When an off-road tracked vehicle travels, an engine thrust that is transmitted to the continuous track induces a shearing action on the soil-track interface. Consequently, the relative displacement known as slip displacement takes place on the soil-track interface, which develops an associated soil thrust acting as a traction force. For the loose or soft ground conditions, an excessively large slip displacement can be required for the development of the desired soil thrust which will make the tracked vehicle mobile and therefore the outer surface of the continuous track is generally designed to protrude with grousers. This paper fundamentally studied the effect of grousers on the soil thrust of off-road tracked vehicles. Based on the soil-track interaction theory, a new soil thrust assessment method that properly takes into account the effect of grousers was developed. Also, the soil thrust of off-road tracked vehicles equipped with a number of grousers was evaluated using the developed assessment method. The results showed that grousers increased the soil thrust of the continuous track, enhancing the overall tractive performance of off-road tracked vehicles. These effects were more obvious as the height of grouser increased and the spacing of grouser decreased; thus, it is concluded that the grouser which has smaller shape ratio (span of the grouser to a grouser height) significantly enhances off-road tracked vehicle's performance.

Impact based forecast refers to providing information on potential socioeconomic risks according to weather conditions, away from the existing weather factor-oriented forecast. Developed weather countries are investing manpower and finances in technology development to provide and spread impact information, but awareness of impact based forecasts has not spread in Korea. In addition, the focus is on disasters such as floods and typhoons, which cause a lot of damage to impact based forecasts, and research on evaluating the impact of vehicle risks due to strong winds in the transportation sector with relatively low damage is insufficient. In Korea, there are not many cases of damage to vehicle conduction caused by strong winds, but there are cases of damage and the need for research is increasing. Road vulnerability is required to evaluate the risk of vehicles caused by strong winds, and the purpose of this study was to calculate the criteria for road vulnerability. The road vulnerability evaluation was evaluated by the altitude of the road, the number of lanes, the type of road. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the vulnerable area was well reproduced. It is judged that the results of this study can be used as a criterion for preparing an objective evaluation of potential risks for vehicle drivers.
The SMART Highway project combines road construction with advanced technology and vehicle telecommunications. Its expected outcome is a world-leading intelligent road that is green, fast, and comfortable. A vehicular ad-hoc network(VANET) is the core technology of the SMART Highway, whose transport operation is based on road vehicles. The VANET is a next-generation networking technology that enables wireless communication between vehicles or between vehicles and a road side unit(RSU). In the VANET system, a vehicle accident is likely to cause a serious disaster. Therefore, some information on safety is essential to serve as the key exchange protocol for communication between vehicles. However, the key exchange scheme of the general network proposed for a fast-moving communication environment is unsuitable for vehicles. In this paper, communication between multiple vehicles more efficient and secure key exchange at the vehicle certification by signcryption is proposed.

A large fraction of urban $PM_{10}$ concentrations is due to non-exhaust traffic emissions including road dust, tire wear particles, and brake lining particles. Although potential health and environmental impacts associated with tire wear debris have been increased, few environmentally and biologically relevant studies of actual tire wear debris have been conducted. Tire wear particles (TWP) are released from the tire tread as a result of the interaction between the tire and the pavement. Roadway particles (RP), meanwhile, are particles on roads composed of a mixture of elements from tires, pavements, fuels, brakes, and environmental dust. The main objective of present study is to identify the contribution of tires to the generation of RP and to assess the potential environmental and health impacts of this contribution. First, a mobile measurement system was constructed and used to measure the roadway particles on asphalt road according to vehicle speed. The equipment of the mobile system provides $PM_{10}$ concentrations by Dusttrak DRX and number density & size distribution measurements of fine and ultra-fine particles by a fast mobility particle sizer (FMPS) and an aerosol particle sizer (APS). When traveling on an asphalt road at constant speed, there is a clear tendency for PM10 concentration to increase slightly in accordance with an increase in the vehicle speed. It was also found that considerable brake wear particles and particles from tire/road interface were generated by rapid deceleration of the vehicle. The morphology and elements of the roadway particles were also analyzed using SEM-EDX technique.

