Baicalein (BA), a plant-derived active flavonoid present in the root of Scutellaria baicalensis, has been widely used for the treatment of stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders including depression. Previous studies have demonstrated that repeated restraint stress disrupts the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, resulting in depression. The behavioral and neurochemical basis of the BA effect on depression remain unclear. The present study used the forced swimming test (FST) and changes in brain neurotransmitter levels to confirm the impact of BA on repeated restraint stress-induced behavioral and neurochemical changes in rats. Male rats received 10, 20, or 40 mg/kg BA (i.p.) 30 min prior to daily exposure to repeated restraint stress (2 h/day) for 14 days. Activation of the HPA axis in response to repeated restraint stress was confirmed by measuring serum corticosterone levels and the expression of corticotrophin-releasing factor in the hypothalamus. Daily BA administration significantly decreased the duration of immobility in the FST, increased sucrose consumption, and restored the stress-related decreases in dopamine concentrations in the hippocampus to near normal levels. BA significantly inhibited the stress-induced decrease in neuronal tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity in the ventral tegmental area and the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) mRNA in the hippocampus. Taken together, these findings indicate that administration of BA prior to the repeated restraint stress significantly improves helpless behaviors and depressive symptoms, possibly by preventing the decrease in dopamine and BDNF expression. Thus, BA may be a useful agent for the treatment or alleviation of the complex symptoms associated with depression.
Antidoting effect of 1,8-naphthalic anhydride (NA) on butachlor [2-chloro-2', 6'-diethyl-N-(butoxyethyl) acetanilide] phytotoxicity in rice was determined at different seeding depths and application rates of butachlor. The most sensitive response to NA was found in mesocotyl of rice (Oryza saliva L.). The mesocotyl length decreased with use of NA when seeded 2 to 4 cm deep, whereas no effect was obtained in plant height, root length and coleoptile length. Phytotoxic effect of butachlor to rice sown in vermiculite saturated with butachlor solutions decreased with use of NA at all seeding depths employed. However, depth protection was not observed when planted 3 to 4 cm deep without use of NA. Use of NA resulted in reduction in the phytotoxicity at concentrations of butachlor lower than 40 ppmw. The results indicated that the antidoting effect of NA was not due to reduction of mesocotyl elongation which would result in decrease in butachlor uptake through the mesocotyl.
Plant flowering should be mainly affected by temperature and daylength. The study was carried out to measure the effect of temperature during winter on growth and floret flowering of Orostachys japonicus grown under 2 hour night break. Temperature was controlled above $10^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$ as heating boilers were run below them to compare the natural temperature. Night-break treatment was done on August 25 and afterward samples were taken every 4 weeks to check growth, morphological and flowering related characters. Plant height, inflorescence length, number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were increased in heating temperatures of > $10^{\circ}C$ compared to natural temperature although similar in the two heating ones. Leaves and bracts, florets, stem, root, shoot and total dry weights showed the same response as the above morphological and flowering related characters. Florets were more formed but less flowered with higher temperatures. Anthesis rates of individual plant were 100% in natural temperature, 25% in > $10^{\circ}C$ heating temperature but none in > $20^{\circ}C$ heating temperature.
The purpose of this study was to study of the effects of the bioglass and the natural coral on healing process of the alveolar bone defects. Three adult dogs aged 1 to 2 years were used in this study. Experimental alveolar bone defects were created surgically with surgical bur and bone chisel at the furcation area of the buccal surface of the right and left mandibular 3rd, 4th premolars. Twelve experimental alveolar bone defects were devided into four groups according to the type of graft materials. The groups were as follows : 1. flap operation with root planing & curettage(Negative control group) 2. flap operation with autogenous bone(Positive control group) 3. flap operation with bioglass(BG group) 4. flap operation with natural coral(NC group) At 2, 4, and 8 weeks, the dogs were serially sacrificed and specimens were prepared with Hematoxylin-Eosin stain for light microscopic evaluation. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The defect areas were filled with granulation tissue at two weeks in negative control group. But in other groups, the appearance of connective tissues around graft materials were formed more densely and the response of inflammation by graft materials itself was not found. 2. In every control and experimental groups at two weeks, there was seen the accumulation of the formation of new bone trabeculae at the bottom of defects and gradually expanded toward the graft materials and in autogenous group there was slightly seen the formation of new cementum. 3. There was seen the erosion of central portion of bioglass particles at two weeks in BG group, and the erosion of the central portion was developed more progressively and was filled with bone-like tissues at eight weeks. 4. The natural coral particles were encapsulated by densely connective tissues and seen the formation of new bone tissues at four weeks and developed more new bone and cementum formation at eight weeks. From the results of this study, the bioglass and the natural coral may be biocompatible and have a weak adverse reaction to the periodontal tissues.
