ecchymosis on the serosa and protruded nodules on the mucosa. A presumptive diagnosis of an intestinal tumor was made, and the patient was euthanized, considering the patient's welfare with poor prognosis and low expectancy. A massive part of the small intestine was collected and submitted for macroscopic and microscopic pathology evaluations. The pathologic examination, including immunohistochemistry (IHC), indicated equine intestinal lymphoma showing strong positivity for T cell marker. This report describes the clinical signs, diagnosis and pathological features of intestinal lymphoma in a Halla Horse in detail.

  • From 1982 to 1991, sixteen Patients with primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the central nervous system(CNS) were seen at Kyung Hee University Hospital. The most common subtypes were large, noncleaved cell lymphoma and immunoblastic lymphoma of B cells. Lesions most commonly involved were the parietal lobes and/or deep nuclei. Positive cerebrospinal fluid cytology was rare at initial presentation. Sixteen patients were treated with surgical biopsy or resection followed by whole brain radiotherapy at a median dose of 40 Gy(range=30-50 Gy) with variable boost doses. Of 16 patients who underwent surgery and postoperative radiotherapy, fourteen patients died between 2 and 49 months following treatment, and two are alive with no evidence of disease at 8 and 22 months. The 1-and 2-year survival rates were 55.6$ \% $ and 34.7$ \% $, respectively with 12 months of median survival. Patterns of failure were analyzed in eleven patients of total 16 patients. Failure at the original site of involvement was uncommon after radiotherapy treatment. In contrast, failure in the brain at sites other than those originally invovled was common in spite of the use of whole brain irradiation. Failure occurred in the brain 11/16(68.7$ \% $), in spinal axis 4/16(25.0$ \% $). The age, sex, location of involvement within CNS, numbers of lesion, or radiation dose did not influence on survival. The authors conclude that Primary CNS lymphoma is a locally aggressive disease that is poorly controlled with conventional radiation therapy. The limitation of current therapy for this disease are discussed, and certain promising modality should be made in regarding the management of future patients with this disease.

  • The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the effect of A.nilotica extract against Dalton's ascitic lymphoma (DAL) induced solid and ascitic tumors in BALB/c mice. Experimental animals received A.nilotica extract (10 mg/kg.bw) intraperitoneally for 10 and 14 consecutive days before induction of solid and ascitic tumors, respectively. Treatment with A.nilotica extract significantly decreased the development of tumor and percentage increase in body weight when compared to DAL induced solid tumor control group, also increasing the life span, restoring the total white blood cell count and hemoglobin content and significantly decreasing the levels of serum aspartate transaminase (SGPT), alanine transaminase (SGOT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) and nitric oxide (NO) when compared to DAL induced ascitic tumor controls. The treatment also reduced significantly the cellular glutathione (GSH) and nitric oxide levels in treated animals. Histopathological studies also confirmed protective influence. The outcome of the present work indicates that A.nilotica extract could be used as natural anticancer agent for human health.

  • Castleman's disease (CD) is an uncommon lymphoproliferative disorder. The disease entity is classified into 2 clinical subtypes, unicentric and multicentric type. Prevalence of lymphoid malignancy in multicentric CD (MCD) is very low. In this case, we report a case of 77 years old woman who developed high fever and swelling in both side of her neck. Neck lymph node biopsy revealed plasma cell hyperplasia. Patient's symptom was subsided after treatment with Dexamethasone. Three months later, multiple lymph node enlargement was developed in abdomen and neck area again. Repeated neck lymph node biopsy confirmed diffuse large B cell lymphoma. The patient started chemotherapy.
