  • Traditionally, tire made a role of function, which is supporting vehicle load, making brake, transferring traction, etc. But tire is a part of vehicle design, nowadays. In accordance with this market trend, customers need a wide tread design tire (i.e. low series tire). Generally low Series Tire means stiffer than general tire. That brings out increasing road noise. (Especially tire cavity resonance noise) Tire noise is divided in structure home noise and air borne noise. Tire cavity resonance noise (structure home noise) come from vibration between tire and vehicle. In the study, we investigated that tire cavity resonance noise is affected by stiffness of tread and sidewall.

  • Vehicles and UGV(Unmanned Ground Vehicle) need a variety of road informations, such as road profile, soil type and soil water contents, to run a cross country course. Especially, soil water contents are very important factor to judge the vehicle mobility, because it can change soil strength. This paper describes the real-time measuring method of soil water contents by using the soil thermal conductivity.

  • This paper investigates the lighting environment of railway system which are mainly used in KTX, Saemaul and Mugunghwa. When lighting used in KTX such as fluorescent lamp and incandescence is being replaced with LED lamp, illumination load of each railroad vehicle has been compared. The comparison result shows that the reduction of power consumption is 43.34% before and after the change. Also it has been performed the economic evaluation.

  • When it is considered that many vehicle rides on the road and ride quality is an important method to evaluate vehicle performance with handling, running-over-bump manoeuvre may be suitable for testing ride quality. In this paper, a computed model has roughly steering system and lumped mass, connected by joint each rigid body, and suspension that has beam elements and has shock absorber as force element to represent nonlinear characteristics. A computer simulations for passing over a bump were made with two velocities. One side of vehicle passed over bump in due consideration of driver's habit that driver is subject to avoid a bad ride quality. On simulation, vertical acceleration, pitch angle and roll angle were measured at the mass center of chassis each case.

  • A mathematical model was developed to investigate the mechanical interrelation between soil characteristics and main design factors of a tracked vehicles , and predict the tractive performance of the tracked vehicles. Based on the mathematical model, a computer simulation program(TPPMTV98) was developed in this study. The effectiveness of the developed model was verified by comparing the predicted drawbar pulls using TPPMTV98 with measured ones from traction tests with a tracked vehicle reconstructed for test in loam soil with moisture content of 18.92%(d.b). The drawbar pulls measured by the TPPMTV98 were well matched to the measured ones. Such results implied that the model developed in this study could estimate the drawbar pulls well at various soil conditions , and would be very useful as a simulation tool for designing a tracked vehicle and predicting its tractive performance.

  • This paper presents sensor network based autonomous vehicle system using a proposed image processing algorithm. The proposed image processing algorithm consists of pre-processing and five-stage image processing: coordinate calculation, driving area decision, line segment calculation, steeling decision, and acceleration decision. We evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm on both straight road and curved road. Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm works well for autonomous vehicles. However, control accuracy of the proposed algorithm decreases as speed is increasing.

  • An Anti-lock Brake System ABS is developed to increase the stability of vehicle and to reduce the stopping distance when braking manoeuvres by measuring the wheel and vehicle speed. An ABS mathematical model which describes the dynamics of vehicle and calculate the stopping distance, is explained in this paper. To proceed this study, a mathematical model is produced with simulink software package. Although the model considered here is relatively simple, it retains the essential dynamics of the system.   • The drivers of commercial vehicle easily feel tired because of a long time driving and bad road condition. Therefore it is very important to make the driver seat comfortable. This paper introduces the suspension system of driver's seat using magnetic force. The combination of linear spring and magnetic force can make nonlinear spring which has optimal stiffness for minimal vibration transmissibility. The vibrations of driver's seat floor are measured in various road condition. And the numerical simulations and experiments are performed to define the optimal parameter of magnetic suspension system.

  • Durability performance evaluation of automotive components is very important and time consuming task. In this paper, to reduce vehicle component development time and cost virtual testing simulation technology is used to evaluate durability performance of a passenger car front aluminum sub-frame. Multibody dynamics based vehicle model and virtual test simulation model of a half car road simulator are validated by comparisons between rig test results and simulation results. Durability life prediction of the sub-frame is carried out using the model with road load data of proving ground which can evaluate accelerated durability life. We found that the durability performance of the sub-frame is sufficient and it can be predicted within short time compared to rig test time.

  • A vehicle oversteered or cornering at excessive speed leaves tire yaw mark on the road surface. A yaw mark is a sign that the tire was sideslipping and exceeded its frictional limit because of centrifugal force. Problems exist with the traditional equation, “critical speed formula (CSF)”, that limits its practical use in traffic accident reconstruction. A major problem is that the equation dose not account for vehicle dynamics and interface between tire and road. The literature refers to that the accuracy of the critical speed formula varies with several factors. New equations that account for vehicle dynamics are introduced in this paper. A comparison of the accuracy of the new method and the traditional method in the calculation of speed is conducted.
