The position of autonomous driving vehicle is basically acquired through the global positioning system (GPS). However, GPS signals cannot be received in tunnels. Due to this limitation, localization of autonomous driving vehicles can be made through sensors mounted on them. In particular, a 3D Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) system is used for longitudinal position error correction. Few feature points and structures that can be used for localization of vehicles are available in tunnels. Since lanes in the road are normally marked by solid line, it cannot be used to recognize a longitudinal position. In addition, only a small number of structures that are separated from the tunnel walls such as sign boards or jet fans are available. Thus, it is necessary to extract usable information from tunnels to recognize a longitudinal position. In this paper, fire hydrants and evacuation guide lights attached at both sides of tunnel walls were used to recognize a longitudinal position. These structures have highly distinctive reflectivity from the surrounding walls, which can be distinguished using LIDAR reflectivity data. Furthermore, reflectivity information of tunnel walls was fused with the road surface reflectivity map to generate a synthetic reflectivity map. When the synthetic reflectivity map was used, localization of vehicles was able through correlation matching with the local maps generated from the current LIDAR data. The experiments were conducted at an expressway including Maseong Tunnel (approximately 1.5 km long). The experiment results showed that the root mean square (RMS) position errors in lateral and longitudinal directions were 0.19 m and 0.35 m, respectively, exhibiting precise localization accuracy.

Active driving safety systems for vehicle, such as the front collision avoidance, lane departure warning, and lane change assistance, have been popular to be adopted to the compact car. For improving performance and competitive cost, FMCW radar has been researched to adopt a phased array or a multi-beam antenna, and to integrate the front and the side radar. In this paper we propose several efficient methods to implement the signal processing module of FMCW radar system using low cost DSP. The pulse width modulation (PWM) based analog conversion, the approximation of time-eating functions, and the adoption of vector-based computation, etc, are proposed and implemented. The implemented signal processing board shows the real-time performance of 1.4ms pulse repetition interval (PRI) with 1024pt-FFT. In real road we verify the radar performance under real-time constraints of 10Hz update time.

Furnishing traffic safety information can contribute to providing hazard warnings to drivers, thereby avoiding crashes. A smart road lighting platform that instantly recognizes road conditions using various sensors and provides appropriate traffic safety information has therefore been developed. This study analyzes the short-term traffic safety improvement effects of the smart road lighting's tunnel traffic safety information service using surrogate safety measures (SSM). Individual driving behavior was investigated by applying the vehicle trajectory data collected with RADAR in the Anin Avalanche 1 and 2 tunnel sections in Gangneung. Comparing accumulated speeding, speed variation, time-to-collision, and deceleration rate to avoid the crash before and after providing traffic safety information, all SSMs showed significant improvement, indicating that the tunnel traffic safety information service is beneficial in improving traffic safety. Analyzing potential crash risk in the subdivided tunnel and access road sections revealed that providing traffic safety information reduced the probability of traffic accidents in most segments. The results of this study will be valuable for analyzing the short-term quantitative effects of traffic safety information services.

The purpose of this paper is to develop a multi-sensor fusion-based traffic information acquisition system with robust to environmental changes. it combines the characteristics of each sensor and is more robust to the environmental changes than the video detector. Moreover, it is not affected by the time of day and night, and has less maintenance cost than the inductive-loop traffic detector. This is accomplished by synthesizing object tracking informations based on a radar, vehicle classification informations based on a video detector and reliable object detections of a infrared range finder. To prove the effectiveness of the proposed system, I conducted experiments for 6 hours over 5 days of the daytime and early evening on the pedestrian - accessible road. According to the experimental results, it has 88.7% classification accuracy and 95.5% vehicle detection rate. If the parameters of this system is optimized to adapt to the experimental environment changes, it is expected that it will contribute to the advancement of ITS.

