An ectoparasitic din flagellate infesting plank tonic chaetognath, Sagitta crassa Tokioka was found, for the first time, from Korean coasts. In order to identify the species, we investigated detailed morphology of the din flagellate using Nomarski interference optics as well as epifluorescent microscopes. The parasitic din flagellate consists of an oval to rod-shaped cell with a peduncle, by which the organism attaches to the host. The cell is covered with polygonal thecal plates. The nucleus displays two different shapes according to cell cycle stages: in young trophont the nucleus is elongated and shows typical din flagellate nucleus (dinokaryon), while in matured trophont, the nucleus is dome-shaped and non-dinokaryotic. The peduncle is variable in length and is ornamented with the longitudinal striations. All these characteristics point to identity that the ectoparasitic din flagellate infecting Sagitta crassa in Korean coasts is Oodinium inlandicum Horiguchi et Ohtsuka, originally described from the Seto Inland Sea of Japan. Relationship between prevalence and host sizes differed from those in Japan.
Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)-based micro tubular SOFC single cells were fabricated by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) process. Stable slurries for the EPD process were prepared by adding phosphate ester (PE) as a dispersant in order to control the pH, conductivity, and zeta-potential. NiO-YSZ anode support, NiO-YSZ anode functional layer (AFL), and YSZ electrolyte were consecutively deposited on a graphite rod using the EPD process; materials were then co-sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 4 h. The thickness of the deposited layer increased with increasing of the applied voltage and the deposition time. A YSZ-based micro tubular single cell fabricated by the EPD process exhibited a maximum power density of $0.3W/cm^2$ at $750^{\circ}C$.
Although there are many potential cytotoxic molecules released from bacteria, the role of these molecules on the apoptosis of various cancer cells is not well understood. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is a Gram-negative, aerobic and rod-shaped bacterium, and has a number of virulence factors. To understand the cytotoxic effect of bacterial extracts on the colorectal cancer cell line, HCT 116 cells, we examined alteration of the cell viability, proliferation, cell cycle and apoptosis of HCT 116 cells after treatment with extract of P. aeruginosa (PaE). These cytotoxicity of PaE occurred in a time- and a dose-dependent manners. In addition, PaE arrested the cell cycle of HCT 116 cell in a time-dependent manner. PaE inhibited the protein levels of Bcl-2 and induced the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria of HCT 116 cells. The decrease of procaspase-3 was induced by the treatment of PaE. These results indicate that PaE has a cytotoxicity in HCT 116 cells via the induction of apoptosis associated with mitochondrial pathway. Therefore, PaE may used as the potential target for the treatment of colorectal cancer.

The objectives of this paper are: (1) to conduct the thermal analyses of the disposal cell using COMSOL Multiphysics; (2) to determine whether the design of the disposal cell satisfies the thermal design requirement; and (3) to evaluate the effect of design modifications on the temperature of the disposal cell. Specifically, the analysis incorporated a heterogeneous model of 236 fuel rod heat sources of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) to improve the reality of the modeling. In the reference case, the design, featuring 8 m between deposition holes and 30 m between deposition tunnels for 40 years of the SNF cooling time, did not meet the design requirement. For the first modified case, the designs with 9 m and 10 m between the deposition holes for the cooling time of 40 years and five spacings for 50 and 60 years were found to meet the requirement. For the second modified case, the designs with 35 m and 40 m between the deposition tunnels for 40 years, 25 m to 40 m for 50 years and five spacings for 60 years also met the requirement. This study contributes to the advancement of the thermal analysis technique of a disposal cell.

Electrolytic recovery of gold and silver from diluted solutions has at first been applied nearly 100 years ago. Compared with other recovery techniques electrolytic treatment offers several advantages. But to achieve high space-time yields special constructions of electrolytic cells for improved mass transfer are necessary. Ex-tended cathode surface areas and vigorous agitation are important features. Gold and silver recovery by use of newly developed electrolytic cell constructions - rotating tubular bed reactor and impact rod reactor - has been described. Calculations based on industrial application during several years are confirming that electrolytic recovery of precious metalss from diluted solutions has been operated in a very economic way.
Rod-shaped particle reinforced $LiAlO_2$ matrices for MCFC were fabricated by an aqueous tape-casting technique. The hydrolysis reaction and agglomeration of $\gamma-LiAlO_2$ particles in aqueous slurries were inhibited by additions of $LiOH{\cdot}H_2O$ and glycerin to the aqueous $\gamma-LiAlO_2$ slurry. The tape-casting, performed using the aqueous slurry containing protein albumin, was fast and led to an effective drying at casting temperature range of $60{\sim}65^{\circ}C$. The strength of the particle reinforced matrix was improved about 4 times compared to that of matrix without reinforcement. Pore size distribution ($0.1{\sim}0.4{\mu}m$) and porosity ($50{\sim}60%$) of the reinforced matrices were determined to be appropriate for the MCFC matrix. The aqueous tape casting process is not only environmental-friendly but also efficient for fabricating MCFC matrices compared to non-aqueous tape casting.

