In this paper, we identify the noise source and the path of a chiller. This chiller is newly developed for R-l34a refrigerant and 250 RT cooling capacity. The measured overall SPL of the developed turbo-chiller is about 100 dBA. Due to the high rotating speed of the centrifugal impeller, the nun noise source of the chiller is the blade passing frequency and its higher harmonics of the centrifugal impeller. This generated soundpropagates through the duct, and then transmits and radiates to the outer field. From the experiment, it is found that the high frequency noise is mostlytransmitted and radiated through the elbow duct, but the low frequency noise is transmitted and vadiated through the condenser wall. Therefore applying the absorbing material is an effective way of reducing the high and low frequency noise simultaneously. Measurement results show that the application of the sound absorbing material to the elbow duct reduced the overall sound pressure level by 4 dB compared to the 9 dBA reduction for the case of full enclosure. In order to control the generated noise, a dissipativetype silencer is also designed and tested. The silencer reduced the radiated noise about 7.5 dBA.
First, methods of numerical analysis of gas-particle flows is classified into micro, meso and macro scale approaches based on the concept of multi-scale mechanics. Next, the explanation moves on to discrete particle simulation where motion of individual particles is calculated numerically using the Newtonian equations of motion. The author focuses on the cases where particle-to-particle interaction has significant effects on the phenomena. Concerning the particle-to-particle interaction, two cases are considered: the one is collision-dominated flows and the other is the contact-dominated flows. To treat this interaction mathematically, techniques named DEM(Distinct Element Method) or DSMC (Direct Simulation Monte Carlo) have been developed DEM, which has been developed in the field of soil mechanics, is useful for the contact -dominated flows and DSMC method, developed in molecular gas flows, is for the collision-dominated flows. Combining DEM or DSMC with CFD (computer fluid dynamics), the discrete particle simulation becomes a more practical tool for industrial flows because not only the particle-particle interaction but particle-fluid interaction can be handled. As examples of simulations, various results are shown, such as hopper flows, particle segregation phenomena, particle mixing in a rotating drum, dense phase pneumatic conveying, spouted bed, dense phase fluidized bed, fast circulating fluidized bed and so on.

This paper investigates the dynamic characteristics of a tilted HDD spindle system with fluid dynamic bearings (FDBs). Tilting motion of a HDD spindle system may be caused by improper manufacturing tolerance, such as imperfect cylindricity between shaft and sleeve of FDBs, imperfect perpendicularity between shaft and thrust as well as the gyroscopic moment of the unbalanced mass of the rotating part. Tilting motion may result in the instability of the HDD spindle system and it may increase the disk run-out to limit memory capacity. This research proposes a modified Reynolds equation for the coupled journal and thrust FDBs to include the variable film thickness due to the cylindricity and the perpendicularity. Finite element method is used to solve the Reynolds equation for the pressure distribution. Reaction forces and friction torque are obtained by integrating the pressure and shear stress, respectively. The dynamic behavior is determined by solving the equations of a motion of a HDD spindle system in six degrees of freedom with the Runge-Kutta method to study whirling and tilting motions. This research shows that the cylindricity and the perpendicularity increase the tilting angle and whirl radius of the rotor.

The tilting pad journal bearings have been widely used to support high pressure/high rotating turbine rotors owing to their inherent dynamic stability characteristics. However, fatigue damages in the upper unloaded pads and the break of locking pins etc. by pad fluttering are continuously taken place in the actual steam turbines. The purpose of this paper is to develop a new bearing model that can prevent bearing problems effectively by pad fluttering in a tilting pad journal bearing. A new bearing model which has a wedged groove is suggested from the studies of fluttering mechanism performed by previously research works. The fluttering characteristics of the upper unloaded pad are studied experimentally in order to verify the reliability of a new bearing model. It can be known that the phenomenon of pad fluttering nearly does not occurred in the new bearing model under the various experimental conditions. And it is observed that any kinds of bearing failures by pad fluttering does not detect in the application of acture steam turbines.

This paper describes reliability characteristics of an air foil journal bearing for high-speed turbomachinery at a room temperature. To verify the reliability of air foil journal bearing, lift-off characteristics, load carrying capacity, and 10,000 cycle start-stop test were performed with a motor-driven test rig. A lift-off test shows the relationship between the rotating speed of the shaft and the frictional torque with bearing surface. About a load-carrying capacity, the tested air foil journal bearing produced a load capacity of 500N at an operating speed of 15,000rpm, which is compared with results of numerical analysis and empirical coefficients. Finally, the trends in change of start torque, stop torque, and bearing temperature were shown during a 10,000-cycle start-stop test of an air foil journal bearing. We found that an air foil bearing performs well, as a supported bearing for the high-speed turbocompressor.

