In this study, we estimated root zone soil moisture dynamics using remotely sensed (RS) data. A soil moisture data assimilation scheme was used to derive the soil and root parameters from MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. Based on the estimated soil/root parameters and weather forcings, soil moisture dynamics were simulated at spatio-temporal scales based on a hydrological model. For calibration/validation, the Little Washita (LW13) in Oklahoma and Chungmi-cheon/Seolma-cheon sites were selected. The derived water retention curves matched the observations at LW 13. Also, the simulated soil moisture dynamics at these sites was in agreement with the Time Domain Reflectrometry (TDR)-based measurements. To test the applicability of this approach at ungauged regions, the soil/root parameters at the pixel where the Seolma-cheon site is located were derived from the calibrated MODIS-based (Chungmi-cheon) soil moisture data. Then, the simulated soil moisture was validated using the measurements at the Seolma-cheon site. The results were slightly overestimated compared to the measurements, but these findings support the applicability of this proposed approach in ungauged regions with predictable uncertainties. These findings showed the potential of this approach in Korea. Thus, this proposed approach can be used to assess root zone soil moisture dynamics at spatio-temporal scales across Korea, which comprises mountainous regions with dense forest.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of root zone heating on the growth of cut minirose Rosa hybrida L. ′Little Marble′ in winter season. Effects of four different root zone temperatures of 16, 20, 24$^{\circ}C$ and non-heating control on the growth and productivity were compared. Harvested cut-flowers were measured for stem length, stem diameter, fresh and dry weights, numbers of leaves, stems and flowers, days to flower, and chlorophyll concentration. The results showed that mean height was the greatest at 16$^{\circ}C$. Days to flower was the shortest at 24$^{\circ}C$. Fresh and dry weights of top (shoot+leaf+flower), shoot and leaf were the greatest at 2$0^{\circ}C$. Stem and flower numbers were the greatest at 16$^{\circ}C$, but leaf number was the greatest at 2$0^{\circ}C$. Mean cut flower yield was the greatest at 16$^{\circ}C$. Chlorophyll concentration was slightly higher at 16$^{\circ}C$, but was not significantly different among the treatments. Stem diameter was the greatest at 2$0^{\circ}C$. Dry matter was the greatest at 24$^{\circ}C$. Total yield of cut rose stems increased with increasing temperature. Combined heating could save 24% in fuel cost as compared to the air heating alone. The results obtained suggested that optimal root zone temperature for the growth of cut rose "Little Marble" was 2$0^{\circ}C$, and the greenhouse heating energy can be saved by minimal air heating combined with root zone heating to 2$0^{\circ}C$.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of growth medium in pots composed of upland soil(S), rice straw manure(M), carbonated rice hull(CRH), and their mixture on growth of tobacco cv. NC 82. The growth of shoot and root was vigorous in order of medium S+M+CRH>M>CRH>S. In M+S medium, root growth in the part of manure was superior to upland soil. But root growth of upland soil part in M+S plot was more vigorous than that in upland soil only. It is possibly due to be influenced by manure in M+S plot. Total length and weight of root, number of roots, and especially for development of adventitious root were closely related to shoot growth. Roots grown in upland soil part was brownish gray in color, while the roots in manure part was milky white. The milky white colored roots had longer life than others. It was concluded that root zone environments derived from several media in pots closely related to shoot growth and disease tolerance of tobacco plant.

Experiments of local cooling and heating on crown and root zone of forcing cultivation of strawberry 'Seolhyang' using heat pump and root pruning before planting were conducted. During the daytime, the crown surface temperature of the crown local cooling treatment was maintained at $18{\sim}22^{\circ}C$. This is suitable for flower differentiation, while those of control and root zone local cooling treatment were above $30^{\circ}C$. Budding rate of first flower clusters and initial yields were in the order of crown local cooling, root zone local cooling and control in root pruning plantlet and non pruning plantlet, except for purchase plantlet. Those of root pruning plantlet were higher than those of non pruning plantlet. These trends were evident in the yield of the first flower cluster until February 14, 2018, and the effect of local cooling and root pruning decreased from March 9, 2018. The budding rates of the second flower cluster according to the local cooling and root pruning treatments were not noticeable compared to first flower cluster but showed the same tendency as that of first flower cluster. In the heating experiment, root zone local heating(root zone $20^{\circ}C$+inside greenhouse $5^{\circ}C$) and crown local heating(crown $20^{\circ}C$+inside greenhouse $5^{\circ}C$) saved 59% and 65% of heating fuel, respectively, compared to control(inside greenhouse $9^{\circ}C$). Considering the electric power consumption according to the heat pump operation, the heating costs were reduced by 55% and 61%, respectively.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of root zone restriction on yield and quality of muskmelon. Three cultivation methods, isolated bench, root zone restriction sheet(RZR sheet) and conventional soil culture, were compared from April 19th to July 17th. Soil temperature was higher at isolated bench and the growth of melon was accelerated at isolated bench compared to soil culture or RZR sheet. Fruit size was bigger in order of soil culture, isolated bench and RZR sheet, while sugar content and net shape were greatest at isolated bench, and the percentage of wilted plant was 3.3% at isolated bench, 25.0% at RZR sheet and 26.7% at soil culture. Therefore, marketable yield was higher at isolated bench compared to conventional soil culture.
