  • The growth of Calystegia japonica Choisy as affected by pH, drying, burial, soil moisture and light intensity was determined. Germination of C. japonica rhizome was not affected by pH's ranging from 4.8 to 8.7,while the greatest growth after germination was obtained at pH 5.7. Drying longer than 14 h at $35^{\circ}C$ brought about a significant reduction in percent survival and the subsequent growth of C. japonica. A significant decrease in growth of C. japonica occurred when the rhizome was buried at 0 ㎝ and deeper than 8 cm. The greatest growth was obtained when the soil moisture content reached 40 to 60% of saturated soil. Increasing percent available light resulted in decrease in the plant height, but increase in the root length and dry weight.

  • YIM, Kyong Bin (Coll. of Agriulture, Seoul National University) Effect of neutron and gamma irradiation on the germination of diploid and tetraploid rye seeds. Kor. Jour. Bot. VI(3):6-14, 1964. Tetraploid rye, Secale cereale 4x, was more tolerant to fast nuetron than diploid rye. Root growth was more suppressed than was seedling height in both diploid and tetraploid rye. A stimmulative effect on the dry weight of the shoot could be observed at very low doses of irradiation. It was the fact that the lower the moisture content of the seeds, the higher the radiosensitivity. Concerning seedling height growth, the effectiveness ratio of N/X equalled about 20.0 in diploid rye and about 18.2 in tettraploid rye, when the 50% dose ratios is used for this quotient calculaiton.

  • This study was carried out to indentify the mycorrhizal development and growth stimulation of Pinus thunbergii seedlings grown on soil growth media which mixed with various amounts of pine bark. The results were follow ; 1. Seedlings inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius were significantly increased in number of short roots and mycorrhizal short roots, height, maximum growth rate, and leaf area than those of no-inoculation. 2. Mycorrhizal formation according to bark contents was highest by 25% bark treatment, and decreased in 50 and 75% bark contents. 3. Within the same treatment of bark content, seedlings inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius showed more increased height and leaf, stem, and root dry weight than those of no-inoculated.

  • To verify allelopathic effects, seed germination and seedling growth test, chemical analysis and bioassay of selected species were carried out with naturally occurring chemicals of Artemisia capillaris. Seed germination ratio of Calamagrostis arundinacea. Youngia denticulata and Lactuca indica var. laciniata showed decrease in proportion to increase in aqueous extracts concentration of A. capillaris. while that of Cosmos bipinnatus and Leonurus sibiricus did not. However, dry weight growth of selected species treated with the same extracts as the above experiment was inhibited remarkably compared to the germination test. In the test at different concentrations of essential oil from A. capillaris, seedling growth of A. princeps var. orientalis and Plantago asiatica was suppressed according to the concentration of the essential oil, and root growth of the selected species was more inhibitory than that of shoot growth. Thirty-six chemical compounds were identified from A. capillaris plant by gas chromatography. Seven compounds out of 36 were bioassayed, and terpinen-4-ol was the most toxic among the tested substances.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of antagonistic microorganisms, Bacillus spp., on growth of alfalfa(Medicag0 sativa L.) in repeated cultivation soil(RCS) and unrepeated cultivation soil(URCS). Alfalfa was established by seeding into pots 12 cm in diameter and 9 cm in depth containing 1 : 1 mixture of soil and vermiculite with antagonistic bacteria and pathogenic fungi. The growth experiment of alfalfa was conducted in pots in a vinyl house. The bacteria used in this study were Bacillus subtilis and hsants. B. subtilis was isolated and identified 60m forage rhizosphere soil and hsants isolated through cell fusion fiom B. subtilis 101 and B. thuringiensis. B. subtilis was named B. subtilis 101 and hsants named F -3 and F -8. From dark culture experimenf alfalfa was longer lived in treated soil with antagonistic bacteria than that in non-treated soil, and longer lived in URCS than that in RCS. However, alfalfa was shorter lived in RCS and URCS than that in autoclaved RCS. The number of leaves of alfalfa were positively affected by the inoculation of the antagonistic bacteria in both RCS and URCS. Dry weight of shoot and root was increased by the inoculation of the antagonistic bacteria(P< 0.05). However, the growth of alfalfa was decreased by the inoculation of the pathogenic hngi both RCS apd URCS.

  • The growth and quality differences between common thyme(Thymus vulgaris L.) and lemon thym (Thymus$\times$citriodorus) were investigated. They were grown in a hydroponics culture system (DFT) with a nutrient solution developed by the European Vegetable R&D Center in Belgium. Nutrient solution ionic strength used were 1.2, 2.4, 4.8 and 7.2 mS.cm-1. The dry matter of two thymes were increased with increasing ionic strength, while shoot length, root length and fresh weight were decreased. Chlorophyll content was higher in lemon thyme, while vitamin C content and essential oil content were higher in common thyme. The essential oil content showed a similar trend as those of growth. The main compostion of essential oil were thymol and carvacrol in common thyme, and geraniol and $\alpha$-citral in lemon thyme. The highest content of these compounds was obtained in 1.2mS.cm-1 treatment. Consequently, the ionic strength of 1.2mS.cm-1 was suitable for the production of quality thymes.

  • Plant Regeneration via organogenesis from leaf disk of Korean dandelion was investigated. Leaf disk cultured on MS medium with various combinations of BA (0-4 mg/L) and 2,4-D (0-1 mg/L). Shoot regeneration from leaf explant was observed after 3 weeks of culture. The highest shoot regeneration frequency from leaf disk was obtained with 2 mg/L BA. To analyze the effect of leaf age along shoot formation, we measured number of shoots per explant, shooting rate, fresh and dry weight of leaf explant. The highest number of shoots (11.5) per explant were obtained leaf from 7 weeks old plantlets after seed germination. The regenerated shoots were transferred in 1/2 MS medium with 0.5 mg/L NAA for root formation. Regeneratied plantlets thought organogenesis were growing to whole plants in the pots with acclimation.

  • The present study was performed to identify the possibility of the disused paper-sludge to substitute an substrate for nursery plants. Tosilee substrate as control, paper-sludge and tosilee substrate (1:1, v:v), and paper sludge substate were used in this experiment. After harvesting tomato seedlings, there were no significant differences in growth parameters such as plant height, root length, and fresh and dry weight grown for tosilee substrate, and paper-sludge and tosilee mixture substrate. However, the seedlings grown for paper-sludge substrate alone were extremely depressed. These growth pattern was followed by cucumber seedlings. As the result of this experiment, we suggest that it must need to stabilize the pH and EC, and Zn concentration in paper-sludge for increasing its material for substrate.
