  • This article was conducted with the purpose of finding the religious meaning of Jeongeup (井邑) by paying attention to two areas of inquiry. The first examines religious interpretations of the place names of peaks, mountains, and villages that have already existed have existed since ancient times. The second area of inquiry looks into religious narratives about Jeongeup that appear in scriptural records of the Reordering Works of Heaven and Earth (1901~1909) as performed by Kang Jeungsan. Looking at these to areas of inquiry together, the place names and topography inherent in Jeongeup and Kang Jeungsan's various Jeongeup-related Reordering Works, can be summarized as embodying characteristics of 'beginning (始)' and 'origin (本)' which can be further likened to the meaning of 'water (水)' in a 'well (井).' First, Jeongeup equates to the heavenly origin of the Gucheon Sangje (Supreme God of the Ninth Heaven) faith in Jeungsan Thought. Mangje (Emperor-awaiting) Peak is a peak that represent the wish for the Lord's descent to earth. Seonmang (Immortal-awaiting) Village is a village that was waiting for an immortal. Jeung (Steamer-on-Cauldron) Mountain (Jeungsan 甑山) is a mountain on the earth and also the honorific name later taken by Kang Il-Sun. In relation to Jeungsan, it is interpreted that Jeungsan was born and incarnated in the village as a human in response to a plea from all divine sages, buddhas, and bodhisattvas, who had existed since the dawn of time and came to wish for salvation of humankind. This is because both Mangje Peak and Seonmang Village are connected to the meaning of 'mang (望 to await).' Second, the Reordering Works of Jeungsan which related to Jeongeup show that Jeongeup has carries the meaning of 'beginning (始源)' and 'origin (本源).' The character, Jeong (井), in Jeongeup is seen as a place that contains water energy, and symbols and allusions referring to this can be found in various Reordering Works. As a symbol or allusion, the well can be seen as a new start, the lives of all people of the world, the purification of the world, and returning to the original root everything. These symbolic images can be found in the life of Kang Jeungsan from his incarnation to his passing into Heaven. This is because Jeong can allude to the origin by the Ninth Heaven, the beginning of the Later World's paradisiacal land of immortals, and the end of the Former World (Seoncheon 先天).

  • Algal bloom outbreaks are frequently reported around the world, and serious water pollution problems arise every year in Korea. It is necessary to protect the aquatic ecosystem through continuous management and rapid response. Many studies using satellite images are being conducted to estimate the concentration of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), an indicator of algal bloom occurrence. However, machine learning models have recently been used because it is difficult to accurately calculate Chl-a due to the spectral characteristics and atmospheric correction errors that change depending on the water system. It is necessary to consider the factors affecting algal bloom as well as the satellite spectral index. Therefore, this study constructed a dataset by considering water quality, hydrological and meteorological factors, and sentinel-2 images in combination. Representative ensemble models random forest and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) were used to predict the concentration of Chl-a in eight weirs located on the Nakdong river over the past five years. R-squared score (R2), root mean square errors (RMSE), and mean absolute errors (MAE) were used as model evaluation indicators, and it was confirmed that R2 of XGBoost was 0.80, RMSE was 6.612, and MAE was 4.457. Shapley additive expansion analysis showed that water quality factors, suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, and the band ratio using red edge bands were of high importance in both models. Various input data were confirmed to help improve model performance, and it seems that it can be applied to domestic and international algal bloom detection.

  • Purpose : To evaluate clinical and radiographic differential diagnosis between ameloblastoma and odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) using clinical data, plain radiographs, and CT. Materials and Methods: 25 cases of ameloblastoma and 44 cases of OKC diagnosed in biopsy, were selected from the files stored in Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Seoul National University Dental Hospital from 1999 to 2001, and evaluated using following criteria: sex and age, location, shape, border to normal bone tissue, effect to adjacent tissues, homogeneity in the lumen of the lesion, response of the cortical bone, long-to-short length (LIS) ratio of the lesion, and expansion angle of the cortex. Results: Ameloblastoma and OKC were seen most frequently in third decades and no statistical significance was noted between both sexes. Ameloblastoma occurred most frequently in mandibular angle and ramus area (68%) and OKC at the maxillary molar (34.1 %), and mandibular angle and ramus area (43.2%). The root resorption of the adjacent teeth, mandibular canal displacement, and the impaction of teeth were seen more frequently in ameloblastoma than in OKC. The LIS ratio measured in CT was largest in maxillary OKC cases, followed by mandibular ameloblastoma, and mandibular OKC (1.2, 1.8 and 2.4 respectively). The expansion angle of the cortex shows a statistically significant difference between ameloblastoma (48.8°) and OKC (31.5°). Conclusion : The numeric morphology (LIS ratio) and expansion angle of the cortical bone of the lesion measured in computed tomography can be used to differentiate the ameloblastoma and odontogenic keratocyst.