Autonomous vehicles use various local sensors such as camera, radar, and lidar to perceive the surrounding environment. However, it is difficult to predict the movement of vulnerable road users using only local sensors that are subject to limits in cognitive range. This is true especially when these users are blocked from view by obstacles. Hence, this paper developed an algorithm for collision avoidance with VRU using V2X information. The main purpose of this collision avoidance system is to overcome the limitations of the local sensors. The algorithm first evaluates the risk of collision, based on the current driving condition and the V2X information of the VRU. Subsequently, the algorithm takes one of four evasive actions; steering, braking, steering after braking, and braking after steering. A simulation was performed under various conditions. The results of the simulation confirmed that the algorithm could significantly improve the performance of the collision avoidance system while securing vehicle stability during evasive maneuvers.
Various sensors such as lidar, radar, and camera are fused and used in autonomous vehicles. Rider and radar sensors are difficult to popularize because they are expensive equipment. In order to popularize autonomous vehicles, research that can replace expensive equipment is continuously being conducted. In this paper, we use a single camera that is inexpensive and can be easily mounted. We propose a method for detecting the wheels and adjacent lanes of a front-side vehicle of a driving vehicle and estimating distances. Our proposed method detects lanes and wheels from frame images after frame extraction via input images. In addition, the distance is measured and compared with the actual distance measured in the actual road environment. The distance could be calculated relatively accurately within the error range of ± 3 cm. Through this, it is expected that the camera can be used as an alternative means when the cost of autonomous vehicles is reduced or when the lidar or radar sensor fails.

In spite of the recent enforcement of policies to reduce traffic accidents, pedestrian safety accidents on the back road continue to occur. In this paper, we propose a device design to prevent traffic accidents capable of measuring distance and wireless communication to quickly notify pedestrians of the vehicle's approach in a safety blind spot. The accuracy of vehicle and pedestrian distance measurement was tested using ultrasonic and radar sensors with a wide sensing range, and the possibility of responding to accidents that could provide safety for pedestrians in emergency situations was verified through a wireless communication connectivity test between target boards.

Ensuring robust 3D object detection is a core challenge for autonomous driving systems operating in urban environments. To tackle this issue, various 3D representation, including point cloud, voxels, and pillars, have been widely adopted, making use of LiDAR, Camera, and Radar sensors. These representations improved 3D object detection performance, but real-world urban scenarios with unexpected situations can still lead to numerous false positives, posing a challenge for robust 3D models. This paper presents a post-processing algorithm that dynamically adjusts object detection thresholds based on the distance from the ego-vehicle. While conventional perception algorithms typically employ a single threshold in post-processing, 3D models perform well in detecting nearby objects but may exhibit suboptimal performance for distant ones. The proposed algorithm tackles this issue by employing adaptive thresholds based on the distance from the ego-vehicle, minimizing false negatives and reducing false positives in the 3D model. The results show performance enhancements in the 3D model across a range of scenarios, encompassing not only typical urban road conditions but also scenarios involving adverse weather conditions.

The advanced traffic management system of intelligent transport systems automates the related traffic tasks such as vehicle speed, traffic volume and traffic incidents through the improved infrastructures like high definition cameras, high-performance radar sensors. For the safety of road users, especially, the automated incident detection and secondary accident prevention system is required. Normally, CCTV based image object detection and radar based object detection is used in this system. In this paper, we proposed the algorithm for real time highway incident detection system using multi surveillance cameras to mosaic video and track accurately the moving object that taken from different angles by background modeling. We confirmed through experiments that the video detection can supplement the short-range shaded area and the long-range detection limit of radar. In addition, the video detection has better classification features in daytime detection excluding the bad weather condition.

An autonomous car(driverless car, self-driving car, robotic car) is a vehicle that is capable of sensing its environment and navigating without human input. Autonomous cars can detect surroundings using a variety of techniques such as radar, lidar, GPS, odometry, and computer vision. Advanced control systems interpret sensory information to identify appropriate navigation paths, as well as obstacles and relevant signage. Autonomous cars have control systems that are capable of analyzing sensory data to distinguish between different cars on the road, which is very useful in planning a path to the desired destination. An issue tree, also called a logic tree, is a graphical breakdown of a question that dissects it into its different components vertically and that progresses into details as it reads to the right.Issue trees are useful in problem solving to identify the root causes of a problem as well as to identify its potential solutions. They also provide a reference point to see how each piece fits into the whole picture of a problem. Using Issue-Tree menthods, transportation safety policies were developed with autonompus vehicle in mind.
