  • Balance shaft has a key role in reducing a engine vibration in a vehicle and widely applied for current models. Since balance shaft module consists many sub-component and each part had its own operational characteristics, some different analysis background should be integrated into one sub-part in balance shaft module and this is the main obstacles in making a design process. Moreover, the balancing shaft rotating in high speed and such condition requires large safety factors in a design process owing to a lot of unexpected problems with the overwhelming rotation. Balance shaft is the core-component generating the intended unbalance as well as canceling the unbalance force or moment by the engine module. So, the balance shaft should meet the high fatigue resistance not to mention of NVH performance. In this paper, a design strategy focused on balance shaft is developed to build a optimal model considering a engine vibration. Putting the unbalance mass distribution as main design parameter, some candidate model is verified with structural and fatigue analysis most appropriate model is proposed here.

  • The possibility of noncontact excitation of vibrations in a shaft was investigated in order to enable online structural health monitoring of a shaft during its rotating condition without stop operation. The proposed noncontact exciter was devised to exclusively generate one of two shaft vibration modes, so called longitudinal and flexural. Using the prototypes and a lot of experiments on them, it was proven that bias magnetic field, exciting voltage, center frequency, and geometry of yokes have crucial impacts on its output characteristics.

  • The purpose of this work is to suggest a new non-contact damage detection method for rotating ferromagnetic shafts. The presence and the location of a damage in rotating shafts are assessed by means of longitudinal elastic waves propagating along the shafts. These waves are measured by non-contact magnetostrictive sensors consisting of a coil and bias magnets. This paper shows the effectiveness of the sensors in the damage detection of rotating shafts. Several issues occurring in the application of the sensors to rotating shafts are carefully investigated.

  • This paper measured and analyzed the source of total power loss of an ODD of a notebook computer. It shows that the biggest power loss is the windage loss due to the friction between rotating disk and surrounding air. It measured the power loss by the tilting motion of a rotating disc which is originated from the unbalanced mass of the rotating disc or the squareness between case-rotor and shaft. The power loss of rotating disc due to tilting motion was also calculated by using FLUENT, and it was correlated with the measured one. This paper shows that the one of the effective methods to reduce the power loss of an ODD is to reduce the tilting motion of a rotating disc.

  • Large quantity of bending deformation as well as rotating torque fluctuation at the balance shaft are main struggles during the operation in a high speed rotation and thereby, two issues should be cleared at the design process of balance shaft module. Since two issues are highly related with balance shaft itself and particularly much sensitive to the location of both supporting bearing and unbalance mass, the design strategy on balance shaft should be investigated at the aspect of controlling two critical issues at the early stage of balance shaft design. To tackle two main problems, the formulation of objective function that minimizes critical issues, both bending deformation as well as torque fluctuation, is suggested to derive the optimal information on balance shaft. Then, optimal informations are reviewed at the practical logics and the guideline at the selection of locations, both supporting bearing and unbalance mass, is addressed at the final chapter.

  • Ball bearings which were fitted between housing and shaft play an important role in rotating shaft system smoothly, Therefore bearing's running accuracy has significant influence on that of rotating machinery. Manufacturing accuracy of bearings as well as that of shaft and housing is main factor to affect bearing running accuracy In this paper, bearing's vibration and fatigue life considering raceway roundness of ball bearing before and after being fitted into housing are theoretically estimated. To perform analysis, a simple three degrees of freedom model was proposed and then these analysis was conducted utilizing the Newton-Raphson iterative method. The results show that vibration magnitude of ball bearing fitted into housing is considerably larger than before assembly, and bearing's theoretical L$_{10}$ fatigue life that ninety percent of the bearing population will endure decreased in about fifty percent.

  • To investigate the mechanism of friction-induced vibration and noise of ship water lubricated stern bearings, a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) nonlinear self-excited vibration model is established. The novelty of this work lies in the detailed analysis of influence of different parameters on the stability and nonlinear vibration characteristics of the system, which provides a theoretical basis for the various friction vibration and noise phenomenon and has a very important directive meaning for low noise design of water lubricated stern bearings. The results reveal that the change of any parameter, such as rotating speed of shaft, contact pressure, friction coefficient, system damping and stiffness, has an important influence on the stability and nonlinear response of the system. The vibration amplitudes of the system increase as (a) rotating speed of shaft, contact pressure, and the ratio of static friction coefficient to dynamic friction coefficient increase and (b) the transmission damping between motor and shaft decreases. The frequency spectrum of the system is modulated by the first mode natural frequency, which is continuous multi-harmonics of the first mode natural frequency. The response of the system presents a quasi-periodic motion.

  • This paper describes that the leaf spring damper(LSD) developed by authors can be controled by side clearance between side cover and leaf spring. The test rig and two prototype dampers with different side clearance were manufactured. Experiments were performed to investigate the effects of side clearance on the damping of leaf spring damper. The stiffness and damping coefficients are obtained from the displacements and the reaction forces generated by rotating the eccentric shaft. All dynamic coeffficients are plotted with the excitation frequency which is adjusted by rotating speed of shaft.

  • Bearing design of turbo type geared centrifugal air compressor for low vibration level has been studied. The Transfer Matrix Method was used in this paper to analyze the air-compressor consisting of impellers, multi-stage geared rotors, and oil-film hearings. We have to consider this air-compressor as multi-geared rotating system, because characteristics of rotor-bearing system are different from conventional characteristics of non-rotating system. From the view point of Rotordynamics, the stiffness and damping coefficient of oil-film bearing in case of compressor system are more sensitive than other design parameters such as shaft length, shaft diameter and the weight of impellers, etc. Therefore, the stiffness and damping coefficients on each bearing were considered as design parameters. As the result of this study, turbo type air compressor with low vibration level can be achieved.

  • In this paper, we designed and fabricated the magnetic bearings and built-in type cylindrical capacitive transducers for improving the vibration characteristics of rotating shaft. The eddy current and magnetic field from the electromagnet of the bearing don't affect the measuring signal of the capacitive type transducers so that it is possible to locate the capacitive sensor plates around the magnetic bearing poles and can improve the spillover problem which is induced by the noncollocation of the sensors and actuators. According to the sensitivity calibration schemes using a X-Y table, the cylindrical capacitive transducers have a good linearities in the .+-.70.mu.m range from the geometric center of the sensor plates. The measured results also show high displacement sensitivities of the sensors. According to the performance test of the magnetic bearing which is controlled by the analog PD controllers, we found that the built-in capacitive transducer system successfully measures the journal displacement in the magnetic field and therefore the magnetic bearing system supports the rotating shaft up to 12,000 rpm.
