A Study on Predicting TDI(Trophic Diatom Index) in tributaries of Han river basin using Correlation-based Feature Selection technique and Random Forest algorithm (Correlation-based Feature Selection 기법과 Random Forest 알고리즘을 이용한 한강유역 지류의 TDI 예측 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to predict Trophic Diatom Index (TDI) in tributaries of the Han River watershed using the random forest algorithm. The one year (2017) and supplied aquatic ecology health data were used. The data includes water quality(BOD, T-N, $NH_3-N$, T-P, $PO_4-P$, water temperature, DO, pH, conductivity, turbidity), hydraulic factors(water width, average water depth, average velocity of water), and TDI score. Seven factors including water temperature, BOD, T-N, $NH_3-N$, T-P, $PO_4-P$, and average water depth are selected by the Correlation Feature Selection. A TDI prediction model was generated by random forest using the seven factors. To evaluate this model, 2017 data set was used first. As a result of the evaluation, $R^2$, % Difference, NSE(Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency), RMSE(Root Mean Square Error) and accuracy rate show that this model is compatible with predicting TDI. To be more concrete, $R^2$ is 0.93, % Difference is -0.37, NSE is 0.89, RMSE is 8.22 and accuracy rate is 70.4%. Also, additional evaluation using data set more than 17 times the measured point was performed. The results were similar when the 2017 data set were used. The Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test shows there was no statistically significant difference between actual and predicted data for the 2017 data set. These results can specify the elements which probably affect aquatic ecology health. Also, these will provide direction relative to water quality management for a watershed that must be continuously preserved.

Estimating the Forest Micro-topography by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) Photogrammetry (무인항공기 사진측량 방법에 의한 산림 미세지형 평가)

  • Unmanned aerial vehicles(UAV) photogrammetry provides a cost-effective option for collecting high-resolution 3D point clouds compared with UAV LiDAR and aerial photogrammetry. The main objectives of this study were to (1) validate the accuracy of 3D site model generated, and (2) determine the differences between Digital Elevation Model(DEM) and Digital Surface Model(DSM). In this study, DEM and DSM were shown to have varying degree of accuracy from observed data. The results indicated that the model predictions were considered tend to over- and under-estimated. The range of RMSE of DSM predicted was from 8.2 and 21.3 when compared with the observation. In addition, RMSE values were ranged from 10.2 and 25.8 to compare between DEM predicted and field data. The predict values resulting from the DSM were in agreement with the observed data compared to DEM calculation. In other words, it was determined that the DSM was a better suitable model than DEM. There is potential for enabling automated topography evaluation of the prior-harvest areas by using UAV technology.

  • The study intends to investigate a short-run and a long-run causality among money, income, and prices in the Keynesian and Monetarists framework. This study emphasizes the importance of unrecorded money, which exists alongside legal monetary assets and plays a dual function in determining economic prosperity. The underground economy, which is a hidden component of aggregate economic activity, is determined using Tanzi's monetary approach (Tanzi, 1980). This research uses a time series of annual data from 1990 to 2019 for this purpose. The data is extracted from the World Bank database for the monetary and development indicators. The study keeping in view the trending nature in data follows a unit root testing followed by the Autoregressive Distributive Lag Model (ARDL) to assess the long and short-run dynamics of causality among the variables. In both the pricing and income equations, the study finds a significant level link among the variables; however, there is no evidence of the presence of a level association in the money equation. The short-run causal relationship provides evidence of bi-directional causation between the supply of money and national income. The outcome of this study advise that though the view point of both the Monetarist and Keynesian school holds in both short and long run, however, in Pakistan only the Monetarists' role of money supply and income holds in Pakistan. This evidence would be of precise interest to the policy-makers.

Multi-Image RPCs Sensor Modeling of High-Resolution Satellite Images Without GCPs (고해상도 위성영상 무기준점 기반 다중영상 센서 모델링)

  • High-resolution satellite images have high potential to acquire geospatial information over inaccessible areas such as Antarctica. Reference data are often required to increase the positional accuracy of the satellite data but the data are not available in many inland areas in Antarctica. Therefore this paper presents a multi-image RPCs (Rational Polynomial Coefficients) sensor modeling without any ground controls or reference data. Conjugate points between multi-images are extracted and used for the multi-image sensor modeling. The experiment was carried out for Kompsat-3A and showed that the significant accuracy increase was not observed but the approach has potential to suppress the maximum errors, especially the vertical errors.

