  • The successful restoration program requires a comprehensive understanding of variables influencing seedling efficiency. Below-ground is hypothesized to have a major impact on seedling performance of species when planted in agriculture, and degraded areas with different types of mulching. This study investigated on Sg. Terla Forest Reserve in Cameron Highlands Pahang, Malaysia. In this study randomized complete block design (RCBD) was used. The excavation method was applied to study the root system development, above, and below ground biomass distributions under different types of mulching: coconut mulching (CM), oil palm mulching (OM), plastic mulching (PM) and control (CK). The root diameter, main root length, lateral root length, root coiling, and root direction toward to sun were recorded. The results in this study indicate that mulching had significant effect on root diameter, main root length, and root distributions among treatments while for lateral root length, root: shoot ratio, dry biomass distributions, and above and below ground biomass did not showed significant effect among treatments. The highest values for root diameter, lateral root length, main root length, root distributions, dry biomass distributions and above and below ground biomass were showed in CM treatments. However 75% of root coiling was observed in seedlings between treatments.

  • The solubility and miscibility measurement apparatus has been developed and used to obtain data for refrigerant/oil mixture. The solubility and miscibility data for R-134a/46 ISO VG Polyalkylen Glycol(PAG) oil mixture are obtained over the temperature range from -20 to 6$0^{\circ}C$ with a 1$0^{\circ}C$ interval and the oil concentration range from 0 to 90wt%. Using the experimental data, an empirical model is developed to predict the solubility relations for R-134a/PAG oil mixture at equilibrium. The average root-mean-square deviation between measured data and calculated results from the empirical model is 4.2%. Raoult's rule and Flory-Noggins theory are also used to predict mixture behavior. Immiscibility is observed for R-134a/46 ISO VG PAG oil mixture at low oil concentrations of 4.6, 10.1, and 20.4wt%.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the proper fillet weld size for the stiffeners on hull bottom plate of crude oil tanker. To achieve it, the effective notch stress and hot spot stress of the fillet weld with leg length specified in the rule were evaluated by using comprehensive FE analyses. Based on the results, the fatigue damages at each location of weld were calculated. Meanwhile the transitional behavior of initial welding distortion in the hull bottom plate under the design conditions was investigated by using a non-linear FEA. Welding distortion and residual stress introduced during fabrication process were considered as initial imperfections. According to FE analysis results, if the fillet leg length satisfies the design criteria of the classification society, the concern on the root failure at the fillet welds in the bottom hull plate during the design life can be negligible. In addition, considering the transitional behavior of the distortion during the service life, the fillet leg length should be minimized.

  • As a search for natural antioxidants, antioxdative fractions in Pueraria roots were extracted, identified using column chromatography, thin layer chromatography or high performance liquid chromatography. The components which have most effective antioxidative activities were further identified by IR and GC-MS. Separated antioxidative components were then added to four different oils to examine their antioxidative activities. Yield of extract obtained from pueraria root powder by solvent extraction using four step solvent systems was 2.54%. Antioxidative activity of the extracts was as effective as that of 100 ppm ${\delta}$-tocopherol addition, when 0.1% of the extracts was added to linoleic acid. The strongest antioxidative component of methanol extract of pueraria root was identified as puerarin. Aunioxidative activity of puerarin on lard was more effective than ${\alpha}$-tocopherol, but less effective than ${\delta}$-tocopherol. When the puerarin was added to edible oil and heat treated at $145^{\circ}C$, the acid value was lowest in lard and was highest in soybean oil. Antioxidative activity in terms of carbonyl value, thiobarbituric acid value and anisidine value was most high in palm oil and least in soybean and cottonseed oil.

  • This study performs a root cause analysis of the sticking that occurs in the hydraulically actuated wet type multi-disc friction clutch in a ship's diesel engine propulsion system that uses rubber elastic coupling. The fishbone method was used to study the sticking through dismantling investigation of the reduction gear and clutch, investigation of the components, and onboard system tests including nondestructive testing. The friction plate sticking is caused by the slip due to friction heat resulting from the leakage of control oil through cracks in the assembled hollow shaft. The friction plate cooling oil also leaks simultaneously through the crack, and partial sticking occurs due to the hot spots in the friction plates. These are caused by insufficient amount of cooling oil due to oil leakage.

  • Objectives: The usage of medicinal plants as natural antimicrobial agents has grown in many fields including dental medicine. The aim of this in vitro study was three-fold: (i) to determine the chemical compositions of the Ferula gummosa essential oil (FGEO), (ii) to compare the antimicrobial efficacy of the oil with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and chlorhexidine (CHX), (iii) to assess the toxic behavior of FGEO in different concentrations compared to 5% NaOCl and 0.2% CHX. Materials and Methods: Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was used to determine the chemical compositions of the oil. The disk diffusion method and a broth micro-dilution susceptibility assay were exploited to assess the antimicrobial efficacy against Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mitis, and Candida albicans. The cytocompatibility of the FGEO was assessed on L929 fibroblasts, and compared to that of NaOCl and CHX. Results: Twenty-seven constituents were recognized in FGEO. The major component of the oil was ${\beta}$-pinene (51.83%). All three irrigants significantly inhibited the growth of all examined microorganisms compared to the negative control group. FGEO at $50{\mu}g/mL$ was effective in lower concentration against Enterococcus faecalis than 5% NaOCl and 0.2% CHX, and was also more potent than 0.2% CHX against Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus. FGEO was a cytocompatible solution, and had significantly lower toxicity compared to 5% NaOCl and 0.2% CHX. Conclusions: FGEO showed a promising biological potency as a root canal disinfectant. More investigations are required on the effectiveness of this oil on intracanal bacterial biofilms.