  • Pyrifluquinazon is known to act as a feeding inhibitor in several insect species. In this study, we investigated the effect of pyrifluquinazon on the whiteflies, Trialeurodes vaporariorum and Bemisia tabaci. Pyrifluquinazon showed high insecticidal activity (> 90%) against adult T. vaporariorum and B. tabaci at 12.5 ppm to 50 ppm. However, there was no effect on eggs and nymphs of both species. Pyrifluquinazon showed low insecticidal activity in root and foliar uptake. Control efficacy of pyrifluquinazon was above 90% at 5 days after treatment. In order to investigate the behavioral response of the whiteflies initiated by application of pyrifluquinazon, we tested the contact toxicity and ingestion toxicity. After 1 h of contact, whitefly drop, wing convulsion, and paralysis were observed. Similar phenomenon of whitefly population was observed in test of ingestion toxicity after 3 h. In the choice test, pyrifluquinazon showed repellent activity against both species. These results suggest that pyrifluquinazon cause behavioral disorder rather than direct inhibition of feeding.

  • Objectives : Platycodon Root is frequently used in traditional medicine to treat inflammatory diseases of the throat. The purpose of this study was to characterize the effect of the EtOH extract of fermented Platycodon grandiflorum on the ameliorative effects on the Antipruritic Effect of atopic dermatitis mouse model induced by compound 48/80 and ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic responses in mice. Methods : In the present study, we examined the anti allergic effect of Platycodon grandiflorum (PR) and its fermented production (FPR) in several mouse model. We measured acute ear edema in a mouse model caused by TPA and consecutively histological change of Ear tissue was observed by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. and also Scratching behaviors by compound 48/80 was investigated. The levels of allergic mediators such as immunoglobulin (Ig) E, and anti-oxidant markers such as SOD and MDA in the sera of OVA induced allergic mice were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results : FPR inhibited compoud 48/80-induced scratching behavior in mice, as well as acetic acid-induced writhing in mice. The anti-scratching behavioral effect of FPR was more potent than PR. FPR extract significantly decreased the serum levels of IgE and MDA compared with those of OVA control group. Conclusions : These results indicate that Anti allergic effect of Platycodon grandiflorum is enhanced by fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisae and FPR may be useful for protection from the itching reactions, which are IgE-mediated representative skin allergic diseases.

  • OBJECTIVES : The objective of this research is to determine the moisture resistance of the freeze-thaw process occurring in low-noise porous pavement using either hydrated-lime or anti-freezing agent. Various additives were applied to low-noise porous asphalt, which is actively paved in South Korea, to overcome its disadvantages. Moreover, the optimum contents of hydrated-lime and anti-freezing agent and behavior properties of low-noise porous asphalt layer are determined using dynamic moduli via the freeze-thaw test. METHODS : The low-noise porous asphalt mixtures were made using gyratory compacters to investigate its properties with either hydrated-lime or anti-freezing agent. To determine the dynamic moduli of each mixture, impact resonance test was conducted. The applied standard for the freeze-thaw test of asphalt mixture is ASTM D 6857. The freeze-thaw and impact resonance tests were performed twice at each stage. The behavior properties were defined using finite element method, which was performed using the dynamic modulus data obtained from the freeze-thaw test and resonance frequencies obtained from non-destructive impact test. RESULTS : The results show that the coherence and strength of the low-noise porous asphalt mixture decreased continuously with the increase in the temperature of the mixture. The dynamic modulus of the normal low-noise porous asphalt mixture dramatically decreased after one cycle of freezing and thawing stages, which is more than that of other mixtures containing additives. The damage rate was higher when the freeze-thaw test was repeated. CONCLUSIONS : From the root mean squared error (RMSE) and mean percentage error (MPE) analyses, the addition rates of 1.5% hydrated-lime and 0.5% anti-freezing agent resulted in the strongest mixture having the highest moisture resistance compared to other specimens with each additive in 1 cycle freeze-thaw test. Moreover, the freeze-thaw resistance significantly improved when a hydrated-lime content of 0.5% was applied for the two cycles of the freeze-thaw test. Hence, the optimum contents of both hydrated-lime and anti-freezing agent are 0.5%.

