  • The groove rolling is a process that transforms the bloom or billet into a shape with circular section through a series of rolling. Inhibition of surface defect generation in groove rolling is a matter of great importance and therefore many research groups proposed a lot of models to find the location of surface defect initiation. In this study, we propose a model for maximum shear stress ratio over equivalent strain to catch the location of surface defect onset. This model is coupled with element removing method and applied to box groove rolling of POSCO No.3 Rod Mill. Results show that proposed model in this study can find the location of surface defect initiation during groove rolling when finite element analysis results is compared with experiments. The proposed criterion has been applied successfully to design roll grooves which inhibit the generation of surface defect.

  • Recently, PM-high speed steel(PM-HSS) has reportedly been a good alternative material for rolling mill because of its superior peformance to conventional HSS. This paper has been aimed to investigate the possibility for application to rolling contact element for PM-HSS by X-ray diffraction technique. The X-ray elastic constant for PM-HSS has been found by X-ray diffraction during the four-point bending test. Residual stress and half-value breadth on the contact surface during rolling contact fatigue process by X-ray diffraction have also been measured. The result of this study shows that the application of X-ray diffraction technique to PM-HSS could be as possible alternative material as conventional HSS. Half-value breadth on rolling contact surface by X-ray diffraction is not changed during rolling contact fatigue process. On the other hand, the residual stress is changed. This suggests that dislocation reaction has been hardly occurred in rolling contact, depending on supersaturated carbon in PM-HSS.

  • We propose a criterion which predicts wrinkle initiation on workpiece in groove rolling process based on finite element analysis. Fundamental idea introduced in the criterion is to examine the difference between flat rolling which don't' cause wrinkling at all and groove rolling which usually accompanies it. The proposed criterion assumes that irregular distribution of shear strain on workpiece during groove rolling is attributable to the initiation of wrinkling. The proposed criterion has been applied to roughing train in the rod and bar mill of SEAH BESTEEL Inc. A new design for 2nd pass (square roll groove) was suggested, machined and applied. Results reveal that the proposed criterion in this study could point out the location of wrinkle initiation during groove rolling and could reduce onset of wrinkle on final products.

  • Elongation rolling process is an intermediate process to make the uniform thickness and uniform surface roughness during producing seamless pipes. The thickness and surface roughness of seamless pipes are generally affected by the distance of rolls and guide shoes, the roll shape, and its cross angle. In this study, finite element analysis for shape forming process is based on the analysis model of elongation rolling mill with guide shoes. This paper shows how the cross angle of the roll, the rolling rpm, and the distance of the guide shoe influence on the outer diameter and the thickness of seamless pipes. The rolling rpm did not give much influence on outer diameter.

  • In order to investigate the evolution of strain states during screw rolling, the samples of pure copper rod were rolled in a three-roll screw rolling mill. Microstructure observations and hardness measurements were carried out for examining the deformation during screw rolling. In addition, the finite element method (FEM) was employed to calculate. The strain states reveal that the shear strain plays a dominant role in the deformation during screw rolling.

  • The looper control of hot strip finishing mill is one of the most important control item in hot strip rolling mill process. Loopers are placed between finishing mill stands and control the mass flow of the two stands. Another important action of the looper is to control the strip tension which influences on the width of the strip. So it is very important to control both the looper angle and the strip tension simultaneously but the looper angle and the strip tension are strongly interacted by each other. There are many control schemes such as conventional, non-interactive, LQ(Linear Quadratic), Hinf and ILQ(Inverse Linear Quadratic), Adaptive(gain scheduling) control in the looper control system. In this paper, we present the modeling for the looper of a hot strip finishing mill to control the tension of the strip and suggest another control method.

  • This study investigated Austenite Grain Size (AGS) distribution in Low-Speed Round-Oval Rolling. Rolling experiments were done along with the AGS numerical modeling to characterize the final AGS distribution and its kinetics behavior. For bar rolling experiment, we utilized the pilot rolling mill, operating at 34 fixed rpm, at POSCO Technical Research Laboratories. To investigate the microstructural observation, the rigid-viscoplastic finite element analysis was combined with Hodgson's AGS evolution model. To consider the transient thermal history in the integrative AGS modeling, additivity rule was introduced. The integrated analysis revealed that static or meta-dynamic recrystallization is responsible for the AGS difference in the inner or outer region of rolled bar. Comparative study showed that the current AGS modeling approach can be used to model the overall AGS distribution in bar rolling processes. For more accurate AGS prediction, the AGS modeling method should be verified under the various rolling conditions such as different rolling speeds and different deformations.

  • CB100 is one of the channel type products in the steel beam. In this study, rolling process of CB100 is analyzed by 3D FEM simulation and rolling process. FEM simulation result is compared with rolling process data. Also the intermediate & finishing roll stress analysis is carried out and the suitability of the roll through roll stress resultant analysis is evaluated. In order to decrease the roll stress, new pass schedule is developed for stable load balance between intermediate and finishing rolling stand. Therefore new rolling pass schedule is verified by the analysis results of rolling process and roll stress. By the analysis results, the credibility of rolling process analysis was obtained and it was determined that the possibility of roll damage between intermediate and finishing mill was high. So the new pass schedule was developed. Through the result of rolling process and roll stress analysis, it was obtained that the reduction of roll stress and stable load balance.

  • Flatness of cold rolled strip is vital to the quality of the product and productivity of the mill. Therefore, in recent year requirement for flatness control in strip rolling have become increasingly severe. The necessity for more accurate automatic gauge control and automatic flatness control(AFC) has increased by customer's requirement for cold rolled steel sheets with thinner gauge and better flatness quality. In this paper, the performance and functions of AFC system installed on the 4 hi-reversing mill has been investigated under actual conditions. The test results are as follows : The more strip thickness is thick, the smaller the I-value. The I-value is a strain measured by stressometer. Complex distributions of strip tension are controlled to remove not only a quarter buckle but also a simple center wave and edge wave. The defects caused by poor flatness have been drastically decreased. And a proper coolant temperature for work roll cooling system on the AFC system is about $50~55^{\circ}C$.
