  • Most path planning algorithms for a marine robot in the ocean environment have been developed without considering the robot's heading angle. As a result, the robot has a difficulty in following the path correctly. In this paper, we propose a limit-cycle circle set that applies to the $Theta^*$ algorithm. The minimum turning radius of a marine robot is calculated using a limit-cycle circle set, and circles of this radius is used to generate a configuration space of an occupancy grid map. After applying $Theta^*$ to this configuration space, the limit-cycle circle set is also applied to the start and end nodes to find the appropriate path with specified heading angles. The benefit of this algorithm is its fast computation time compared to other 3-D ($x,y,{\theta}$) path planning algorithms, along with the fact that it can be applied to the 3-D kinematic state of the robot. We simulate the proposed algorithm and compare it with 3-D $A^*$ and 3-D $A^*$ with post smoothing algorithms.

  • Robot software components can be categorized into two types; the pure S/W component and the H/W-related one. Since interface testing of the robot software component is the labour-intensive and complicated work, an effective automated testing tool is necessary. Especially it is difficult to test all types of H/W-related components because it is hard work to prepare all H/W modules related to them. This paper proposes a new simulation-based interface testing automation tool(SITAT) which generates automatically test cases for interface testing of the robot software component and executes the interface test with the generated test cases where the simulator is used for simulation of the activity of a H/W module instead of the real H/W module. This paper verifies the effectiveness of the suggested SITAT with testing of the real H/W-related robot software component.

  • In this paper, we research the localization problem of the crawler-type inspection robot for underwater structure which travels an outer wall of underwater structure. Since various factors of the underwater environment affect an encoder odometer, it is hard to localize robot itself using only on-board sensors. So in this research we used a depth sensor and an IMU to compensate odometer which has extreme error in the underwater environment through using Extended Kalman Filter(EKF) which is normally used in mobile robotics. To acquire valid measurements, we implemented precision sensor modeling after assuming specific situation that robot travels underwater structure. The depth sensor acquires a vertical position of robot and compensates one of the robot pose, and IMU is used to compensate a bearing. But horizontal position of robot can't be compensated by using only on-board sensors. So we proposed a localization algorithm which makes horizontal direction error bounded by using kinematics relationship. Also we implemented computer simulations and experiments in underwater environment to verify the algorithm performance.

  • The biped robot has the better mobility than the conventional wheeled robot. Since a biped robot tends to tip over easily, it is necessary to take stability into account when determining a walking pattern. To ensure the dynamic stability of the biped robot, we have to adapt the ground conditions with a foot motion and maintain motion, and ensure its stability through the kinematics and dynamics analysis. But its mathematic model is not too easy. In this paper, in order to ensure the dynamic stability of a biped robot, we design the fuzzy model and confirm the realization possibility of the proposed method through some simulations.

  • This study presents the remote control of a mobile robot using iPhone based on ad hoc communication. Two control interfaces are proposed to control a mobile robot using iPhone : Remote control by a user and autonomous control. To evaluate the effectiveness of algorithms for trajectory following, a simulator are developed where a virtual robot follows a referenced trajectory in a monitor by iPhone interface. In the proposed simulator, some algorithms are tested how they work well or not for trajectory following of a mobile robot. Comparative results by remote user control and autonomous control are shown. Results of an experiment show that the proposed simulator can be effectively used for testing the effectiveness of autonomous tracking algorithms.

  • It is essential for robot to have the sensing and communication abilities in the swarm robot system. In general, as the number of robot goes on increasing, the limitation of communication capacity and information overflow occur in global communication system. Therefore a local communication is more effective than global one. In this paper, we propose the novel method for determining the optimal communication radius through the analyzing of the information propagation based on local communication. And we also propose a method of cooperative strategies and group behavior of swarm robot based on artificial immune system.

  • It is essential for robot to have the sensing and communication abilities in the swarm robot system. In general, as the number of robot goes on increasing, the limitation of communication capacity and information overflow occur in global communication system. Therefore a local communication is more effective than global one. In this paper, we analyze information propagation mechanism based on local communication. To find an optimal communication radius, we propose several methods with different conditions. Also, to avoid chaotic behavior which occurs when a robot obtains and loses information, we will suggest the stable condition of information propagation.

  • The research and development for autonomous mobile robots has widely been reported. This paper describes a fuzzy logic based visual servoing system for an autonomous mobile robot. An existing system always needs to keep a moving object in overall image. This makes difficult to move the autonomous mobile robot spontaneously. In this paper we first explain an autonomous mobile robot and fuzzy logic system. And then we design a fuzzy logic based visual servoing system. We extract some features of the object from an overall image and then design a fuzzy logic system for controlling the visual servoing system to an exact position. We here introduce a shooting robot that can track an object and hit it. We show that the proposed system presents a desirable performance by a computer simulation and some experiments.

  • There are many types of reduction drives for industrial applications. In general, high precision speed reducer which has a cycloid or involute teeth profile, used to in robot. Because, it is essential to use precision reduction drives for accuracy of position control on robot system. In this paper, we propose a robot speed reducer(RSR) with straight line teeth profile, which has basically a triangle teeth profile. In new straight line teeth profile, we have a good result for strength, stress and stiffness by using finite element analysis and the results indicate that variation of eccentric coefficient affects the optimal tooth motion, and it can lower the stress and noise.

  • In this paper, we present the development of P-SURO II hybrid AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) which can be operated in both of AUV and ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) modes. In its AUV mode, the vehicle is supposed to carry out some of underwater missions which are difficult to be achieved in ROV mode due to the tether cable. To accomplish its missions such as inspection and maintenance of complex underwater structures in AUV mode, the vehicle is required to have high level of autonomy including environmental recognition, obstacle avoidance, autonomous navigation, and so on. In addition to its systematic development issues, some of algorithmic issues are also discussed in this paper. Various experimental studies are also presented to demonstrate these developed autonomy algorithms.