  • Year-round cultivation of a monocarpic plant Orostachys japonicus should be possible in case to controlling floret flowering. To give some information on its year-round cultivation, this study was carried out to examine the effect of night-break treatment time (June 10, Aug. 25) on its growth, morphological characters, and flowering. Night-break treatment of 2 hours at midnight were done since Aug. 25 and heating were made under $20^{\circ}C$ Samples were taken every 4 weeks from Aug. 25. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample until March 9. Plant height, inflorescence length, number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were greater in the earlier treatment than in the later one. Leaves and bracts, floret, stem, root, shoot and total dry weights showed the same response as plant height did to the night-break treatment time. Florets were more formed in the earlier treatment than in the later treatment in which they were flowered only on March 9, meaning that its year-round cultivation should be possible under night-break treatment before bolting and heating during winter season.

  • The purpose of this study was to observe the tissue response to the orthodontic force applied immediately after buccal horizontal subapical osteotomy of maxilla. Five mongrel cats weighing about 2.5 Kg were used for this experiment. The left upper canine and premolar of each cat served as a experimental side and the right ones as a control side. On the experimental side, a 100gm orthodontic force was applied between the upper canine and premolar immediately after the osteotomy. On the control side, the same orthodontic force was applied without the osteotomy. After 7days, the experimental animals were sacrificed. The results were as follows: 1. In the pressure zones of the experimental group, significant increase of osteoclasts and direct resolution along the alveolar bone surface was observed as compared with those of the control group. 2. In the pressure 2ones of the experimental group, a less extensive hyalinized zone was observed than those of the control group. 3. In the pressure zones of both group, no root resorption was found. 4. Tn the tension zones of the experimental group, new bone deposition increased along the alveolar bone surface as compared with those of the control group. In conclusion, the results suggest the possibility that early orthodontic treatment after orthognathic surgery may have some benefits if the stability of the repositioned segment at surgery is secured.

  • Laron syndrome was first described by Dr. Laron. Administration of exogenous growth hormone failed to stimulate insulin-like growth factor-I(IGF-I) production which was related to postnatal growth, because these patients lacked receptors in the liver for this hormone. The diagnosis of this syndrome is based on the typical features of GH resistance such as normal or elevated serum GH, low serum IGF-I, and impaired IGF-I response to hGH. Laron syndrome patients showed characteristically severe postnatal growth failure and markedly reduced adult height. This report describes the oral and maxillofacial manifestations of children associated with Laron syndrome. Children with Laron syndrome have several dental and skeletal irregularities. Relatively little is known of the direct effect of Laron syndrome on dental development. Further research should be needed.

  • To investigate the effect of calcium chloride ($CaCl_2$) using for deicing salts in winter on gas exchange and stomatal responses of 3-year-old Prunus serrulata, we treated twice (1 L) $CaCl_2$ solution (0.5%, 1.0% and 3.0%) in the root zone before leaf unfolding. Stomatal conductance ($g_s$), photosynthetic rate ($P_n$), transpiration rate ($T_r$) and water use efficiency (WUE) in the leaves of P. serrulata were decreased with increasing of $CaCl_2$ concentration. Even though stomatal conductance and photosynthetic rate were reduced by $CaCl_2$, intercellular $CO_2$ concentration ($C_i$) in $CaCl_2$ treatments has similar or higher values compared with control. These results suggest that non-stomatal limitation as well as stomatal limitation induced the reduction of photosynthetic rate together. On the other hands, treatment of $CaCl_2$ before leaf unfolding also affected leaf morphology traits. We proposed that reductions of stomatal length and leaf size and high pore density with increasing salinity is adaptative mechanism to reduce the water loss in plant.
