  • In this study, the field density test was conducted as a volume conversion factor for the design of the excavation soil of the blasting rock. As a result of the field density test, the average volume conversion factor of rock was 1.001, which was smaller than the volume conversion factor of weathered rock 1.1. In the case of rock filled soil, the causes of the increase and decrease of the volume of the soil are provided by various phenomena. However, the specific techniques such as investigation and test methods are insufficient. Therefore, it was confirmed that the method of field density test is very useful method.

  • A novel boundary stress resolution method is suggested in this paper, which is based upon the displacements of finite element analysis and of high precision with stress boundary condition strictly satisfied. The method is used to modify the Zienkiewicz-Zhu ($Z^2$) a posteriori error estimator and for the h-version adaptive finite element analysis of crack problems. Successful results are obtained.

  • There are lots of tunnel intervals in the KTX II stage construction line for the linearity of railway line passing mountain region. In order to use the rocks from tunnel excavations, railway subgrades are constructed with crushed rock-soil mixtures. In this study, plain strain test using large scale box was conducted in order to analyze the characteristics of deformation behavior of railway subgrades composed of crushed rock-soil mixtures. The effects of variation of degree of saturation, stress level of applied loadings, and number of loading cycles on the resilient and permanent deformation behavior were analyzed. The results show that degree of saturation have a great effect on the deformation behavior of crushed rock-soil mixtures. The axial strain ranges between $0.1{\sim}0.8%$ with variation of degree of saturation, in assumption that deviatoric stress applied on the subgrade by high-speed train load is 55kPa.

  • The quasi-static finite element (FE) approaches are widely used for the seismic analysis of tunnels. However, the conventional quasi-static approaches may cause significant deviations when the tunnel excavation process is simulated prior to the quasi-static analysis. In addition, they cannot account for vertical excitations. Therefore, this paper first highlights the limitations of conventional approaches. A hybrid quasi-static FE approach is subsequently proposed and extensively validated for various conditions. The hybrid approach is simple and not time consuming, and it can be used for the preliminary seismic design of tunnels, especially when the tunnel excavation and vertically propagating P-waves are considered.

  • The effect of phosphate solubilizing microbes (PSM) on plant P uptake and growth in rock phosphate applied soil was tested under a greenhouse condition. Tobacco plants were grown in nonsterilized soil inoculated with Penicillium oxalicum CBPS-3F-Tsa with or without rock phosphate application as P fertilizer. Phosphorus concentration in tobacco plants was increased by the application of rock phosphate, while inoculation of soil with fungi further significantly increased P concentration in tobacco plants compared with the noninoculated treatments. Phosphorus uptake by tobacco plants was also increased by the application of rock phosphate and PSM inoculation, and the significant comparison has been made with single rock phosphate treatment. Growth of tobacco plant was also significantly increased in the treatments receiving rock phosphate, while the combined application of rock phosphate and PSM further increased plant growth. It was concluded that the positive effect of PSM inoculation on plant growth was closely related in plant P content and uptake. These results suggest that Penicillium oxalicum CBPS-3F-Tsa could solubilize insoluble soil phosphates and rock phosphate which can promote growth and P uptake of tobacco plants.

  • To add new groundwater standard, 7 candidate materials (copper, zinc, selenium, manganese, iron, chromium, aluminum) were calculated by CROWN (Chemical Ranking Of groundwater pollutaNts). Copper and zinc were selected as groundwater candidates through the process and monitored total 430 samples for 2 years with 113 groundwater sampling sites. In this study, geological distribution characteristics (igneous rock, metamorphic rock, sedimentary rock) of copper and zinc were evaluated and the geological background levels obtained by a cumulative probability distribution and pre-selection methods were compared. In the results, the highest average concentrations of the copper and zinc were observed both in the igneous rock. The detection concentration ranges of copper and zinc in 430 groundwater samples were $0.002{\sim}0.931mg\;L^{-1}$, and $0.002{\sim}32.293mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. In addition, detection concentration ranges of copper and zinc were $0.002{\sim}0.931mg\;L^{-1}$, $0.002{\sim}32.293mg\;L^{-1}$ in the igneous rock, $0.002{\sim}0.134mg\;L^{-1}$, $0.004{\sim}7.038mg\;L^{-1}$ in the metamorphic rock and $0.002{\sim}0.008mg\;L^{-1}$, $0.003{\sim}3.948mg\;L^{-1}$ in the sedimentary rock, respectively. As a result of the background concentrations with two methods, zinc concentrations with the pre-selected method are comparatively higher than that of the others with the cumulative distribution.