After the Rio declaration on environment and development in 1992, developed countries are undertaking 'environmentally sustainable transportation (EST)' projects. To meet the needs for EST, current transportation policies in Korea are rapidly reforming and one of its concerns is modernizing and upgrading railway freight system. Planning new railroad construction projects is increasing and subsequent environmental impact assessment (EIA) demands improvements, especially in both the EIA and decision making systems. In this paper, we discuss the present status of EIA for railroad construction projects, especially, by analyzing the EIA documents accumulated for last six years. The EIA for railroad construction projects .accounts for only $4.9\%$ of total project EIAs during 1998-2003. However, the portion is gradually increasing. Major environmental concerns for EIA in railroad construction projects were geomorphological and ecological changes, protection of rare organisms, air pollution, water quality, wast management, noise, etc. We also compared the characteristics of environmental impacts of railroad construction with those of vehicle road construction. The result shows that railroad construction usually requires 3${\~}$4 times longer tunnels and bridges for a given length than vehicle road construction. In addition, the amounts of geomorphological and ecological changes (road-cutting, embankment, devegetation, etc.) in railroad construction were generally less than $40\%$ of those in vehicle road construction. In order to develop environmentally friendly railway systems, monitoring studies for environmental impacts of railroads such as habitat fragmentation and road kills, dispersal of alien plants, tunnelling effects on groundwater and vegetation, and noise impacts are highly required.

3D positional information of lane can be automatically calculated tv combining GPS data, IMU data if coordinates of lane centers are given. The Road Safety Survey and Analysis Vehicle(RoSSAV) is currently under development to analyze three dimensional safety and stability of roads. RoSSAV has GPS and IMU sensors to get positional information of the vehicle and two road-facing CCD cameras for extraction of lane coordinates. In this paper, we develop technology that automatically detects centers of lanes from the road-facing cameras of RoSSAV. The proposed algorithm defines line-support regions by grouping pixels with similar edge orientation and magnitude together and extracts a line from each line support region by planar fitting. Then if extracted lines and the region in-between satisfy the criteria of brightness and width, we decide this region as lane. The proposed algorithm was more precise and stable than the previously proposed algorithm based on brightness threshold method. Experiments with real road scenes confirmed that lane was effectively extracted by the proposed algorithm.
According as vehicles increases, system such as Advanced Drivers Assistance System(ADAS ) to inform forward situation to driver is required. In this paper, we proposes method to detect forward vehicles and lane from sequential color images by basis process to inform forward situation to driver. We detect a front vehicle using that shadow area exists on part under vehicles and that road area occupies many parts even if road traffic is confused. We detect lane information using that lane part is white order by reverse characteristic of shadow area. This method shows good result in case road is confused or there is direction indication to road. HSV color space is selected for color modeling. This method uses saturation component and value component in HSV color model to detect vehicles and lane. It uses statistics features of HSV component and position to know whether detected vehicles area is vehicles such as vehicles previous frame. To verify the effects of the proposed method, we capture the road images with notebook and CCD camera for PC and Present the results such as processing time, accuracy and vehicles detection against the images.

Most of livestock houses are concentrated in certain area with mass rearing system resulting in rapid spread of infectious diseases such as HPAI (highly pathogenic avian influenza). The livestock-related vehicles which frequently travel between farms could be a major factor for disease spread by means of transmission of airborne aerosol including pathogens. This study was focused on the quantitative measurement of aerosol concentration by field experiment while vehicles were passing through the road. The TSP (total suspended particle) and PM10 (particle matter) were measured using air sampler with teflon filter installed downward the road with consideration of weather forecast and the direction of road. And aerosol spectrometer and video recorders were also used to measure the real-time distribution of aerosol concentration by its size. The results showed that PM2.5 was not considerable for transmission of airborne aerosol from the livestock-related vehicle. The mass generated from the road during the vehicle movement was measured and calculated to 241.4 ${\mu}g/m^3$ by means of the difference between TSP and PM2.5. The dispersion distance was predicted by 79.6 m from the trend curve.

This study investigated the structure of an 8-pole 8-slot linear generator, which acts as an electromagnetic damper by combining the structure of an electromagnetic suspension device capable of generating electrical energy through energy harvesting by absorbing the vibration energy from the road surface while driving. To compare the energy harvesting effect of the electromagnetic suspension according to the actual road surface, a driving road test was simulated for two actual road conditions, an asphalt road surface and unpacked road surface condition, using a civilian combined vehicle model in conjunction with a vehicle simulation program, Carsim and Simulink. As a result, the relative displacements of the suspensions on the asphalt road surface and the unpaved road were 8 mm and 13 mm, respectively. By applying the suspension displacement value derived by modeling the linear generator coupled to the electromagnetic suspension, the simulation was then performed for an analysis time of 0.3s by applying the same analytical conditions using the commercial electromagnetic analysis program, ANSYS MAXWELL, The average power generation on the unpacked roads and asphalt roads was 198.6W and 98.7W respectively, which was 103.7% higher for unpackaged roads. Finally, to compare the sensitivity of the road surface frequency and the suspension input displacement to the power generation output, the sensitivity of the two variables was 1.725 and 1.283, respectively, and the road surface frequency had a 34.5% higher effect on the average power generation.
