  • This paper investigated the aging characteristic under long-term corona discharge on loon temperature vulcanized silicone rubber, which has been using as a protective coating material for solving the contaminant problem. The applied electrical field is 10kV/cm ac and corona discharge treatment was applied on RTV silicone rubber sheet for maximum 250 hours. With the duration of corona discharge, the diffusible low molecular weight species increased, which was determined the usage of n-hexane extraction method. In addition, the contaminant layer was formed on the treated surface, and then measured the contact angle. We investigated the relation of contact angle and diffusible low molecular weight species. It is found that scissor of main chain PDMS and side chains (CH$_3$) and the generation of LMW species were occurred by a corona discharge. The improvement of hydrophobicity rate is thought due to the increase of diffusible LMW species.

  • Carbon master batch (CMB) rubber sheets, which are stored in stacks, are difficult to separate during reuse because of the adhesion between sheets caused by the stacked weight over time. To solve this problem, in the actual rubber product manufacturing process, various anti-tacking agents (solid powder or liquid surfactants) are applied to the sheet surface. In this study, the emulsion samples of zinc (Zn)-stearate/triethanolamine (TEA)-stearate mixtures were prepared using TEA-stearate as a surfactant, prepared using an industrially manufactured Zn-stearate powder, and their basic anti-tacking properties were studied. During the process of manufacturing emulsion, a heat treatment process and an auxiliary surfactant were introduced to improve the dispersion stability. Results showed that the heat-treated sample exhibited a significant improvement in terms of sedimentation, storage stability, and anti-tacking characteristics since the Zn-stearate particles were reduced to a smaller size by the heat-treatment than that of the original Zn-stearate powder.

  • In this study, Organo-montmorillonite(MMT) was synthesized by intercalation of various amine(Octylamine, Dodecylamine, Dimethyldodecylamine, Octadecylamine) compounds into layered silicate. Natural Rubber(NR)/MMT nanocomposites were prepared by reinforcement of Organo-MMT. X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Scanning electron microscope(SEM) were employed to characterize the layer distance of Organo-MMT and the morphology of the NR/MMT nanocomposites. The structures of the synthesized Organo-MMTs were analyzed by the measurement of FT-IR. Cure characteristics, surface free energy and mechanical properties such as tensile strength, modulus and hardness of NR/MMT nanocomposites were carefully studied by contact angle meter, ODR, UTM, and hardness tester. FT-IR analysis showed a insertion of the alkyl and amine chains into the interlayers of the MMT. It was shown that the cure time of the organo-MMT was more decreased than that of $Na^+$-MMT. Surface free energy and tensile strength of the NR/DDA-MMT nanocomposite were the highest. NR/ODA-MMT nanocomposite was the highest in hardness.

  • Poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) tire cord has relatively lower adhesion properties caused by limited reacting sites. In order to improve the adhesion force between PET tire cord and rubber, an additional process to activate surface of PET has been employed. Atmospheric plasma was used to substitute the chemical finishing process of PET tire cord as a green dipping process. Contact angle was measured to confirm surface change of PET after plasma treatment. The treated PET tire cords with/without resorcinol-formaldehyde-latex(RFL) and unvulcanized rubber were vulcanized in a testing mold at $160^{\circ}C$. After atmospheric plasma treatment of PET tire cord, adhesion force was somewhat increased under some conditions.

  • Polybutadiene rubber (BR) has been well known that its physical and chemical properties are changed when it is exposed to ultraviolet light undergoing photooxidation. In this study, photooxdiation process of BR vulcanizate was investigated using a high pressure mercury lamp used as an outdoor lighting, which has high UV radiation efficiency and reasonable cost. Discoloration and crack formation of photooxdized BR vulcanite surface were examined using an image analyzer. Change of chemical functional groups of BR vulcanite surface by photooxidation was investigated using ATR-FTIR, and variation of the crosslink density with the UV irradiation time was investigated. By increasing the UV irradiation time, the crosslink density steeply increased after a period of time and did not increase any more. Formation of hydroxyl (~OH) and carbonyl (~C=O) groups on the BR vulcanizate surface increased and the1,4-cis unit was converted to the 1,4-trans unit as the photooxidation was proceeded.

  • In this work, the influence of ozone treatment on surface properties of carbon black is investigated in terms of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angles. And their mechanical interfacial properties of the carbon black/acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) compounds are studied by the crosslink density and composite tearing energy ($G_{IIIC}$). As a result, it is found that the increasing of the ozone concentration leads to an increase of the introduction rate of oxygen-containing functional groups onto carbon black surfaces and to an increase of the surface free energy, resulting in improving both crosslink density and tearing energy ($G_{IIIC}$) of the compounds. The results can be explained by the fact that the oxygen-containing functional groups of carbon black surfaces make an increase of the degree of adhesion at interfaces between carbon blacks and rubber matrix.

  • In this work, the effect of oxygen plasma treatment of nano-scaled silica on the mechanical interfacial properties and thermal stabilities of the silica/rubber composites was investigated. The surface properties of the silica were studied in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angles. And, their mechanical interfacial properties and thermal stabilities of the composites were characterized by tearing energy ($G_{IIIC}$) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. As a result, it was found that the introduction rate of oxygen-containing polar functional groups onto the silica surfaces was increased by increasing the plasma treatment time, resulting in improving the tearing energy. Also, the thermal stabilities of the composites were increased by increasing the treatment time. These results could be explained that the polar rubber, such as acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), showed relatively a high degree of interaction with oxygen-containing functional groups of the silica surfaces in a compounding system.

  • In this work, the adsorption characteristics and mechanical interfacial properties of treated silicas by silane coupling agents, such as, ${\gamma}$-methacryloxy propyl trimethoxy silane (MPS), ${\gamma}$-glycidoxy propyl trimethoxy silane (GPS), and ${\gamma}$-mercapto propyl trimethoxy silane (MCPS), were investigated. The equilibrium spreading pressure ($pi_e$), surface free energy ($gamma_s$ s/), and specific surface area ($S_{BET}$) were studied by the BET method with $N_2$/77 K adsorption. The developments of nonpolar functional groups of the silica surfaces treated by silane coupling agents led to the increase in the $S_{BET}$, $pi_e$, and $gamma_s$, resulting in the improved tearing energy ($G_{mc}$)of the silica/rubber composites. The composites treated by MPS showed the superior mechanical interfacial properties in these systems. These results explained by changing of crystalline size, dispersion, agglomerate, and surface functional group of silica/rubber composites.

  • This study was investigated on the physical properties of synthetic rubber compounds containing silica and silane copuled silica. Surface area and pore volume of silane copuled silica appeared to be low compared with those of pure silica because silane coupling agent blocks the pore of silica surface during silanization reaction. Silica with large surface area and high structure showed the short scorch time$(t_5)$ and rapid cure rate. The silane coupled silica showed the shorter scorch time and more rapid cure rate than pure silica because of the of effect of sulfur in the silane coupling agent(Si 69), The high value of $N_2SA$ minus CTAB com-pared with surface area and structure of silica showed the high 300% modulus. Also, the surface area and structure of silica did not affected the amount of PICO loss that indicate the abrasion resistance but affected the amount of cut and chip loss.