The severe atrophic edentulism with poor neuromuscular control militates against successful conventional denture therapy. To such situation, a prescribing of dental implant treatment has been considered with some probability. Implant materials used as a trial for dental implants includes metals, plastic polymers and ceramics. The purpose of this study was to observe histologic response in osseointegration process at titanium implant-tissue interface based on biocompatibility at specific period of sequential natures which were divided into a half month, one, month, two months, three months and immediate as a base line. In this study, unilateral lower left premolar and molar teeth were extraced in three dogs. After allowing to heal for 6 months, three kinds of osseointegrated implant, $Br{\aa}nemark$, Corevent and kimplant(a prototype of SNU implant study)were inserted in each dog respectively according to the above sequence from front to back. The specimens were taken from those dogs at the same time since implant were inserted quite reverse order of the specified periods, and decalcified and processed for histologic examination for the light microscopy and the electron microscopy. The microscopic histologic findings at the interface between titanium implants and tissue were interpretated as follows : A. Light microscopic findings : a. Immediate : Implant were surrounded by compact bone and spongy bone. Microcrak was observed in the superficial bone tissue. Osteocytes were disappeared and bone lacunae were observed as a vacant space in some parts. In the contacting with the spongy bone, bone trabeculae and bone marrow were in contact with the implant. b. A half Month : Osteoblasts exist as a monolayer in th inner bone trabeculae and do bone additiocn. Osteoblasts&inflammatory cells were observed in some parts. c. One Month : The presence of osteoclasts decreased. Osteoblasts did active bone fromation, and bone marrow was in contact with the implant in the many places. d. Two Months : Bone formation was advanced in comparison with the b and c. The presence of osteoclsts was not observed. e. Three Months : The superficial bone tissue contacted with the implants was entirely composed by the compact bone. B. Electron microscopic findings : a. A half month and one month group : In the parts of the active bone formation, osteoblasts with the well developed endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus were arranged in the monolayer. In the parts of the bone resorption, ruffled border was well developed and many osteoclasts with the well-developed golgi apparatus, mitochondria, vacuole, vesicle and lysosome were existed. b. Three months group : No osteoblasts were observed in the superficial bone tissue. Bone matrix with collaen fiber was observed. c. No significant dirrerence in the histologic findings was observed in $Br{\aa}nemark$, Core-vent and kimplant.
The present study was conducted to characterize physiological responses of aerial part according to soil water stresses in 'Mihong' peach trees. Discolorations, wilting and falling of leaves were observed in chronological order as response for waterlogging and no irrigation and the phenomena started from basal to end of shoots. Shoot growth in elongation and thickness decreased and fallen leaves were severe in waterlogged trees. Function of water uptake by roots and photosynthesis and leaf respiration decreased by waterlogging. Leaf chlorophyll contents decreased in both treatments. In waterlogging treatment, decrease of chlorophyll was observed in normal leaves with waterlogging using light microscopy. Starch content was lower in both treatment and carbohydrate content was lower in root with waterlogging. These results demonstrated that waterlogging weakened the function of soil water uptake and movement and decreased photosynthesis and fallen leaves. Finally the peach trees would wither or suffer low temperature damage through the shortage of reserve accumulations. We suggested that waterlogging damage in peach trees could be reduced to take notice of irrigation and install drainage facility to improve soil condition.