The ultrastructure of germ cells during spermatogenesis and some characteristics of sperm morphology in male Mytilus coruscus, which was collected on the coastal waters of Gyeokpo in western Korea, were investigated by transmission electron microscope observations. The morphology of the spermatozoon has a primitive type and is similar to those of other bivalves in that it contains a short midpiece with five mitochondria surrounding the centrioles. The morphologies of the sperm nucleus type and the acrosome shape of this species have an oval and modified cone shape, respectively. In particular, the axial rod is observed between the nucleus and acrosome of the sperm. The spermatozoon is approximately $45-50{\mu}m$ in length including a sperm nucleus (about $1.46{\mu}m$ in length), an acrosome (about $3.94{\mu}m$ in length) and tail flagellum (approximately $40-45{\mu}m$). The axoneme of the sperm tail flagellum consists of nine pairs of microtubules at the periphery and a pair at the center. The axoneme of the sperm tail shows a 9+2 structure. Some special charateristics of sperm morphology of this species in the genus Mytilus are (1) acrosomal morphology, (2) the number of mitochondria in the midpiece of the sperm, and (3) the existence of a satellite. The axial rod appears in the acrosome and sperm nucleus as one of the characteristics seen in several species of the subclass Pteriomorphia, unlikely the subclass Heterodonta containing axial filament instead of the axial rod. The number of mitochondria in the midpiece of the sperm of this species in the family Mytilidae are five, as one of common characteristics appeared in most species in the family Mytilidae. Most of Mytilus species contain a satellite body which is attached to the proximal centriole in the middle piece of the sperm, as one of common characteristics of sperm morphology in the family Mytilidae.

Oligotrophic bacteria isolated from forest soil showed a specific community consisting of various taxonomic groups compared with those in other soil or aquatic habitats. Based on the cell shape, the isolates were divided into four groups: regular rod, curved/spiral rod, irregular rod, and prosthecate bacteria. The cellular fatty acids 60 oligotrophic isolates were analyzed. The 30 fatty acids which were identified or characterized are classified. At the dendrogram based on cellular fatty acid composition, four clusters(I-IV) were separated at a euclidian distance of about 50. Cluster 3 and 4-a strains were containing Q-8, these strains are accommodated in the Proteobacteria gamma and beta subdivision. The chemotaxonomic profiles of the cluster 4-a strains showed good agreement with those of the genus Burkholderia. Cluster 3 was characterized by the presence of branched-chain fatty acids, iso-C15:0, iso-C17:1, and iso-C17:0 as the major components. These chemotaxonomy suggested the close relationship of the isolates with Xathomonas/Sterotrophomonas group. Based on the 16S rDNA sequence analysis, the two representative strains(MH256 and MA828) of cluster 3 showed the close relation to genera, Xathomonas/Sterotrophomonas, but were not included in these genera. These strains were even further away from core Xanthomonas, and clearly were seen to branch outside the cluster formed by the Sterotrophomonas maltophilia. MH256 and MA828 16S rDNA sequence was different enough to put new genus on a separate branch. The isolates with Q-10 were also studied. They are corresponded to the two large groups in Proteobacteria alpha subdivision. One was incorporated in the genus Bradyrhizobium cluster, which also includes Agromonas, a genus for oligotrophic bacteria. The strains of the other group showed high similarity to the genus Agrobacterium.

Background: Periodontitis is generally a chronic disorder characterized by the breakdown of tooth-supporting tissues. P. gingivalis, a Gram-negative anaerobic rod, is one of the major pathogens associated with periodontitis. Frequently, P. gingivalis infection leads to cell death. However, the correlation between P. gingivalis-induced cell death and periodontal inflammation remains to be elucidated. Among cell deaths, the death of immune cells appears to play a significant role in inflammatory response. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine P. gingivalis-induced cell death, focusing on autophagy and apoptosis in THP-1 cells. Methods: Human acute monocytic leukemia cell line (THP-1) was used for all experiments. Autophagy induced by P. gingivalis in THP-1 cells was examined by Cyto ID staining. Intracellular autophagic vacuoles were observed by fluorescence microscopy using staining Acridine orange (AO); and 3-methyladenine (3-MA) was used to inhibit autophagy. Total cell death was measured by LDH assay. Cytokine production was measured by an ELISA method. Results: P. gingivalis induced autophagy in an MOI-dependent manner in THP-1 cells, but 3-MA treatment decreased autophagy and increased the apoptotic blebs. P. gingivalis infection did not increase apoptosis compared to the control cells, whereas inhibition of autophagy by 3-MA significantly increased apoptosis in P. gingivalis-infected THP-1 cells. Inhibition of autophagy by 3-MA also increased total cell deaths and inflammatory cytokine production, including $IL-1{\beta}$ and $TNF-{\alpha}$. Conclusion: P. gingivalis induced autophagy in THP-1 cells, but the inhibition of autophagy by 3-MA stimulated apoptosis, leading to increased cell deaths and pro-inflammatory cytokines production. Hence, the modulation of cell deaths may provide a mechanism to fight against invading microorganisms in host cells and could be a promising way to control inflammation.
