  • A conceptual design is carried out for a two-stage scramjet cruise vehicle flying at Mach 4 to investigate its feasibility. The design goal is to deliver a payload of 225 kg and to fly a range of about 500 km. It is accelerated to its cruising speed by the first stage using a solid rocket of 52.9 kN thrust 3.59 m in length. The second stage cruises using a kerosene-burning scramjet engine of 6.85 kN thrust, the vehicle being 7.55 m in length and 508 mm in width. The vehicle has a take-off weight of 2.1 tons, flies 500 km in 6 minutes at 17 km altitude.

  • Combustion instability has been considered as very important issue for developing gas turbine and rocket engine. There is a need for fundamental understanding of combustion instability. In this study, combustion instability was numerically and experimentally investigated in a dump combustor with bluff body. The fuel and air mixture had overall equivalence ratio of 0.9 and was injected toward dump combustor. The pressure oscillation with approximately 256Hz was experimentally obtained. For numerical simulation, the standard k-$\varepsilon$ model was used for turbulence and the hybrid combustion model (eddy dissipation model and kinetically controlled model) was applied. After calculating steady solution, unsteady calculation was performed with forcing small perturbation on initial that solution. Pressure amplitude and frequency measured by pressure sensor is nearly the same as those predicted by numerical simulation. Furthermore, it is clear that a combustion instability involving vortex shedding is affected by acoustic-vortex-combustion interaction. The phase difference between the pressure and velocity is $\pi$/2, and that between the pressure and heat release rate is in excitation range described by Rayleigh, which is obvious that combustion instability for the bluff body combustor meets thermoacoustic instability criterion.

  • "Backhole" is a new geometric parameter and is defined as an extra empty volume which is located behind the tangential entries at the rear part of the vortex chamber in the swirl injector. Backhole makes a difference to the spray characteristics of swirl injectors such as the spray angle, SMD, the mixing characteristics and so on. To find its characteristics, experiments are conducted by using a stroboscopic photography, a PDPA apparatus and a mechanical patternator. With the backhole, the mass flow rate of the swirl injector is increased and the center region of the injected flow has more large volume than that of without the backhole. Also the cone angle can be controlled by the backhole, so that the mixing efficiencies of swirl injectors are changed. Based on cold-flow tests, the swirl injector with the backhole may improve its performance.rformance.

  • A performance evaluation is made in terms of thrust, impulse bit. and specific impulses for a set of mono-propellant hydrazine thrusters producing 0.95 lbf of nominal thrust at an inlet pressure of 350 psia. With a brief description on the hot-firing test configuration and procedures. a typical data obtained from steady-state firing mode is given directly showing the variational behavior of propellant supply pressure, mass flow rate, vacuum condition, and thrust. The performance features are successfully compared to the reference criteria of 1-lbf standard mono-propellant rocket engine. Additionally. a statistical inter-thruster treatment is concisely depicted for the justification of selected thrusters as a grouped member of flight model for spacecraft propulsion system.

  • In this paper a method for finding solutions of acoustic, vortex and entropy wave equations in a cylindrical tube with variable section area was suggested under the consideration of that the high frequency instability in a rocket engine combustion chamber is an acoustic phenomena, which Is coupled with combustion reaction. and that a combustion chamber and exhaust nozzle are usually shaped cylindrically As a consequence of that some method. which enable the mathematical analysis of the influence of entropy and vortex waves to acoustic wave. was suggested. According to the method reflection coefficients of acoustic wave on a supercritical nozzle was numerically calculated, through which it was presented that entropy or vortex waves can strengthen or weaken the reflection rate of acoustic wave.

  • In the regeneratively cooled combustion chambers of liquid rocket engine using hydrocarbon fuels, coking occurs as the wall temperature increases which results in compounds deposition on the wall of cooling channels. This phenomenon reduces cooling capability of the coolant which finally causes damage to the combustor by overheating of the chamber wall. In this paper, experiment results using an electrical heating equipment to simulate the regeneratively cooled channel are introduced and based on the results the compatibility of copper alloy with hydrocarbon fuel Jet A-1 is investigated.

  • It has been studied the effect of mixture ratio and chamber pressure on variations of discharge coefficients. Combustion experiments of bi-liquid swirl coaxial injectors were conducted at fuel-rich conditions with liquid oxygen and kerosene. Using two types of injectors for the experiments, characteristics of the discharge coefficient have been identified from variations in a diameter of the fuel nozzle and a momentum ratio along with the change of a LOx spray angle. It is concluded that discharge coefficients do not vary because of no change of flame structures from the fact that the fuel swirl chamber is completely filled up with fuel flow.

  • In the leakage test of a Main Oxidizer shut-off valve, gas leakage was found on the middle flange with a metal conical seal. The structural analysis was performed for three models with different numbers of bolts and flange shapes and then one model was selected in consideration of the minimum axial gap deformation as well as the weight increment due to the change of flange shapes. Experimental leakage tests for the simulated flanges of the selected model has resulted in no gas leakage, and consequently the structural analysis method for the design of the middle flanges has proved feasible.