  • Due to the enormous amount of fills required, broken rock-fine grain soil mixtures have been increasingly used in the construction of high-fill foundations for airports, railways and highways in the mountain areas of western China. However, the compressibility behavior of those broken rock-fine grain soil mixtures remains unknown, which impose great uncertainties for the performance of those high-fill foundations. In this research, the mixture of broken limestone and a fine grain soil, Douposi soil, is studied. Large oedometer tests have been performed on specimens with different soil content. This research reveals the significant influence of fine grains on the compressibility of the mixture, including immediate settlement, creep, as well as wetting deformation.

  • To establish new metal groundwater standard, 5 metals such as aluminum, chromium, iron, manganese, and selenium were evaluated by Chemical Ranking Of groundWater pollutaNts (CROWN) including possibility of exposure, toxicity, interest factor, connection standard for other media, and data reliability. 430 groundwater samples in 2013 and 2014 were collected semiannually from 110 groundwater wells and they were analyzed for selenium, manganese, iron, chromium, and aluminum. For this study, 430 groundwater samples were categorized into 3 geological distribution features, such as igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock region and geological background levels were divided by pre-selection methods. For the results, the average concentrations of aluminum, chromium, iron, manganese, and selenium in 430 groundwater samples were $0.0008mg\;L^{-1}$, $0.0001mg\;L^{-1}$, $0.174mg\;L^{-1}$, $0.083mg\;L^{-1}$, and $0.0004mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. In addition, among various geologies, average concentration of selenium was the highest in igneous rock region, average concentrations of chromium, manganese and aluminum were the greatest in sedimentary rock region, and average concentration of iron was the most high in metamorphic rock region. As a result of the geological background concentration with pre-selection method, background concentrations of selenium and aluminum in groundwater samples were the highest from sedimentary rock as $0.0010mg\;L^{-1}$ and $0.0029mg\;L^{-1}$ and background concentrations of manganese and iron in groundwater samples were the greatest from metamorphic rock as $0.460mg\;L^{-1}$ and $1.574mg\;L^{-1}$, and no chromium background concentration in groundwater samples was found from all geology.

  • Field and laboratory tests were performed to investigate the swelling(L value) and shrinkage modulus (C value) of soil and rock mixtures using 2 sites. According to test results, when disturbed soil and rock were mixed with same amount (5:5), the maximum density was achieved and showed 19% and 18% increased at each site comparing with the unit weight of rock only. Since measured L values of mixtures were overestimated about 4 to 11% compare to estimated values based on the conventional method. While C values were underestimated about 13~20% compare to conventional values due to the development of compacting equipments and effective construction management. When rock and soil were mixed in the ratio of 5 to 5, the unit weight of the mixture was higher than that of other mixtures and rock or soil only.

  • Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is extensively discussed as a promising topic for ground stabilization. The practical effect of stabilizing the expansive soil is presented in this paper with a logical process from the bacterial activity to the treatment technology. Temperature, pH, shaking frequency, and inoculation amount are discussed to evaluate the bacterial activity. The physic-mechanic properties are also evaluated to discuss the effect of the MICP process on expansive soil. Results indicate that the MICP method achieves the mitigation of expansion. The treated soil has a low proportion of fine particles (< 5 ㎛), the plasticity index significantly decreases, and strength values improve much. MICP process has a significant cementation effect on the soil matrix. Moreover, the infiltration model test presents the coating effect on the topsoil. According to the relation between the CaCO3 content and the treatment effect, the topsoil has better treatment than the deeper soil.