Predicting rock brittleness indices from simple laboratory test results using some machine learning methods

  • Brittleness as an important property of rock plays a crucial role both in the failure process of intact rock and rock mass response to excavation in engineering geological and geotechnical projects. Generally, rock brittleness indices are calculated from the mechanical properties of rocks such as uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength and modulus of elasticity. These properties are generally determined from complicated, expensive and time-consuming tests in laboratory. For this reason, in the present research, an attempt has been made to predict the rock brittleness indices from simple, inexpensive, and quick laboratory test results namely dry unit weight, porosity, slake-durability index, P-wave velocity, Schmidt rebound hardness, and point load strength index using multiple linear regression, exponential regression, support vector machine (SVM) with various kernels, generating fuzzy inference system, and regression tree ensemble (RTE) with boosting framework. So, this could be considered as an innovation for the present research. For this purpose, the number of 39 rock samples including five igneous, twenty-six sedimentary, and eight metamorphic were collected from different regions of Iran. Mineralogical, physical and mechanical properties as well as five well known rock brittleness indices (i.e., B1, B2, B3, B4, and B5) were measured for the selected rock samples before application of the above-mentioned machine learning techniques. The performance of the developed models was evaluated based on several statistical metrics such as mean square error, relative absolute error, root relative absolute error, determination coefficients, variance account for, mean absolute percentage error and standard deviation of the error. The comparison of the obtained results revealed that among the studied methods, SVM is the most suitable one for predicting B1, B2 and B5, while RTE predicts B3 and B4 better than other methods.

PATTERNS OF ASSIMILATION OF IGBO VOWELS : AN ACOUSTIC ACCOUNT

  • Igbo, a new Benue Congo language has a vowel harmony system which, like that of Akan, is based on the pharynx size or tongue root position. In this study we examine Igbo vowel harmony with particular reference to assimilatory patterns of vowels in different harmony sets. This is to gain some insight into the factors involved in Igbo vowel assimilation, and to establish to what extent reports on Akan vowel assimilation are validated in Igbo. Tokens of the eight phonemic vowels of Standard Igbo are recorded from three native speakers of Igbo. The vowels are acoustically investigated (using the LPC analysis of CSL) in individual lexical items and within carefully designed carrier phrases. The F1 and F2 values of the vowels are obtained as these formant values are generally useful in establishing the salient characteristics of vowels. Vowels from the harmony sets are juxtaposed in the carrier phrases to ascertain the extent of assimilation. Results of the investigation show that the F1 values, to a large extend, are enough to characterize these vowels. The (-Expanded) vowels have higher F1 values than their (+Expanded) counterpart. Where there is an overlap in F1 values for some vowels the F1 bandwidth values serve to distinguish between the vowels. The overlap often reported in Akan for /I/ and /e/ on the one hand and /${\mho}$/ and /o/ on the other is not validated in Igbo. While the F1 values for these pairs of vowels are quite similar for one of our speakers, there is an appreciable difference between the F1 values of these vowels for the other two speakers. There is however an overlap for /e/ and /o/ for one of the speakers. Assimilations are generally regressive across word boundaries. It is, however, necessary to point out that the general perceptual impression that one of the vowels completely assimilates to the other, is not borne out by our investigation. Most of our F1 and F2 values for the vowels in individual lexical items are altered in assimilations. This then suggests that assimilation involving these vowels is partial rather than complete. The emerging 'allophones' are acoustically similar to the (+Expanded) vowel involved in the assimilation, that is when vowels from different harmony sets are involved. We conclude that while assimilation of Igbo vowels involves some phonological considerations, phonetic factors appear to be permanent in deciding the final form of the vowels.

The Effect of Modified Swing Method on the Muscle Activation Patterns of Upper Limb in Wheelchair Badminton Players

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of modified swing to prevent shoulder injury by analyzing differences in the muscle activation patterns of upper limb by the swing method in wheelchair badminton players. Research design, data, and methodology: 10 wheelchair badminton players participated in the experiment as subjects and performed 10 high clears and 10 smashes in both traditional and modified swing methods toward a shuttlecock hung at the height of racket impact point. For each trial, activation patterns of biceps brachii, triceps brachii, anterior deltoid, and posterior deltoid were measured from the upper limb participating in the swing from which the duration, peak, and root mean square (RMS) of electromyography (EMG) activities from swing initiation to shuttle impact were calculated. The maximum swing velocity of the smash and the distance of the high clear were also measured with both methods to compare differences in the swing velocity and shuttle hit distance. Results: Differences in the EMG peak and RMS of the anterior deltoid by swing methods were shown to differ by the skill type, being higher in the traditional swing method than the modified during only the high clear. The EMG peak and RMS, and the duration of the posterior deltoid were higher and longer with the traditional swing method than the modified during both the smash and high clear. The intensities of the biceps brachii and triceps brachii activities measured during the smash and high clear were higher in the traditional swing method than the modified, and the biceps brachii and triceps activity durations during the high clear were shorter in the modified swing method than the traditional. The maximum swing velocity of the smash was faster with the traditional swing method than the modified, while the distance of the high clear did not differ significantly. Conclusions: These results suggest that the modified swing can be an effective performance method for preventing shoulder injuries without undue loss of impact power in wheelchair badminton players by reducing excessive loads imposed on the shoulder and allowing the optimal use of the elbow extension.

