  • One stage axial type turbine is designed by mean-line analysis, streamline curvature method and blade design method using shape parameters. Tip and hub diameter of the turbine are 300mm and 206.4mm, respectively. The rotating speed is 1800RPM, and the output power is 1.4kW. The flow coefficient is 1.68 and the reaction factor at mean-line is 0.373. The number of stator and rotor of the turbine are 31 and 41, respectively. Mach number of stator exit flow near hub is 0.164. A test rig is developed for performance test to validate a developed design method. The experimental result shows that the maximum efficiency is obtained on the design point.

  • This paper describes the manufacturing processes for a flexbeam and torque tube made of composite materials, along with the procedures for testing their basic properties. A flexbeam and torque tube can be considered to be key structural components of a bearingless rotor hub system. A hinge offset effect can be realized by a large elastic deformation and twist of the flexbeam, and the blade pitch control forces are transferred by the rotation of the torque tube. The basic property tests included bending and twist tests to determine the flap stiffness, lag stiffness, and torsion stiffness of the flexbeam, torque tube, and blade, and these tests were performed prior to starting the whirl tower test. In addition, the estimated results were compared with experimental data, and the calculations were found to be a good match for the analysis results and had a similar tendency. Through these results, we could confirm that a flexbeam and torque tube made of composite materials satisfied the structural stiffness requirements.

  • A cyclocopter propelled by the cycloidal blade system, which can be described as a horizontal rotary wing, is a new concept of VTOL vehicle. In this paper, optimized structure design is carried out for the aerodynamically optimized cyclocopter rotor system. Database is obtained fer design variables such as stacking sequence (ply angles), number of plies and spar locations through MSC/NASTRAN and optimum values are determined by RSM and some other optimizing processes. For the rotor system including optimized blade and composite hub m, the maximum stress by static analysis is within the failure criteria. And the rotor system is designed for the purpose of avoiding possible dynamic instabilities by inconsistency between frequencies of rotor rotation and some low natural frequencies of rotor.

  • A 5 kWh composite flywheel rotor was designed and manufactured, and its spin test was performed to monitor strain distribution and burst speed. Strain distribution in radial and circumferential directions of the rotor were measured using a wireless telemetry system based on bluetooth technology for real-time strain measurement. The strains was compared with pre-calculated design values to verify the initial rotor design. We noticed the rotor failed at 19,499 rpm in the spin test, 11 % lower than the predicted burst speed of 22,000 rpm. Failure occurred at the hub which connects the shaft and the composite rotor. The performance of the composite rotor was confirmed in a general sense, and the danger of unexpected failure of composite rotor during high-speed spinning was also demonstrated in this paper. Special attention should be paid to not only composite rotor but also hub when designing a flywheel energy storage system. The telemetry system needs to be further developed, especially enduring the high centrifugal forces, and can be used in a real time monitoring system for the flywheel energy storage system.

  • We designed bearingless rotor hub system which replace mechanical hinge/bearing with composite beam component and conducted fatigue analysis for flexbeam and torque tube. Extension/bending/torsional stiffness was calculated from 2D section analysis using VABS and 2D section structure analysis was applied for strain calculation. S-N curve of each composite material was generated using Wohler equation and fatigue analysis was conducted on weakness section which was decided from static structure analysis. CAMRAD II was used for load analysis and load analysis result was applied HELIX/FELIX standard load spectrum to generate bearingless rotor system load spectrum which was used fatigue safe life analysis.

  • This paper introduces the development procedure of paddle type small-scaled composite rotor blade for helicopter hingeless rotor system. Paddle type composite blade design was done by using CORDAS program developed by KARI and dynamic analysis for hingeless hub with blade is done by using FLIGHTLAB which is commercial software for helicopter comprehensive analysis. The procedure to manufacture complicated shape of paddle type blade tip was developed and composite blades were manufactured after establishing the effective curing method. Through this research, the development technology of composite rotor blade with complex aerodynamic shape were accumulated and these will be applied to the related research field, for example, full size composite blade development, etc.

  • This paper described the general dynamic point for rotor design and the design procedure of low vibration blade. Generally, rotor rotating natural frequencies are determined to minimize hub loads, blade vibration and to suppress ground resonance at rotor design stage. First, through rotor frequency diagram, natural frequencies must be far away from resonance point and rotating loads generated from blade can be transformed to non-rotating load to predict fuselage vibration. Vibration level was predicted at each forward flight condition by calculating cockpit's vertical acceleration transferred from non-rotating hub load assuming a fuselage as a rigid body. This design method is applied to design current Next-generation Rotor System Blade(NRSB) and will be applied to New Rotor which will be developed Further.

  • Structural dynamic characteristics and aeroelastic stability of a small-scale bearingless rotor system have been investigated. A flexbeam is one of the most important component of bearingless hub system. It must have sufficient torsional flexibility as well as baseline stiffness in order to produce feathering motion. In the present paper, a cross-shaped composite flexbeam has been proposed for a guarantee of torsional flexibility and flapwise and lagwise bending stiffness. One dimensional elastic beam model was used for the construction of a structural model. Equivalent isotropic sectional stiffness was used in the blade model, and the flexbeam was regarded as anisotropic; which has ten independent stiffness quantities. CAMRAD II has been used for the analysis of structural dynamic characteristics of the bearingless rotor system. Rotational natural frequencies and aeroelastic stability at hovering have been investigated. Analysis result shows that the cross-shaped flexbeam has the rotational natural frequency tuning capacity.

  • In this paper, a numerical study has been carried out to investigate the influence of jet fan design variables on the performance of a jet fan. In order to achieve an optimum jet fan design and to explain the interactions between the different geometric configurations in the jet fan, three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics and the DOE method have been applied. Several geometric variables, i.e., hub-tip ratio, meridional shape, rotor stagger angle, number of rotor-stator blades and stator geometry, were employed to improve the performance of the jet fan. The objective functions are defined as the exit velocity and total efficiency at the operating condition. Based on the results of computational analyses, the performance of the jet fan was significantly improved. The performance degradations when the jet fan is operated in the reverse direction are also discussed.

  • The aim of this study was to find the initial design value of turbine blade for electrical type turbocompound system generating 10 kW. Turbocompound is one of the waste heat recovery system applying to internal combustion engine to recover exhaust gas energy that was about 30 % of total input energy. To design the turbine blade, 1-D mean line flow model was used. Exhaust gas temperature, pressure, flow rate and turbine rotating speed was fixed as primary boundary conditions. The velocity triangles was defined and used to determine the rotor inlet radius and width, the rotor outlet radius at shroud and radius at hub, the rotor flow angles and the number of blades.