The performance characteristics of centrifugal pump were measured experimentally when running with tap water and drag-reducing surfactant (Octadecyl dimethyl amine oxide (OB-8)) solutions. Tests have been performed on five cases of surfactant solutions with different concentrations (0ppm (tap water), 200ppm, 500ppm, 900ppm and 1500ppm) and four different rotating speeds of pump (1500rpm, 2000rpm, 2500rpm and 2900rpm). Compared with tap water case, the experimental results show that the total pump heads for surfactant solution cases are higher. And the pump efficiency with surfactant solutions also increases, but the shaft power for surfactant solutions cases decreases compared to t hat for tap water. There exists an optimal temperature for surfactant solutions, which maximizes the pump efficiency.
A rotordynamic and detailed stability analysis in accordance with API 617 standard were performed with a turbo-compressor, which is one of key rotating machinery in refinery, petroleum, and power plants. The system is composed of rotor shaft, impeller, sleeve hub, balance drum, and coupling hub. The rotor system is supported by tilting pad bearings, which has 5 pads and pad on loading condition. The rotordynamic analysis specified by API 617 includes the critical speed map, mode shape analysis, Campbell diagram, unbalance response analysis, and stability analysis. In particular, the specifications of stability analysis consist of a Level 1 analysis that approximates the destabilizing effects of the labyrinth seals and aerodynamic excitations, and Level 2 analysis that includes a detailed labyrinth seal aerodynamic analysis. The results of a rotordynamic analysis and stability analysis can evaluate the operating compressor health and can be utilized as a guide of its maintenance, repair and trouble solution.
Low NPSH and high pressure pumps are widely used for turbopump systems, which have an inducer and operate at high rotating speeds In this paper, a meanline method has been established for the preliminary design and performance prediction of pumps having an inducer for cavitating or non-cavitating conditions and at design or off-design points. The method was applied for the performance prediction of a fuel pump, which had been developed by Hyundai Mobis in collaboration with KeRC for a liquid rocket engine. The engine uses liquid methane and liquid oxygen as working fluids and rotates at 50,000 rpm KeRC carried out a model testing of the fuel pump with water as a working fluid at the reduced speed (10,000 ${\~}$ 15,000 rpm). Predicted performances by the method are shown to be in good agreement with experimental results for cavitating and non-cavitating conditions. The established meanline method can be used for the performance prediction and preliminary design of high speed pumps which have a inducer, impeller and volute.
Foil bearings have been successfully used for small high speed rotors, such as ACM(Air Cycle Machine), turbo charger, turbo compressor, high speed motor, etc. Recently advanced researches are concentrated on the high load capacity and the extreme temperature foil bearings to extend the application boundary. Some bearings are already adopted into cryogenic machines and micro gas turbines. In this paper, a foil journal bearing designed for high load capacity, which is under development, is introduced. The bearing is for the turbo refrigerator which has a rotor of 18${\~}$25 kgf rotating at 23,000${\~}$38,000 rpm. This application is well beyond conventional spectrum of foil bearings because the rotor is relatively heavy and the rotational speed is low. Therefore, the development is challenging. The foil bearing is a bump type, the size is 60mm in diameter and 50mm in length, the operating fluid is air and rotational speed is 26,000 rpm. In-house software was developed and used for bearing design. Tested maximum load capacity is 80kgf, 0.62 in terms of load capacity coefficient, and testing is being continued.
A new medical X-ray PIV technique was developed using a conventional medical X-ray tube. To acquire images of micro-scale particles, the X-ray PIV system consists of an x-ray CCD camera with high spatial resolution, and a X-ray tube with small a focal spot. A new X-ray exposure control device was developed using a rotating disc shutter to make double pulses which are essential for PIV application. Synchronization methodology was also developed to apply the PIV technique to a conventional medical X-ray tube. In order to check the performance and usefulness of the developed X-ray PIV technique, it was applied to a glycerin flow in an opaque silicon tube. Tungsten particles which have high X-ray absorption coefficient were used as tracer particles. Through this preliminary test, the spatial resolution was found to be higher than ultrafast MRI techniques, and the temporal resolution was higher than conventional X-ray PIV techniques. By improving its performance further and developing more suitable tracers, this medical X-ray PIV technique will have strong potential in the fields of medical imaging or nondestructive inspection as well as diagnosis of practical thermo-fluid flows.
