This tutorial summarizes the coordinate transforms for formulating geophysical problems. To ensure mathematical consistency, this discussion begins with the right-hand rule. Further, the concepts of active and passive transforms are introduced. By extending these concepts, the coordinate transform and its inverse between two coordinates are related to the matrix transpose. The yaw-pitch-roll rotation and the azimuth-deviation-tool face rotation transforms are described as the most frequently used schemes, and the relation between the Rodrigues' rotation formula and these two transforms are mathematically explained. The "Gimbal Lock" problem inherent in yaw-pitch-roll rotation is schematically presented and mathematically derived. As a useful tool overcome this problem, the principle and usage of the quaternion is also described.

This paper describes the development of variable stability system (VSS) control laws for the KFA-i to simulate the dynamics of KFA-m aircraft. The KFA-i is a single engine, Class IV aircraft and was selected as an in-flight simulator (IFS) aircraft, whereas the KFA-m is a simulated aircraft that is based on the F-16 aircraft. A 6-DoF math model of KFA-i aircraft was developed, linearized, and separated into longitudinal and lateral motion for VSS control law synthesis. The KFA-i aircraft has five primary control surfaces: two flaperons, two all movable horizontal tails, and one rudder. Flaperons are used for load control, the horizontal tails are used for pitch and roll rate control, and the rudder is used for yaw rate control. The developed VSS control law can simulate four parameters of the KFA-m aircraft simultaneously, such as pitch, roll, yaw rates, and load. The simulation results show that KFA-i follows the responses of KFA-m with high accuracy.
An insect-like flapping-wing flying-robot should be able to produce flight forces and control moments at the same time only by flapping wings, because there is no control surface at tail just like an insect. In this paper, design principles for the flapping mechanism and control moment generator are briefly explained, characteristics measured force and moment generations of the robot are presented, and finally controlled flight of the flying robot is demonstrated. The present insect-like robot comprises a lightweight flapping mechanism that can produce a flapping angle larger than $180^{\circ}$ and a control moment generator that produces pitch, roll, and yaw moments by adjusting location of the trailing edges at the wing roots. The measured force and moment data show that the control input angles less than $9^{\circ}$ would not significantly reduce the vertical force generation. It is also observed that the pitch, roll, and yaw control moments are produced only by the corresponding control input. The simple PID control theory is used for the controlled flight of the flying robot, controlling pitch, roll, and yaw motions. The flying robot successfully demonstrated controlled flight for about 40 seconds.

This paper develops a computer model of a cabover type large truck for estimating the effects of the mounted method of frame on handling performance. The computer model considers two mounted methods of frame; flange mounted and web mounted. Frame is modeled by finite elements using MSC/NASTRAN in order to consider the flexibility of frame. The reliability of the developed computer model is verified by comparing the actual vehicle test results with the simulation results. The actual vehicle test is performed in a double lane change course, and lateral acceleration, yaw rate, and roll angle are measured. To estimate the effects of the mounted method of frame on handling performance, simulations are performed with the flange mounted and web mounted frame. Simulation results show that the web mounted frame's variations of roll angle, lateral acceleration, and yaw rate are larger than the flange mounted frame's variations, especially in the high test velocity and the second part of the double lane course. Also, simulation results show that the web mounted frame's tendencies of roll angle, lateral acceleration, and yaw rate advance the flange mounted frame's tendencies, especially in the high test velocity and the second part of the double lane course.

