  • In this case study, I examined the microseismic safety management system of Deep Heat Mining Basel (DHMB) as EGS Geothermal Project which was conducted in Basel, Switzerland. EGS Geothermal Power projects which require induced seismic event by stimulation for creation of EGS geothermal reservoir have to be controlled pressure and flow rate of stimulation by establishment of microseismic safety management system. Traffic light system and Communication response procedure of DHMB project to respond step by step corresponding microseismic event intensity through continuous monitoring during stimulation period have been managed and established in advance of stimulation. However, the project was discontinued because of an earthquake to occur larger than expected one due to post-injection seismicity occurring in the geothermal reservoir after completion of injection for stimulation. The result of post analysis, Real-time traffic light system was verified to need a establishment of new microseismic safe management system to be considered post-injection seismicity phenomenon.

  • Various experiences on enhanced geothermal system (EGS) has been accumulated from the Soultz project through various scientific experiments and research activities for more than 20 years since it started in the year of 1984 until the 1.5 MW Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) binary power plant has been built up in Soultz-sous-$\hat{e}$ area, France. They have been applied to Cooper basin in Australia, Landau and Insheim in Germany and so forth. This report summaries the experiences from Soultz in the aspect of artificial reservoir creation, expecting to be helpful for reducing any trial and errors or unnecessary expenses in ongoing Korean EGS project in Pohang area, where the geological features are similar to Soultz area.

  • Fluctuations in groundwater level are the major cause of ground subsidence in the abandoned limestone mine. In this study, evaluation of groundwater flow under three different cases of natural condition, aggregate-filling, temporary drainage in groundwater-saturated limestone mine cavities was executed by 3-dimensional analysis. In the case of aggregate-filling, although the water level both in the upper ground of mine cavities and an agricultural watershed was elevated, it was lower than the water level fluctuation of an agricultural water use and rainfall and the flow rate was similar to the flow rate of natural condition. In the case of temporary drainage, as the water level in the upper ground of mine cavities and an agricultural watershed decrease rapidly and the flow rate has increased by 25times, so the risk of ground subsidence increased.

  • This study introduces the current status of the design for safety(DfS) introduced as one of the owner - centered construction site safety management plan, and presents the problems and the improvement plan. The design for safety has been shifting from the construction management-oriented safety management to the owner-centered safety management system, The owner has to make the design considering the safety from the design stage centered on the owner. The owner has to review and approve the adequacy of the safety-conscious design and The risk factors that can not be eliminated during design are the system to prevent the disaster at the construction site by planning to eliminate the risk factor when writing the safety management plan that is made at the construction stage. The design for safety system implemented from May 2016 will be further developed to prevent the risk of safety accidents that may occur in construction sites, contributing greatly to the reduction of construction accident. In addition, it suggests ways to develop more efficient and convenient system through continuous hazard finding and system improvement.

  • This study describes a precise numerical analysis process by adopting the real image of mine openings obtained by LIDAR, which can produce a point cloud data by measuring the target surface numerically. Research area is a section of underground limestone mine which is used hybrid room-and-pillar method for improving the production rate. From the application of LIDAR to this section several results were deduced, that is, the central axis of upper and lower vertical safety pillars is distorted to the direction of NW and the section area of lower vertical safety pillar is $34m^2$ smaller than the designed area of $100m^2$. The results of precise measurement in geometrical shape of mine openings and precise simulation in numerical analysis confirms that LIDAR techniques can be suggested as a valuable tool for stability analysis in underground mine by configuring the mine opening shape.

  • The mine subsidence prevention technology has been promoted based on the field test for design, construction, automation measurement and monitoring optimized for investigation, design and mine-filling efficiency customized in Korean mining environment. Based on the R&D roadmap ('07~'16) of the 1st and 2nd stage, mine reclamation technology development has been focused on developing method of evaluating subsidence stability, development of filling material and optimum filling technology, and development of measuring instrument. In the future, in order to systematic management for the subsidence risk areas, we intend to enhance technological capabilities and strengthen the technological infrastructure for business promotion in parallel with the discovery and introduction of new technology to prevent subsidence in the 4th Industrial Revolution era.

  • Recently, road cave-ins, also referred to as ground sinking, have become a problem in urban environments. Public utility facilities such as sewage pipelines, communications pipes, gas pipes, power cables, and other types of underground structures are installed below the roads. It was reported that cave-ins are caused by the aging and lack of proper maintenance of underground facilities, as well as by construction problems. A road cave-in is first initiated by the formation of cavities typically induced by the breakage of underground pipelines. The cavities then grow and reach the base of the pavement. The traffic load applied at the surface of the roads causes an abrupt plastic deformation. This type of accident can be considered as a type of disaster. A road cave-in can threaten both human safety and the economy. It may even result in the loss of human life. In the city of Seoul, efforts to prevent damage before cave-ins occur have been prioritized, through a method of discovering and repairing joints through the 3D GPR survey.

  • As the development of IT technology, the way to manage the underground construction site in real time using wireless network communication is being considered. Underground space is limited area compared to the ground site due to the enclosed communication environment and spatial characteristics. BMN (Bluetooth Mesh Networking) technology is a recently introduced wireless communication technology that bluetooth device acts as a repeater to form a networking mesh and monitor individual devices. This article examines the areas to be considered for analyzing the applicability of BMN technology to underground spaces, and the cases studies of wireless communication monitoring systems currently being developed. And the BMN technology which is being developed for the underground application is also introduced.

  • Because of the slope failure, not only property damage but also human damage can occur, slope stability analysis should be conducted to predict and reinforce of the slope. This paper, defines the ground areas that can be characterized in terms of slope failure such as Rockmass jointset, Rockmass fault, Soil, Leakage water and Crush zone in sloped images. As a result, it was shown that the deep learning instance segmentation network can be used to recognize and automatically segment the precise shape of the ground region with different characteristics shown in the image. It showed the possibility of supporting the slope mapping work and automatically calculating the ground characteristics information of slopes necessary for decision making such as slope reinforcement.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop rail rockfall and landslide information system to manage spatial database using GIS. For this, a spatial database containing information such as railroad, map, topographic analysis, meteorological data, and rockfall has been constructed for 2.5 km or 5 km buffer zone from the Kyungchun, Youngdong, Jungang, Taebak and Jungsun Rairoad where risk of landslide occurrence potential is high. For management of the spatial database, railroad rockfall and landslide information system has been developed. The information system consists of view, table, chart, layout and project environment. The functions provided in the system are data conversion, editing, labeling, zoom in and out, map making, graphic editing, text DB management, charting, on-line help as well as input, retrieve and output of spatial database. The system was developed using ArcView script language Avenue, and consisted of pull-down menus and icons for easy use. The spatial database and the information system can be used to rockfall and landslide management and analysis near the railroad as basic data and tool.
