  • Our previous studies have demonstrated the inadequate nutritional status of Vietnamese female marriage immigrants in Korea. Major possible reasons include food insecurity due to economic problems as well as a lack of adjustment to unfamiliar Korean foods and limited access to Vietnamese foods; however, no study has investigated food insecurity among such intermarried couples. This study was performed to investigate the prevalence of food insecurity in Korean-husband-Vietnamese-wife couples and to determine whether they exhibit an intrahousehold discrepancy regarding food insecurity. A cross-sectional analysis of the Cohort of Intermarried Women in Korea study was performed with 84 intermarried couples. Among the 84 Vietnamese immigrants, 48.8% and 41.7% had food insecurity due to economic problems and a lack of foods appealing to their appetite, respectively. There was a marked discrepancy in reporting food insecurity between Vietnamese wives (22.6-38.1%) and their Korean husbands (6.0-15.5%). Vietnamese wives were five and two times more food-insecure due to economic problems and no foods appealing to their appetite, respectively, than their Korean spouses. A follow-up study is needed to investigate the causes of this discrepancy and ways of reducing food insecurity among female marriage immigrants living in low-income, rural communities.

Kyung Buk province and the branch school of Songmyun elementary school located in remote village of Goisan county. Chung Buk province. Family environment dietary intake anthropometric data and biochemical tests were examined. The results are summerized as follows: The mean balance and food diversity at lunch were significantly lower than those at breakfast and dinner. Mean daily energy and nutrient intakes were below the Korean RDA's except for intakes of niacin vitamin A and ascorbic acid Especially intake of calcium was not reached to 50% of Korean RDA's. Most of anthropometric data of subjects surveyed showed slightly higher results in summer than those in spring except for weight for height and sitting height for height. The percentage of anemic according to hematocrit criterion was not reduced during this period. however urinary urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio was improved. The conbined feeding program of brown rice flake with soy milk or cow's milk was not sufficient to support the children's growth. This study analysis is based on factors that are influenced on the prevalent conditions of dietary-intake of the urban elderly either it be for better ment of health or desire. The method of this research was based on the interview-survey with questinaire in the Seoul area. In comparison to the surveys taken of the rural society and the urban slum elderly the urban elderly standard nutritional requirements was higher. Of the standard nutritional requrieemtns the twomen's nutrition intake was higher than of the men. But still the problem of malnutrition existed in the urban elderly both men and women at the probability nutritional deficienty rate higher than 30%. The food intake frequency factors which might influence the condition of nutritional intake was significant more than condition of eating. Another important factors of the conditions of nutritioal intake of the urban elderly are one's self-consciousness of health and degree of one's will change . In healthy case of the aged, their will was almost maintained and hand -grip strength was high when they had regular meal with their family . For elderl with the lower academic career and the one with more satisfactory to his meal, their wills didn't change before or after retirement. The objectiveness of this survey is to convince the elderly that the problems of nutritional deficiency can only be solved by reeducation and to improve their nutritional diet to have the enjoyments of a healtheir elderly life.

  • Peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) belongs to a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is widely used in food, cosmetics and medicines. This study was carried to investigate the variation of essential oil content and its composition during callus subculture of M. piperita. For callus induction from the leaf explant of peppermint, the basal medium was supplemented with various concentrations of 2, 4-D. The best callus induction rate (93%) of M. piperita. was obtained in MS medium containing 2 mg/l 2, 4-D. The induced peppermint callus maintained on Lin-Staba medium were studied during a period of 20th subcultures for the stability of essential oil production. Growth rates of peppermint callus increased during prolonged subculture. However, there was a progressive decrease of essential oil content and unstability of monoterpene productions when callus cultures were serially subcultured.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between marital satisfaction and the quality of life for women and men who live in a rural area in Korea through an international marriage. Methods: A descriptive correlational research design was used. Ninety-one women and 56 men were surveyed from May 1st., 2007 to April 6th., 2008. Data were analyzed by t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and Fisher's exact test. Two types of questionnaires were used: Marital satisfaction scale (MSS) and WHO quality of life-brief (WHOQOL-BREF). Result: There is a gap between men's age and women's in the average of their marriage ; 37 vs 24. In addition, men's marital satisfaction was much higher than women's (t =2.16, p=.032) and quality of life was also higher than women's (t=-0.85, p=.005). According to this survey, therefore, it has been shown that there is a positive correlation between marital satisfaction and the quality of life (r =.435, p<.001). Conclusion: In order to improve the quality of life, marital satisfaction should be promoted by practical family nursing programs and it is necessary for the internationally married women to be continuously provided with language education and cultural awareness.

The questionnaire was used for the survey. The subjects were 200 mother-child (total of 400) randomly chosen from 4 elementary schools in Seoul. Data were analyzed by frequencies, percentages, averages, standard deviations, Pearson's correlation coefficients, t-tests and one-way ANOVA's using the SPSS/PC+ program. The results of this study were summarized as follows : The correlation between income in their home and their children's academic achievement did not analyze because of the omitting record in their questionnaire. The relations between the patterns of mother's child-rearing and children's academic achievement by children's sex and by grade were examined. But in this study, these relations scarcely have significant differences between the children's academic achievement and their mothers' child-rearing pattern except between being significant reject-sanctions type of mothers' child-rearing and the children's academic achievement. However, the child-rearing patterns of mothers which children and their mothers think were similar, then the high correlations were found between their patterns.

  • Background: A school-based smoke free home (SFH) program is useful in empowering the mother and child to reduce secondhand smoke exposure but the effects of pretesting on knowledge and attitude has been largely ignored. We aimed to test whether such a program can be effective in Southern Thailand with an additional assessment of the net effect of the pretest. Materials and Methods: A Solomon four-group design was used. Twelve rural primary schools were assigned to one of the four conditions (each with 3 schools): intervention with and without a pretest, control with and without the same pretest. The intervention was performed in the classroom and home over a period of 1 month. Outcomes were assessed at baseline and 3 months after the intervention on whether the home was smoke free and related knowledge and attitude. Results: The intervention could lead to a smoke-free home without statistical significance. Attitude, knowledge and self-confidence on creating a smoke-free home, and self-confidence in avoidance of secondhand smoke exposure and persuading smokers to not smoke in their home were significantly improved. No pretest effect was observed. Conclusions: Gain in attitude, knowledge and self-confidence among family members from the brief school-based education should be enhanced by other measures.

Five hundred and ten parents were selected randomly from schools in the city area, the rural area or the islands in Incheon Metropolitan city. 95% of parents preferred the school lunch service because nutritious food was available to the children regardless of family income or mother's occupation. Meal cost per capita was in the range of 1,000 and 1,200 won, which satisfied most parents (74%). Moreover, many parents (68.8%) were willing to pay extra money to support the school lunch program and they actually had such experiences (82.4%). More than 90% of the respondents wanted to be adviced about the menu. Subjects chose nutrition and sanitation(25%), taste (18%), and meal size (16%) as aspects of improvement in school lunches. Parents wanted to participate in serving foods, cooking, and washing dishes once (23%) or twice (31%) a year and they considered this as a good opportunity to join the school activities. 98% of parents showed very positive responses to the nutritional education provided by the school dietitian.