Active SAR satellite's main maneuver is roll axis maneuver to change SAR antenna direction. In addition, yaw steering is required to minimize the doppler centroid variation. Thus, it is resonable to assign the torque/momentum capacity mostly to roll axis and then yaw axis. In this case, the pitch axis shows low agility performance. However, due to orbit maintenance, large angle maneuver about pitch axis is sometimes required. In this paper, we study the pitch axis maneuver time reduction through sequential rotation about roll and yaw axis. Since these two axes have high agility performance than pitch axis, maneuver time reduction is possible when large angle rotation about pitch axis is required.
In this study the attitude control of the KOREASAT is investigated. The KOREASAT is a geostationary satellite and its 3 attitude angles, namely, roll, pitch and yaw angles, are stabilized by using the 3-axis stabilization technique. In the pitch control loop, the pitch attitude angle received from the earth sensor is processed in the attitude processing electronics by using PI type control logic, and the control command is sent to the momentum wheel assembly to generate the control torque by varying the wheel rate. The roll/yaw attitude control is performed by activating a magnetic torquer or by firing appropriate thrusters. The magnetic torquer interacts with the earth magnetic field to produce the control torque, and the thrusters are used to control the larger roll attitude errors. In this study dynamic modelling of the satellite is performed. And the earth sensor, the momentum wheel, and the magnetic torquer are mathematically modelled. The 3-axis attitude control logic is implemented to make the closed-loop system and simulations are carried out to verify the implemented control laws.
This paper describes a rollover index (RI)-based rollover mitigation control (RMC) system. A rollover index which indicates an impending rollover has been developed by a roll dynamics phase plane analysis. The rollover index is calculated using the roll angle, the roll rate, the lateral acceleration and time to wheel lift (TTWL). A differential braking control law based on a 2-D bicycle model has been designed using the direct yaw control (DYC) method. An RMC threshold has been determined from the rollover index. The performance of the RMC scheme and the effectiveness of the proposed rollover index are illustrated using a vehicle simulator.

This paper develops a 3 DOF vehicle model which includes lateral, roll and yaw motion to study a 4WS vehicle. The model is used for the simulation of a 4WS vehicle behavior, and to derive a control algorithm for rear wheel steering. This paper uses a feedforward plus feedback control scheme to compute a rear wheel steering angle. The feedforward control scheme for computing the first rear wheel steering angle uses a gain which is acquired by multiplying a proper value on a gain to maintain a zero sideslip angle. The feedback control scheme for computing the second rear wheel steering angle uses fuzzy logic and model following control scheme. A linear 2 DOF model is used as a reference model for model following control, and is derived from the developed 3 DOF model by neglecting sprung mass roll motion. A reference state variable is yaw rate, and is computed using the linear 2 DOF model. J-turn and lane change maneuver simulation are performed to show the effectiveness of the developed control scheme. The simulation results show that the 4WS vehicle with the developed control scheme has much better performance in yaw rate, lateral acceleration, roll angle, and sideslip angle than the 2WS vehicle. Also, the results show that the performance of the developed control is close to the one of an optimal control which assumes all states are perfect.

This paper proposes an attitude and direction control of a single wheel balanced robot. A unicycle robot is controlled by two independent control laws: the mobile inverted pendulum control method for pitch axis and the reaction wheel pendulum control method for roll axis. It is assumed that both roll dynamics and pitch dynamics are decoupled. Therefore the roll and pitch dynamics are obtained independently considering the interaction as disturbances to each other. Each control law is implemented by a controller separately. The unicycle robot has two DC motors to drive the disk for roll and to drive the wheel for pitch. Since there is no force to change the yaw direction, the present paper proposes a method for changing the yaw direction. The angle data are obtained by a fusion of a gyro sensor and an accelerometer. Experimental results show the performance of the controller and verify the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.

The tracked SUGVs(Small Unmanned Ground Vehicles) are frequently operated in the narrow slope such as stairs and trails. But due to the nature of the tracked vehicle which is steered using friction between the track and the ground and the limited field of view of driving cameras mounted on the lower position, it is not easy for SUGVs to trace narrow slopes. To properly trace inclined narrows, it is very important for SUGVs to keep it's heading direction to the slope. As a matter of factor, no roll value control of a SUGV can makes it's heading being located in the direction of the slope in general terrains. But, the problem is that we cannot directly control roll motion for SUGV. Instead we can control yaw motion. In this paper, a new slope driving method that enables the vehicle trace the narrow slopes with IMU sensor usually mounted in the SUGV is suggested which including an estimation technique of the desired yaw angle corresponding to zero roll angle. In addition, a fuzzy steering controller robust to changes in driving speed and the stair geometry is designed to simulate narrow slope driving with the suggested method. It is shown that the suggested method is quite effective through the simulation.
