  • To design high quality products at low cost is one of very important tasks for engineers. Design optimization for performances can be one solution in this task. There is the robust design which has been proved effectively in many fields of engineering design. In this paper, the concept of robust design is introduced and combined to the fuzzy optimization method and the fuzzy logic system method with non-singleton. These methods are applied for data analysis to get optimum parameters and to reduce experiments. The optimum parameter set points are obtained by the proposed methods. These methods are applied to a filter circuit, a part of the audio circuit of mobile radio transceiver. The simulation results are compared each other. The new methods reduce and predict the effect of parameter variation sources

A Study on Implementation of Powerline Carrier Modem using 5-ary Frequency Shift Keying Method (5-ary 주파수 천이 키잉 방식을 이용한 전력선 캐리어 모뎀 구현에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we use the 5-ary frequency shift keying method for robust powerline communication. To transmit the data by the 3-ary carrires among 5-ary carrirers and three carriers are 115kHz, 120kHz and 125kHz. Each time of three carrires is 0.33ms and total transmitting time duration from zero crossing point has 1ms. We use the dummy carriers which are 50kHz and 350kHz for monitoring the powerline channel state, dummy signal duration is received during 1ms. Experimentation result is shown that the implemented PLC transceiver has better than chirp transceiver at the capacitive load testing in spite of low transmission power.

  • This paper shows a practical approach that is robust to the errors causing path-delay in mobile wireless location, and analyzes its performance by comparing with other methods. NLOS(non-line-of-sight) error and multipath are two big sources of positioning error in wireless location. Contrary to GPS(global positioning system), they result from the terrestrial propagation of a signal. Especially, since LOS(line-of-sight) path between a transceiver and a receiver is blocked by intermediate buildings and topography, NLOS causes a signal to be reflected and diffracted.   • This paper presents a IR-UWB(Impulse Radio Ultra-Wide Band) transceiver circuit for data communication and real time location system. The UWB receiver is designed to OOK(On-Off Keying) modulation for energy detection. The UWB pulse generator is designed by digital logic. And the Gaussian filter is adopted to reject side lobe in transmitter. The measured sensitivity of the receiver is -65 dBm at 4 GHz with 1 Mbps PRF(Pulse Repetition Frequency). And the measured energy efficiency per pulse is 20.6 pJ/bit. The current consumption of the receiver and transmitter including DA is 27.5 mA and 25.5 mA, respectively, at 1.8 V supply.

  • In the parer, we design a non-coherent UWB system by adopting the architecture of a simplified asynchronous transmission and the edge-triggered pulse transmission, which makes e system performance independent of the share of the transmitted waveform, robust to multipath channels. The designed non-coherent UWB transceiver architecture has an advantage of the simple realization since any mixer, high-speed correlator, and high-sampling A/D converter are not necessary at the cost of performance degradation of about 3dB. Further, the designed non-coherent UWB transceiver is actually implemented with the wireless CANVAS prototype testbed in short range indoor application environments such as a lecture room. The implemented prototype testbed is proven to offer the data rate of 115kbps on the conditions of Peer-to-Peer(P-to-P) in the indoor channel within the range of about 10m.

A Study on the White LED-based Underwater and Surface-to-Underwater Optical Wireless Communication Systems (백색 LED 기반 수중 및 수상-수중 간 광무선 통신시스템 연구)

  • In this paper, we present surface-to-underwater visible light communication systems using white LEDs. Pulse position modulation (PPM)-based analogue data communications and on-off keying-based digital data communications systems are developed. Inexpensive and commercial power-LEDs and photo-diodes are used to construct two types of systems. We report the experimental results obtained from the prototype systems to show the possibility of an optical underwater visible light transceiver as a basis for short range underwater wireless network. Their performance deteriorates more than the atmosphere's one because of attenuation and scattering of the light in water, but these results are promising for the potential to create more robust network interface that improve medium performance such as a LED modulation and a photo-detector demodulation.

Formation of Mobile Robots with Inaccurate Sensor Information

  • This paper develops a control method for some generic formation tasks of multiple mobile robots with inaccurate sensor information. Inaccurate sensor information means that all the robots have only local sensors that cannot accurately measure absolute distances and directions of objects. That is, all the sensors have limitation on the range, and uncertainty in the values. Therefore, more robust and reliable control logic is proposed and implemented. The logic is developed considering generic situations and increasing the number of robots participating in the formation. Petri nets are used for modeling and design of the control logic, which can visualize the control models and make it easy to check the states of each robot. Physically homogeneous mobile robots are designed and built to evaluate the developed logic. Each robot is equipped with eighteen infrared sensors and a UHF transceiver module. The experiment results are analyzed quantitatively by using the data of the relative distances and angles between the robots. And the trajectories of the robots during the formation are also evaluated. The developed control approach is demonstrated with experiments to be successful and efficient for the formation of autonomous mobile robots.

  • In this paper, the modem based on EIA-709.2-A PL of powerline communication techniques which are considered to be important technologies for in-home control network systems was implemented via VHDL. In order to have the robust properties against existing noises over powerline channels, the information data using eight symbols was transmitted by transmitter and the receiver is composed of matched filter, averager, decision and detection parts in order to detect the right data from the received signals. The implemented PLC transceiver was downloaded into Altera's EP1S25C672 FPGA and the operation was verified successfully.

Transmission Characteristics of Indoor Infrared Diffuse Links Employing Three-Beam Optical Transmitters and Non-Imaging Receivers

  • Diffuse wireless optical communication offers more robust optical links in terms of coverage and shadowing than line-of-sight links. However, traditional diffuse wireless infrared (IR) transceiver systems are more susceptible to multi-path distortion and great power decrease, which results in limiting high-speed performance. Multi-beam is an effective technique to compensate for multi-path distortion in a wireless infrared environment. The goal of this paper is to analyze the transmission characteristics by replacing traditional diffuse system (TDS) which contains single wide angle transmitter and single element receiver by system consisting of three-beam transmitter and non-imaging receiver (TNS) attached with compound parabolic concentrator (CPC). In the simulation, we use the recursive model developed by Barry and Kahn and build the scenario based on 10 different cases which have been listed in Table 1. Moreover, we also check the reliability of the TNS diffuse link channel by BER test on the basis of different receiver positions and room sizes. The simulation results not only show the basic transmission characteristics of TNS diffuse link, but also are references to design more efficient and reliable indoor infrared transmission systems.

  • The underwater channel is known to offer poor communications channel. The channel medium is highly absorptive and the transmission bandwidth is limited. In addition, the channel is highly frequency selective; the degree of selectiveness depends on a detailed geometry of the channel. Furthermore, the response changes over time as the channel conditions affecting the response such as water temperature, sea surface wind and salinity are time-varying. The transceiver design to deal with the frequency and time selective channel, therefore, becomes very challenging. It has been known that deep fading at certain specific sub-carriers are detrimental to OFDM systems. To mitigate this negative effect, the proposed coded OFDM system employs an LDPC code based modulation. In this paper, we aim 1) to provide a detailed underwater channel model; 2) to design a robust LDPC coded OFDM system; 3) to test the proposed system under a variety of channel conditions enabled by the channel model.