Experimental study of flow separation upstream of the riverine weir (하천 보 전방의 박리 흐름에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • 하천 보 상류영역에서 발생하는 박리 흐름을 분석하기 위해 실험수로에 하천보 모형을 설치하고, 보 주변에서 발생하는 흐름 구조를 입자 영상 유속계(PIV)로 이용하여 정밀하게 측정하였다. 본 연구에 사용된 보는 하천 설계기준을 따른, 전방 수직벽과 하류 경사램프가 있는 유한한 마루 길이 보이다. 실험 조건은 보 상·하류부 수심으로 인한 4가지 흐름(Hydraulic jump, Plunging jet, Surface wave, Surface jet)을 기반으로 설정하여 수리조건에 따른 유속 특성을 규명하였다. 실험에서 측정한 수직-수평방향 평균 유속·유선도를 분석한 결과, 보 전방의 하부에서 재순환 흐름이 관측되었고, 역방향 흐름도 이 지역에서 발견되었다. 유속 편차의 제곱 평균(Root Mean Square) 흐름장에서 보 전방과 재순환 흐름 영역에 불안전한 흐름이 강하게 발견되었다. 역방향 흐름은 박리 흐름에서 발견되는 주요 특성으로, 역방향 흐름의 전체 면적을 매 관측마다 측정하여 이를 분석한 결과, 재순환 흐름의 면적은 오른쪽으로 기울어진 분포를 가지고, 항상 0보다 큰 값을 가지는 것으로 나타났다. 재순환 면적에 따른 흐름 특성은 역방향 흐름 면적에 대한 조건부 평균을 이용하여 파악했는데, 조건부 평균의 구간은 재순환 흐름의 중심에서 지배적인 주기값을 이용했다. 역방향 흐름이 작은 영역에선, 보 상류의 흐름이 재순환 흐름으로 말려들어가는 열린 박리흐름이 나타나며, 역방향 흐름이 큰 경우에는 재순환 영역의 흐름은 보 상류의 흐름과 분리되는 닫힌 박리흐름이 발생하였다. 역방향 흐름이 가장 큰 경우, 보 전방의 박리흐름은 보의 상단을 넘는 것으로 관찰되었다. 이러한 결과를 통해 보 마루에서 발생하는 박리흐름이 보 전방에 박리흐름에 영향을 미치는 것으로 파악되었다. 조건부 평균된 역방향 흐름의 면적과 박리 지점(separation point)의 관계를 분석한 결과, 역방향 흐름의 오른쪽으로 기울어진 분포와 대규모 흐름 방출 현상이 관측되었다. 박리 지점의 위치와 수리 매개변수의 관계를 분석한 결과, 상류의 수심 증가에 따라 증가하는 경향이 나타났다.

Biomineralization of three calcium silicate-based cements after implantation in rat subcutaneous tissue

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the dystrophic mineralization deposits from 3 calcium silicate-based cements (Micro-Mega mineral trioxide aggregate [MM-MTA], Biodentine [BD], and EndoSequence Root Repair Material [ESRRM] putty) over time after subcutaneous implantation into rats. Materials and Methods: Forty-five silicon tubes containing the tested materials and 15 empty tubes (serving as a control group) were subcutaneously implanted into the backs of 15 Wistar rats. At 1, 4, and 8 weeks after implantation, the animals were euthanized (n = 5 animals/group), and the silicon tubes were removed with the surrounding tissues. Histopathological tissue sections were stained with von Kossa stain to assess mineralization. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) were also used to assess the chemical components of the surface precipitates deposited on the implant and the pattern of calcium and phosphorus distribution at the material-tissue interface. The calcium-to-phosphorus ratios were compared using the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test at a significance level of 5%. Results: The von Kossa staining showed that both BD and ESRRM putty induced mineralization starting at week 1; this mineralization increased further until the end of the study. In contrast, MM-MTA induced dystrophic calcification later, from 4 weeks onward. SEM/EDX showed no statistically significant differences in the calcium- and phosphorus-rich areas among the 3 materials at any time point (p > 0.05). Conclusions: After subcutaneous implantation, biomineralization of the 3-calcium silicate-based cements started early and increased over time, and all 3 tested cements generated calcium- and phosphorus-containing surface precipitates.
