  • In order to enhance dexterity in execution of robot tasks, a redundant number of degrees-of-freedom (DOF) is adopted for design of robotic mechanisms like robot arms and multi-fingered robot hands. Associated with such redundancy in the number of DOFs relative to the number of physical variables necessary and sufficient for description of a given task, an extra performance index is introduced for controlling such a redundant robot in order to avoid arising of an ill-posed problem of inverse kinematics from the task space to the joint space. This paper shows that such an ill-posedness of DOF redundancy can be resolved in a natural way by using a novel concept named “stability on a manifold”. To show this, two illustrative robot tasks 1) robotic handwriting and 2) control of an object posture via rolling contact by a multi-DOF finger are analyzed in details.

  • This paper deals with the emotional model of the software-robot. The software-robot requires several capabilities such as sensing, perceiving, acting, communicating, and surviving. and so on. There are already many studies about the emotional model like KISMET and AIBO. The new emotional model using the modified friendship scheme is proposed in this paper. Quite often, the available emotional models have time invariant human respond architectures. Conventional emotional models make the sociable robot get around with humans, and obey human commands during robot operation. This behavior makes the robot very different from real pets. Similar to real pets, the proposed emotional model with the modified friendship capability has time varying property depending on interaction between human and robot.

  • This paper describes the path planning of an autonomous mobile robot using one camera-based sequence image processing. As an assumption, all objects in front of the mobile robot are located on the same plane where robot moves. Using the moving camera grounded on the autonomous mobile robot, the robot extracts the angular points of obstacle objects, calculates the height using the assumption and discrepancy between two consecutive images. In the image processing, angular points of objects must correspond so that they deliver the size of objects. Thus, the robot passes through if the object has not the height, like the paper or the shadow projected. Otherwise, the robot passes aside if ...

  • This paper proposes a method of human- robot interaction (HRI) using face directional gesture. A single CCD color camera is used to input face region, and the robot recognizes the face directional gesture based on the facial feature´s positions. One can give a command such as stop, go, left and right turn to the robot using the face directional gesture. Since the robot also has the ultra sonic sensors, it can detect obstacles and determine a safe direction at the current position. By combining the user´s command with the sensed obstacle configuration, the robot selects the safe and efficient motion direction. From simulation results, we show that the robot with HRI is more reliable for the robot´s navigation.

  • Navigation in unknown environments, where the robot has no exact geometric information in advance, requires the robot to obtain the destination positions without a map. The utilization of model-based object recognition would be a solution, where the robot can estimate the destination positions from geometric relationships between the recognized objects and the robot. This paper presents a robot System for this kind of navigation, in Which the robot navigates itself to the room designated by room number. Object recognition technique is used to find a door and character recognition is utilized to interpret the room number on the number plate near the door and to determine whether it is the destination or not. The robot has ...

  • We need general developing environment to control robot with effect but less energy. So, software and hardware tools are very important. In this paper, we present a general-purpose robot control language and its implementation on Real Time O/S and VME bus system. The system runs on the VMEexec Real Time Operating System and robot program is written in the "C" language. The developed program is linked with the robot control C library io produce an executable image. Under the developed robot control environment, the user can write a general high-level control program leaving all the specific information about the robot in a robot specific file.ific file.

  • Recently, the robot has been used in industries and laboratories for the automation and the coarse and hazardous environments. In this paepr, it was studied the robot using DC servo motors. In that maner, Gold Star educational robot "Top-1" which was drived by 6-step motors was rebuilt to the robot. "Kon Kuk-I" using 6-servo motors. Because the caracteristics of step motors were not fit well the differential change. For the precise robot control, it was designed the controller which was adopted the velocity mode control and the position mode control. It was studied also the supporting software for the robot motion. As the results of this experiments, it was found that the robot "Kon Kuk-I" moved smoothly and accurately.

  • In the development of an underwater construction robot, the reliability of the operating system is the most important issue because of its huge maintenance cost, especially in a deep sea application. In this paper, we propose a new redundant architectural design for the hydraulic control system of an underwater construction robot. The proposed architecture consists of dual independent modular redundancy management systems linked with a commercial profibus network. A cold standby redundancy management system consisting of a preprocessing switch circuit is applied to the signal network, and a hot standby redundancy management system is adapted to utilize two main controllers.

  • When using robot manipulator to carry out autonomous tasks, the positioning accuracy of the robot manipulator relative to a reference coordinate frame is of greate importance. The task program, which is generated by off-line CAD-system and used in actual robot positioning, may cause serious amount of the absolute positioning error of the robot manipulator. In this study, a robot performance test and calibration algorithms are proposed in order to improve the absolute positioning accuracy of the robot end effector. Experiments were also carried out by utilizing the HYUNDAI Robot AE 7601 and KIM2-Tester, a three dimensional measurement system, which is developed in Robotics & Fluid Power Control Lab. at Korea Institute of Science and Technology.

  • This paper proposes a remote control system that combines computer network and an autonomous mobile robot. We control remotely an autonomous mobile robot with vision via the internet to guide it under unknown environments in the real time. The main feature of this system is that local operators need a World Wide Web browser and a computer connected to the internet communication network and so they can command the robot in a remote location through our Home Page. The hardware architecture of this system consists of an autonomous mobile robot, workstation, and local computers. The software architecture of this system includes the server part for communication between user and robot and the client part for the user interface and a robot control system. The server and client parts are developed using Java language which is suitable to internet application and supports multi-platform. Furthermore, this system offers an image compression method using motion JPEG concept which reduces large time delay that occurs in network during image transmission.