Based on the soil moisture data assimilation suggested in the first paper (I), we estimated root zone soil moisture and evaluated drought severity using remotely sensed (RS) data. We tested the impacts of various spatial resolutions on soil moisture variations, and the model outputs showed that resolutions of more than 2-3 km resulted in over-/under-estimation of soil moisture values. Thus, we derived the 2 km resolution-scaled soil moisture dynamics and assessed the drought severity at the study sites (Chungmi-cheon sites 1 and 2) based on the estimated soil/root parameters and weather forcings. The drought indices at the sites were affected mainly by precipitation during the spring season, while both the precipitation and land surface characteristics influence the spatial distribution of drought during the rainy season. Also, the drought severity showed a periodic cycle, but additional research on drought cycles should be conducted using long-term historical data. Our proposed approach enabled estimation of daily root zone soil moisture dynamics and evaluation of drought severity at various spatial scales using MODIS data. Thus, this approach will facilitate efficient management of water resources.
This study was performed to investigate the behaviour of root zone environments under the control of soil temperature and tension of soil moisture near the root Bone of 'Kyoho' grapes tree grown on restricted root zone system in plastic greenhouse. Maximum diurnal air temperature inside plastic greenhouse ranged between 25.1 and 32.7$^{\circ}C$, and the average of nocturnal air temperature inside plastic greenhouse maintained at 18$^{\circ}C$ in winter season. Also the minimum diurnal relative humidity ranged between 50 and 55%, and the maximum nocturnal relative humidity ranged between 84 to 87%. At a depth of 15cm from soil surface, the average soil temperature maintained at 25.6$^{\circ}C$ for under-ground heating, and appeared to 17.4$^{\circ}C$ for unheated condition. Although the tension of soil moisture just after irrigation sharply decreased to pF 1.5, the tension of soil moisture at the depth of 15cm maintained at pF 2.0~2.2. It is suggested that the tension of soil moisture at the depth of 15cm might be used as the standard for the determination of irrigation set point. Effective drainage system is needed to prevent the spindly and succulent growth of vine trees grown in restricted root zone system.
This experiment was undertaken in order to clarify effect of NO$_3$-N/NH$_4$-N ratios(NO$_3$/NH$_4$ : 10:0, 8:2) in the nutrient solution on growth, yield, photosynthetic rate, relative concentration of chlorophyll and root activity of hydroponically grown pepper plants at three different root- zone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and 26$^{\circ}C$. Plant height, leaf number, stem diameter, fresh and dry weight of leaf and root were no effect in by three root- zone temperatures. However, leaf number, stem diameter, fresh and dry weight of leaf and stem, dry weight of root at 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ increased when NH$_4$-N was added to the solution. Under root-Bone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 26$^{\circ}C$ condition, fruit length were longer by the addition of NH$_4$-N. Fruit number and yield increased by the addition of NH$_4$-N at three root-zone temperatures. Photosynthetic rate decreased as root - zone temperature increased. Under root-zone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and 26$^{\circ}C$ condition, photosynthetic rate increased significantly by the addition of NH$_4$-N. Chlorophyll content of plants increased at 22$^{\circ}C$. Under root-zone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and 26$^{\circ}C$ condition, chlorophyll content of plants increased by the addition of NH$_4$-N. Root activity of increased at 26$^{\circ}C$ Under root-Bone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and 26$^{\circ}C$ condition, root activity increased by the addition of NH$_4$- N.
This study was conducted to investigate the influence of the root zone temperature on the changes in soil physicochemical environment and the growth of the apple trees. Root zone temperatures applied were 20. 25. 30. and $35^{\circ}C$. A pot experiment of 4-year-old fruit-bearing Fuji/M.26 apple trees was done from May 15. 1997 to August 15. 1997. Shoot length and shoot number of 4-year-old Fuji/M.26 was longest at $30^{\circ}C$ but decreased at $35^{\circ}C$. Oxygen concentrations in soil air were maintained from 17 to 18% at $20^{\circ}C$ but fluctuated from 10 to 14% at the end at $35^{\circ}C$. Carbon dioxide concentrations in soil air was highest at $35^{\circ}C$. Organic matter contents in soil decreased as root zone temperature and duration of treatment increased. Nitrate and ammonium contents in soil increased with rising root zone temperature in the beginning but nitrate contents decreased at $35^{\circ}C$ as time progressed. Nitrate content was higher in 10~15cm subsoil than in 25~30cm subsoil.
A rose factory type is a system that enables year-round, planned and mass production of high quality cut-rose. Conversion of a conventional system to a rose factory is essential to increase cut-rose export. Controlling root Bone in culled rose production factory is very important for economic and efficient production of rose. This study was conducted to determine optimum root zone temperature of nutrient solution in single-stemmed rose production system. The optimum temperature of the nutrient solution for growth, photosynthetic and transpiration rates for 'Red Velvet' was $15\~20^{\circ}C$. Whereas the optimum temperature for 'Vital' was $10\~15^{\circ}C$. However, growth was almost sloped at $30^{\circ}C$, resulting in concluding the adaptation of 'Vital' to high temperature was poor as compared with 'Red Velvet'.
