Vibratory loads imposed by the rotating blade upon the fuselage has been one of major obstacles in rotorcrafts. A new concept of rotor blade is currently developed to adopt an Active Trailing-edge Flap (ATF) to alleviate such obstacles. The flap is mounted at 65~85% spanwise location from the rotor hub. The nominal rotational speed of the blade is as high as 1,528 RPM, to match the required tip Mach number. Structural integrity is one of the important design aspects to be maintained and monitored in this special type of rotor. This is due to that many detailed components, which drive the flap, are inserted inside the rotating blade. To conduct its structural design and analysis, CAMRAD-II and the one-dimensional beam analysis are used. At the same time, three-dimensional finite element analysis are also used, such as MSC. PATRAN/NASTRAN, in order to analyze the details of the present active blade. As a result, comparable characteristics for the present rotor are predicted by both approaches.

Robust optimization or reliability-based design optimization are some of the methodologies that are employed to take into account the uncertainties of a system at the design stage. For applying such methodologies to solve industrial problems, accurate and efficient methods for estimating statistical moments and failure probability are required, and further, the results of sensitivity analysis, which is needed for searching direction during the optimization process, should also be accurate. The aim of this study is to employ the function approximation moment method into the sensitivity analysis formulation, which is expressed as an integral form, to verify the accuracy of the sensitivity results, and to solve a typical problem of reliability-based design optimization. These results are compared with those of other moment methods, and the feasibility of the function approximation moment method is verified. The sensitivity analysis formula with integral form is the efficient formulation for evaluating sensitivity because any additional function calculation is not needed provided the failure probability or statistical moments are calculated.
In this study, we performed a design and structural analysis of a blade-shaped antenna installation on the rear fuselage of a rotary wing aircraft operated by the military. When the structure is damaged while the aircraft is in operation, it is separated from the aircraft main structure and may collide with the rotor or blades to cause the aircraft to crash. Therefore, structural safety for the modified structure must be secured. The design requirement for the newly installed modified part were established, and the load condition was constructed by applying the load that may occur in the aircraft after the modification. Structure safety for the modified structure was secured by performing structure analysis. To analysis stress and deformation of aircraft structure, we developed finite element model and verified it by using hand calculation method. We confirmed the safety of the modified structure through the final structural integrity analysis.

In the present study, ground tests and CFD simulations for a ducted fan system were performed to verify the hovering performance of the ducted fan system designed by KARI rotorcraft team. Six blades were composed for the ducted fan, and target rotating speed of the fan was decided to 4,000 RPM. Collective pitch angles were considered from 20 degrees to 36 degrees. The test data were obtained by increasing the rotating speed up to 4,000 RPM in 1,000 RPM increments. The CFD simulations were considered only 4,000 RPM of rotating speed. The hovering performance was represented by thrust, power, duct thrust ratio, and FM(Figure of Merit). Reliability of the performance results was ensured through the test and simulation results, and it was found that the target performance was achieved under conditions above 31 degrees of the pitch angle.
Performance analyses were performed on a propeller developed for use in a PAV (Personal Air Vehicle) under 600 kg Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW). The actuator disc theory and CFD analyses were used to estimate the hovering time with regards to MTOW variation for a given battery weight. The interference induced power factor kint was introduced to account for the effect of flow interference between the propellers and to estimate the performance of counter-rotating propellers. The Maximum Figure of Merit (FM) value of the propeller pitch was determined and the design RPM range for the required power inversely obtained from the CFD results. Previous research indicate that the flight time of large multi-copter is limited by the available battery energy density. Similarly, the propeller pitch settings and spacing are important factors in reducing the kint value.

Artificial icing test and wind tunnel test can be performed to reduce the development period when a rotorcraft is required operation under icing situations. Artificial icing test of the KUH(Korean Utility Helicopter) was performed in advance to verify anti-icing and de-icing performance before natural icing test. Although high-precision sensor, the CCP(Cloud Combination Probe) is used to measure icing test condition parameters such as LWC(Liquid Water Content) and MVD(Median Volume Diameter), the measured values need to be verified in various methods due to the possibility of uncertainties which are the test atmosphere environment, sensor errors, and etc. The calculated LWC from the ice thickness cumulated on the fuselage of the KUH is compared to the measured value by CCP, and the results show the effective indirect method to check the test conditions.

This paper studies the simulations of active airframe vibration controls for the Sikorsky X2 helicopter with a lift-offset coaxial rotor. The 4P hub vibratory loads of the X2TD rotor are obtained from the previous work using a rotorcraft comprehensive analysis code, CAMRAD II. The finite element analysis software, MSC.NASTRAN, is used to model the structural dynamics of the X2TD airframe and to analyze the 4P vibration responses of the airframe. A simulation study using Active Vibration Control System(AVCS) with Fx-LMS algorithm to reduce the airframe vibrations is conducted. The present AVCS is modeled using MATLAB Simulink. When AVCS is applied to the X2TD airframe at 250 knots, the 4P longitudinal and vertical vibration responses at the specified airframe positions, such as the pilot seat, co-pilot seat, engine deck, and prop gearbox, are reduced by 30.65 ~ 94.12 %.

A synchropter is a type of rotorcraft in which a pair of blades inclined with each other rotates in synchronization. Removing the tail rotor enables an efficient and compact configuration similar to a coaxial-rotor helicopter. This paper describes the design and flight test results of a small synchropter to examine the suitability of a drone system for the army. The synchropter in this paper is a small vehicle with a rotor diameter of 1.4m and a weight of 7kg and was assembled based on commercial parts to examine flight characteristics effectively. The flight control system adopted Pixhawk, which is designed based on an open-architecture. The model-based design technique is applied to develop the control law of the synchropter and a new firmware embedded on the Pixhawk. Through qualitative flight tests, we analyzed the flight characteristics. As a result of the analysis, we confirmed the possibility of application as a drone system of the synchropter.

Performance and hub vibratory load analyses for a lift-offset coaxial rotor are conducted using a rotorcraft comprehensive analysis code, CAMRAD II. The lift-offset coaxial rotor is trimmed to match the total rotor thrust(lift-offset coaxial rotor's thrust) or the individual rotor thrust(upper and lower rotor thrusts, respectively) in this study. The individual rotor's lift and torque, and effective rotor lift to drag ratio for the total rotor are investigated for various advance ratios and lift-offset values. The two result sets with different trim methods are similar to each other and they are correlated well with the wind-tunnel test results. Therefore, the present study using CAMRAD II validates successfully the aeromechanics modeling and analysis techniques for the lift-offset coaxial rotor.

This numerical study conducts the modeling and the hover performance analyses of coaxial co-rotating rotor(or stacked rotor), using a rotorcraft comprehensive analysis code, CAMRAD II. The important design parameters such as the index angle and axial spacing for the coaxial co-rotating rotor are varied in this simulation study. The coaxial co-rotating rotor is trimmed using the torque value of the upper rotor of the previous coaxial counter-rotating rotor or the total thrust value of the previous coaxial counter-rotating rotor in hover. The maximum increases in the rotor thrust is 1.84% for the index angle of -10° when using the torque trim approach. In addition, the maximum decreases in the rotor power is 4.53% for the index angle of 20° with the thrust trim method. Thus, the present study shows that the hover performance of the coaxial co-rotating rotor for e-VTOL aircraft can be changed by the index angle.
