  • Nanocomposites were prepared through the compounding of rubber and clay. Measurements of the static and dynamic mechanical properties of different compositions over a temperature range $70-100^{\circ}C$ showed that the mechanical properties of these rubber/clay nanocomposites are superior to those of existing rubber materials. In this study, by using the parameter of the maximum Green.Lagrange strain appearing at certain locations, the relationship between fatigue life and maximum Green.Lagrange strain, and the correlations between test-piece tests and bench tests of actual rubber components are proved. In order to predict the fatigue life of rubber components at the design stage, a simple procedure of life prediction is suggested. The predicted fatigue lives of the rubber engine mounts agree fairly well with the fatigue lives determined experimentally.

  • The self-sealing rubber material for a fuel cell which has self-sealing ability, in case of fuel leakage, was studied. Cure characteristics, density, swelling, and surface morphology of foamed natural rubber were investigated with carbon black and with processing oil within the range of $10{\sim}30phr$. The rheological properties indicated that the value of $ts_2$ and the value of $Tc_{90}$ were increased with increasing a content of processing oil, while carbon black did not show a similar trend. A difference in density by foaming was decreased to one fifth scale compared to the initial value. According to the swelling test of foamed natural rubber in fuel C, isooctane and toluene, all the self-sealing action was finished in two minutes. From the SEM image for the surface of rubber compounding, a foaming by sodium bicarbonate was found to be unequal and consecutive foaming cell.

  • Linear viscoelastic properties of 11 types of EPDM and 1 type of EPM rubbers have been measured at $210^{\circ}C$, using a RDS(Rheometrics dynamic spectrometer). The data base, i.e., complex viscosity, storage modulus, loss modulus, loss tangent and relaxation spectrum of the sample should be useful for rubber blending and compounding.

  • As a part of a series of previous studies, physical properties of various portions of a tire made of NR-Syn. R bloods were studied. 1. It was found, in general, most effective for tire tread when 50 parts of HAF black was blended with NR and Syn. R with a ratio of 70/30. 2. It was found that the use of SBR 1712 has an advantage in price, easy processing and physical properties than other synthetic rubber. 3. A technical compounding of various portions of a tire has to be determined for optimum cure conditions.

  • $Al(OH)_3$ is added to the silicone rubber for improvement of its resistance against surface discharge. In this paper, four kinds of $Al(OH)_3$ were added to the SIR during compounding. SIR was deteriorated by a corona treatment. Hydrophobicity recovery rate after corona treatment and arc resistance of SIR were investigated. Hydrophobicity recovery rate of SIR was evaluated by the measurement of contact angle. Arc resistance was evaluated by measuring weight loss of SIR after arc resistance test.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish an effective way to utilize the application of EPDM-Polymer blends. First of all, the physical properties for EPDM/NR blends and compounding agents were studied. The results are shown as follows: 1. In blending, tensile strength and tear strength decreased with increase in EPDM contents. It was not effective more than the ratio of EPDM/NR is 50/50. 2. Elongation is influenced by blending, especially the ratio of EPDM/NR is 50/50. 3. It was found that both the resistance for ozone and aging were much improved after blending.

  • Using FT-IR and contact angle measurements it is observed that the chemical surface treatments on virgin carbon blacks lead to a change of the surface properties, including surface functionality and surface free energy It is found that the developments of surface functional groups on acidically and basically treated (ACB and BCB in this study, respectively) carbon blacks are largely correlated with the specific component of surface free energy of the carbon blacks. However, a significant advantage of compounding composites is gained by BCB or NCB (nonpolar chemical treatment) specimens, resulting in improving the hardness, elongation at break, and tensile strength. Particularly, it is seen that the tensile strength of the composites are greatly depended on the London dispersive component of surface free energy determined from the contact angle measurements. It is then concluded that the London dispersion component of carbon blacks plays an important role in an organic rubbers-based compounding composite system.

  • Due to the development of compounding technology, there is a considerable increase in the number of high performance rubbers in the world. Accordingly, there are rapid growing requests about high performance tires such as UHP tire and Run-flat tire. However, it is extremely difficult to investigate the friction coefficient of tire tread rubbers. An alternative solution must be developed with the reliability of high-speed linear friction test machines. The use of friction test machines can be expected to improve rubber friction researches. In this paper, we propose a new kind of high-speed linear friction test machine. We have designed and manufactured various mechanisms for friction tests. The final goals are to design and manufacture friction test machines that can investigate friction coefficients efficiently and rapidly. The performance of the proposed high-speed linear friction test machine is evaluated experimentally; however additional study should be necessary for safer and more reliable experimentation.

  • Nitrile rubber (NBR) composites were prepared using the commercially avaliable rubber compounding process with Cloisite$^{(R)}$ 10A or carbon black as fillers. When Cloisite$^{(R)}$ 10A was used as a filler in the NBR composites, the mechanical properties, oil resistant, and oxygen barrier were better than those for carbon black composites. In cure characteristics of NBR/clay composites, scorch time and curing time were reduced. It was found that alkyl ammonium ion inserted in Cloisite$^{(R)}$ 10A was considered as an accelerator of vulcanization for NBR composites.

  • SBS thermoplastic elastomers offer an inexpensive alternative to vulcanised rubbers for many undemanding applications. They are, however, particularly susceptible to attack from atmospheric ozone leading to cracking as soon as any strain is applied. In most rubber applications some strain is unavoidable. In this paper a compounding approach to protecting SBS thermoplastic rubbers against ozone is described. An explanation is offered for why a protective effect Is observed only when certain combinations of additive are used. SBS elastomers are the most affordable class of thermoplastic rubbers. To achieve finished products resistant to ozone and without compromising the light colours often demanded, recourse must be made to blending with other saturated elastomers or replacement by hydrogenated (SEBS) types. The latter is a significantly more expensive alternative. Under laboratory conditions where the rate of ozone attack is increased by several decades, unprotected SBS begins to crack within a few hours. Several different protective agents are examined here, the best of which, a cyclic enol ether, $Vulkazon^{(R)}$ AFD, can extend the resistance to any cracking to several weeks by the use of a few percent by weight of additive. The systems reported neither discolour the polymer nor stain other materials with which it may be in contact. Use of the protective systems described here could enable SBS elastomers to compete in many applications with the more expensive SEBS polymers.