Background : Peripheral nerves more rapidly recover than central nerves. However, it has been known that the degree of reaction of axons of peripheral nerves is affected by distinctive characteristics of axons and environmental factors near the axons. Taxol is a widely used medicine as for ovarian, breast, lung and gastric cancer. However it causes patients difficulties under treatment due to its toxic and side effects, which include persistent pain. Objectives : This study reviewed how SJT extract in vitro and in vivo affects nerve tissues of a sciatic nerve damaged by Taxol. It also studied how SJT extract in vivo affects axons of the sciatic nerve after the sciatic nerve was damaged by pressing. Methods : After vehicle, Taxol, and Taxol plus SJT were treated respectively for tissue of the sciatic nerve in vitro and then tissues were observed using Neurofilament 200, Hoechst, ${\beta}$-tubulin, $S100{\beta}$, caspase-3 and anti-cdc2. SJT was also oral medicated by injecting Taxol into the sciatic nerve of in vivo rats. Tissues of the sciatic nerve and axons of DRG sensory nerves were then observed using Neurofilament 200, Hoechst, ${\beta}$-tubulin, $S100{\beta}$, caspase-3 and p-Erk1/2. After inflicting pressing damage to the sciatic nerve of in vivo rats, tissues of the sciatic nerve and DRG sensory nerve were observed using Neurofilament 200, Hoechst, $S100{\beta}$, caspase-3, anti-cdc2, phospho-vimentin, ${\beta}1$-integrin, Dil reverse tracking and p-Erk1/2. Results : The group of in vitro Taxol plus SJT treatment had meaningful effects after sciatic nerve tissue was damaged by Taxol. The group of in vivo SJT treatment had effects of regenerating Schwann cells and axons which were damaged by Taxol treatment. The group of in vivo SJT had effects of regenerating axons in damaged areas after the sciatic nerve was damaged by pressing, and also had variations of distribution in Schwann cells at DRG sensory nerves and axons. Conclusions : This study confirmed that SJT treatment is effective for growth of axons in the sciatic nerve tissues and improvement of Schwann cells after axons of the sciatic nerve tissues was damaged. After tissues of sciatic nerve was damaged by pressing in vivo, SJT treatment had effects on promoting regeneration of axon in the damaged area and reactional capabilities in axons of DRG sensory nerves.

The aims of this study were to classify the cultivation status of medicinal crop farmers and to obtain basic data on domestic medicinal crops. To this end, 406 medicinal crop farmers participating in farming education programs in 14 cities and counties were surveyed over 10 months. The results were as follows. First, the biggest difficulty farmers faced in the overall production of medicinal crops was a lack of cultivation skills. Second, in a detailed inquiry about each difficulty item, the most difficult problems were injury by continuous cropping of root-using crops, shortage of specific farm machinery, uncertain market prices, and lack of knowledge about pest control or the positive list system (PLS). Third, the profitability of medicinal crops increased with career experience. Among the farmers who earned profits, requests for education and technical guidance were the most important factors for profitability. Fourth, the results of the analysis suggest that to achieve stable cultivation of medicinal crops, the following items need to be addressed: development and supply of basic cultivation technologies, climate response, registration of pest control pesticides, a solution to the injury by continuous cropping, and contracting cultivation expansion. Additionally, to improve profitability, it is necessary to create conditions that enable the same crops to grow for a long time in one region.
These experiments were conducted to investigate some effects of the soil fumigants Dow-fume MC-2, Cylone, TeloneC-17, and D-D on the growth response of the Korea ginseng(two-year old), Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer, and the chemical composition of the plants. Fumigant treatment increased growth of roots, stems, and leaves. The increase of root growth rates ranging from 2.8 to $58.7\%$ in fresh weight and 8.1 to $63.8\%$ in dry weight were observed in the 2-year old ginseng plants grown in the old ginseng soil treated with the different soil fumigants. The chemical analysis of inorganic elements such as N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Mn, and Zn was made for the roots, stems and leaves of the 2-year old plants. The increases or decreases of content of the elements were observed, and their contents of each of the elements were changed with the kind of fumigants, part of the plants, and soil depth of the fumigant treatments, but their changing tendencies were not steady.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of floral inhibition of Angelica gigas NAKAI in the hilly altitude located in the Northern Gyeongbuk Province from Feb. 1992 to 1994. The results obtained were as follows: As the cultivated areas are high, rate of bolting was significantly decreased, having high yield, good growth, and medicinal quality. It is considered that the optimal cultivating area was at least above 600m altitude. In the hilly altitude, the more shorten nursery period was, the more decreased rate of bolting was, it results in decreased yield, having no significant differences in contents such as extract and decursin. In bolting response from temperature treatment of the seedlings, treatment of temperature was significantly decreased floral induction, but rate of establishment was decreased by decayed root. Bolting rate at different organic resources has more reduced in single fertilization than that of in organic application, but among organic resources, compost of rice straw has the lowest bolting rate. As a result, yield and medicinal qualities at various organic resources were increased in application of organic resources which was no considerable tendency among organic resources.
