  • A method of the region extraction and recognition of a traffic light and speed sign board in the real road environment is proposed. Traffic light was recognized by using brightness and color information based on HSI color model. Speed sign board was extracted by measuring red intensity from the HSI color information We improve the recognition rate by performing an incline compensation of the speed sign for directions clockwise and counterclockwise. The proposed algorithm shows a robust recognition rate in the image sequence which includes traffic light and speed sign board.

  • Because there are some mistakes by hand in processing electronic maps using a navigation terminal, this paper proposes an automatic offline recognition for traffic signs, which are considered ingredient navigation information. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), which have been used widely in the field of 2D face recognition as computer vision and pattern recognition applications, was used to recognize traffic signs. First, using PCA, a high-dimensional 2D image data was projected to a low-dimensional feature vector. The LDA maximized the between scatter matrix and minimized the within scatter matrix using the low-dimensional feature vector obtained from PCA. The extracted traffic signs under a real-world road environment were recognized successfully with a 92.3% recognition rate using the 40 feature vectors created by the proposed algorithm.

  • Object detection plays a crucial role in a self-driving system. With the advances of image recognition based on deep convolutional neural networks, researches on object detection have been actively explored. In this paper, we proposed a lightweight model of the mask R-CNN, which has been most widely used for object detection, to efficiently predict location and shape of various objects on the road environment. Furthermore, feature maps are adaptively re-calibrated to improve the detection performance by applying an attention module to the neural network layer that plays different roles within the mask R-CNN. Various experimental results for real driving scenes demonstrate that the proposed method is able to maintain the high detection performance with significantly reduced network parameters.

  • It's proposed and analyzed ML(Machine Learning) models to predict vehicle FC(Fuel Consumption) in real-time. The test driving was done for a car to measure vehicle speed, acceleration, road gradient and FC for training dataset. The various ML models were trained with feature data of speed, acceleration and road-gradient for target FC. There are two kind of ML models and one is regression type of linear regression and k-nearest neighbors regression and the other is classification type of k-nearest neighbors classifier, logistic regression, decision tree, random forest and gradient boosting in the study. The prediction accuracy is low in range of 0.5 ~ 0.6 for real-time FC and the classification type is more accurate than the regression ones. The prediction error for total FC has very low value of about 0.2 ~ 2.0% and regression models are more accurate than classification ones. It's for the coefficient of determination (R2) of accuracy score distributing predicted values along mean of targets as the coefficient decreases. Therefore regression models are good for total FC and classification ones are proper for real-time FC prediction.

  • In intelligent transportation systems, traffic management is an important task. The accurate forecasting of traffic characteristics like flow, congestion, and density is still active research because of the non-linear nature and uncertainty of the spatiotemporal data. Inclement weather, such as rain and snow, and other special events such as holidays, accidents, and road closures have a significant impact on driving and the average speed of vehicles on the road, which lowers traffic capacity and causes congestion in a widespread manner. This work designs a model for multivariate short-term traffic congestion prediction using SLSTM_AE-BiLSTM. The proposed design consists of a Bidirectional Long Short Term Memory(BiLSTM) network to predict traffic flow value and a Convolutional Neural network (CNN) model for detecting the congestion status. This model uses spatial static temporal dynamic data. The stacked Long Short Term Memory Autoencoder (SLSTM AE) is used to encode the weather features into a reduced and more informative feature space. BiLSTM model is used to capture the features from the past and present traffic data simultaneously and also to identify the long-term dependencies. It uses the traffic data and encoded weather data to perform the traffic flow prediction. The CNN model is used to predict the recurring congestion status based on the predicted traffic flow value at a particular urban traffic network. In this work, a publicly available Caltrans PEMS dataset with traffic parameters is used. The proposed model generates the congestion prediction with an accuracy rate of 92.74% which is slightly better when compared with other deep learning models for congestion prediction.

  • In this paper, we propose an region segmentation and texture based feature extraction method which split the pavement and roadway from the camera which equipped to the visually impaired person during a walk. We perform the hough transformation method for detect the boundary between pavement and roadway, and devide the segmented region into 3-level according to perspective. Next step, split into pavement and roadway according to the extracted texture feature of segmented regions. Our walking assistance system use rotation-invariant LBP and GLCM texture features for compare the characteristic of pavement block with various pattern and uniformity roadway. Our proposed method show that can segment two regions with illumination invariant in day and night image, and split there regions rotation and occlution invariant in complexed outdoor image.

  • Due to harsh conditions of construction site, understanding of current feature of terrain and other infrastructures is critical issue for site managers. However, because of difficulties in acquiring the geographical information of the construction sites such as large sites and limited capability of construction workers, comprehensive site investigation of current feature of construction site is not an easy task for construction managers. To address these circumstances of construction sites, this study deduce difficulties and applicabilities of unmanned aerial vehicle in the area of construction site management. To confirm applicability of UAV in civil construction project, case study have been conducted on the road construction project. The result of case study proved that the developed system is one of promising technologies that has been studied in construction site management. To improve applicability of UAV for construction and process management information, law and technical issues will be an important area of future study.

  • This paper presents a robust algorithm for segmenting a vehicle license plate area from a road image. We consider the features of license plates in three aspects : 1) edges due to the characters in the plate, 2) colors in the plate, and 3) geometric properties of the plate. In the preprocessing step, we compute the thresholds based on each feature to decide whether a pixel is inside a plate or not. A statistical approach is applied to the sample images to compute the thresholds. For a given road image, our algorithm binarizes it by using the thresholds. Then, we select three candidate regions to be a plate by searching the binary image with a moving window. The plate area is selected among the candidates with simple heuristics. This algorithm robustly detects the plate against the transformation or the difference of color intensity of the plate in the input image. Moreover, the preprocessing step requires only a small number of sample images for the statistical processing. The experimental results show that the algorithm has 97.8% of successful segmentation of the plate from 228 input images. Our prototype implementation shows average processing time of 0.676 seconds per image for a set of $1280{\times}960$ images, executed on a 3GHz Pentium4 PC with 512M byte memory.

  • Traffic speed is an important measure in transportation. It can be employed for various purposes, including traffic congestion detection, travel time estimation, and road design. Consequently, accurate speed prediction is essential in the development of intelligent transportation systems. In this paper, we present an analysis and speed prediction of a certain road section in Busan, South Korea. In previous works, only historical data of the target link are used for prediction. Here, we extract features from real traffic data by considering the neighboring links. After obtaining the candidate features, linear regression, model tree, and k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) are employed for both feature selection and speed prediction. The experiment results show that k-NN outperforms model tree and linear regression for the given dataset. Compared to the other predictors, k-NN significantly reduces the error measures that we use, including mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and root mean square error (RMSE).
